SV650 and MT07 are both budget bikes, they are great as a daily commuter and having some fun on the twisty during the weekends. I wouldn't take them to circuit because of the sub-par suspension and brakes.

Andreani has fully adjustable fork cartridges for the FZ/MT, and swapping the rear for a ZX-6RR shock solves the other piece. After that, the engine can use an intake cam, a small bump in compression, a little head porting, and ECU flash to make around 90 hp. It would be very hard to beat. ER-6F 649cc twin is being used in Isle of Man TT and AMA flattrack racing with success. It's been tuned near 100 hp and seems to be lasting well enough. Yamaha has another 40cc over it.

I ride a 2000 SV650S daily with almost 70000 km on the clock on freeways, clocking 100 km daily, must say despite the lack of top end performance the maouverability through traffic allows me to outmanouvre most bikes on the market of all types and sizes. The V twin is just that good! The aluminum chassis outstanding, and the free flow exhaust provides me with all the verility I could ask for.

The SV650 is easy to overlook, basically coz of it’s dated design. But boy how it grows on you by the day. It’s actually a steal if you think about it. Quality/reliability is a given but its performance is pure unadulterated rider and bike combination that takes you back to how raw riding really is.

Forget the bike reviews, the renewal quote and service I was offered by Bennetts this year was appalling and an absolute disgrace. I was offered better cover at less than half the price, so I’ve moved on. The rep on the phone was not interested at all. So after being on two wheels for over 45 years, my tip for fellow bikers is don’t use Bennetts!

I was doing my bike test after some travel and buying my first property so I was looking for a used Kawasaki er6 and come across on a WK 650 on an online auction. I did a little research and stuck in a cheeky/low bid as it was a nearly new bike at the time and had done sub 800 miles. To my surprise I won the auction and was the now worried owner of a Chinese built copy of a Kawasaki what had I done! That was two years ago now and I can say I'm very happy with how the bike has served me. I'm a new rider so had the bike checked over and with a clean bill of health and now 4000 miles later on the bike it's lasted rather well, it is definitely not the best quality ie paint finish and switch gear do feel cheap but it has never let me down mechanical or had any major electrical faults. I would never have paid the new price for the wk 650, I would have just bought a more used er6 but for what I paid for the wk and with no problems experienced I feel I had a bit of a result. It definitely looks better in the flesh/metal. I was worried when I won this bike but with proper maintenance it seems to have been a good starter for me.

I'd say out of all of these the SV and MT/FZ have the most potential. Getting rid of the cheap nasty suspensions on both of these machines, they'd be easily capable of being use for racing platforms. If Yamaha modified the CP2 engine to make it eligible for the lightweight twins class, I think it would be a hit. Independent clubs have already made an FZ-07R version of the bike, making over 90 hp with small modifications. It's very light to start with and makes a solid 50 ft-lb torque, more than the others.

My wife has owned the MT for about 18 months and agree the suspension is bit lacking, but for 5k I feel it's the best middle weight out there, as engine, looks and comfort are all amazing. The suspension can be easily sorted which for about £300, making still a very cost effective bike.

@@OAK_MTN they definitely offer more character but I can 100% assure you that the Kawasaki 650 twin is way more reliable than the SV650 take it from someone who spends time around motorcycle mechanics. V-Twins are one of the least reliable motorcycle engines out there eg Ducati's, Ktm's and Harleys. The Tl1000 engine from suzuki a V-Twin they developed a few years ago is a good example, they're honestly not reliable dude they vibrate themselves to death. The MT 07 definitely keeps working but I can't really give my opinion or experience because they seem to last but ppl also sell them before 20000 km.

  • @OAK_MTN

@@thepsychicpeach8425 Yeah I've heard about various issues on the 1000cc V-twins Suzuki put in the older SV1000 and TL1000. The 645cc one in the SV and V-Strom is well known to be bullet proof though. Many examples known to go for over 150000 km's with questionnable maintenance. I think we're going off topic though. As I see it, a 650 class motorcycle seems, to me, to be a strange relationship between impulsivity and reason. My question was more aimed at what kind of owner buys an ER-6N or a Z650? One who's after a nice chassis, purely aesthetics and feel or something else I'm missing out? I'd tend to think, and hope reliability is not the only thing buyers are thinking of.

I test rode the 650sv and the 2018 mt07. The sv wasn't as comfortable for me. The tank size was too much making me reach too far for the bars tiring me out quickly. The fz is a much smoother bike...and the engine is torque-y all the way through. Not a huge power band...it's a linear power curve Imo. Much more flickable, much more fun to ride, and just all around nice imo. I ended up.buying he 2018 between the two. I liked the sv, but it fell short in comparison to the mt07 for me

Of those the only one I've no experience of is the WK.. The MT07 build quality IMO is shit compared to the ER6n and SV. The SV650 feels dated. The ER6n is a wolf in sheeps clothing IMO and the best of the bunch by a long shot.. And no, I'm not an ER6n owner but if I was in that category (based on my own personal experience) my choice would be the ER6n.
