The adorable Suzuki Jimny enjoyed an all too-short life here in the UK, killed off prematurely by tightening emissions and safety regulations. But if you're after the cutest rough-and-tumble SUV around and don't need back seats, well you're in luck. That's because Suzuki's commercial version of the Jimny - which does without the same level of passenger car regulations - is still for sale in the UK, and might be even better than the fun-loving SUV....

I drive it on the highway at 120 km/h no problem, speaking with my passenger, no problem
Just fantastic . Back in the 80s we all pilled in my cousins SJ413 bought from Suzuki in bromley , took the roof off and disappeared into the Kent countryside . Still some of the best motoring memories i have .
Back pre-Jimny I had an old SJ413 for a while, loved the thing, just novelty motoring. I hadn't got into off roading back then, wish I had, but I loved that little beast, every road was exciting, you felt like you were hammering along risking everything- at 40 mph! Great fun. A friend of mine had an SJ411 soft top, he said he found that if he hit a pothole it felt like the thing was going to spin, because they were so short. I would love to have another but not as my only vehicle, great little run-about for local runs, playing in mud etc. and have a real car for longer distances!
I like the fact that at 8:47, from the external shot, you can see the car wobbling left and right ever so slightly. I presume that's when the reviewer was still yanking on the steering wheel and being amazed at how little was happening 😂

My heart was in my mouth watching her do that with the wheel.
My father had the SJ 410 (open/ soft top) back in the 80's. Had tons of fun driving it even though the ride was as stiff as you could possibly imagine.
Our son has one of these Suzuki Jimnys as you mentioned they do appreciate as soon ss drive them out if the show room and in Australia they come with a back seat because our emission laws aren't that sticked and they are one of the most desirable vehicles in Australia

same here in the UK mate, we are aslso paying 330 pounds road tax because its classed as a commercial vehicle.
I had its great grandfather in Dubai in the 80’s… Brilliant and drove one in Kenya… floats over mud unlike bigger 4x4. Nicholas’s reviews always the best! 😍
I absolutely LOVE mine ! I have the 2014 model. I've had many cars.....Mercedes B class and a brand new Audi C to name a couple. But my Jimny is far and away my favourite :)
We live in Oz and my wife has a glx with climate control, touch screen etc and she absolutely loves it coz “it’s cute” It will never see as much a dirt track but she loves it despite the interior finish reminding me of a 1977 for escort. 🤣🤣🤣. Happy wife happy life.
I've always liked the Jimny, and this one for me is the best. No tech, just drive it. A lot less to go wrong but as you mention it's a tad agricultural on the road. I still can't justify one but that does not stop me wanting one. Oh, and it'll even fit in a parking space after you pay for the privilege of entering a city's low emissions zone. I'm not sure the load area would look or smell great if you went off road with the dogs in the back though for long. A great fun review Nicola!
I’ve got a 2001 jimny and you can’t get anything as simple as mine, it’s totally different to my GR Yaris with all the bells and whistles, , the jimny puts a massive smile on my face every time I drive it, saying that so does the GR but in a totally different way
@bigduphusaj162

valve guides on GR Yaris are suspect AF sell it when warranty is up.
I find it funny that stricter emissions norms are applied only to private vehicle whereas, commercial vehicle has no such strict emissions norms. Where as in reality commercial vehicles can easily reach 100,000 km mark within an year.
Great review! Getting my new Jimny next week FINALLY after waiting for 10 months! The vague steering is not a problem for me as long as it does go straight. Very curious about this since i could only test it at very low speed.
Absolutely it should just have wind up handles. So simple and so reliable! As a dedicated adventure motorcycle rider, the Jimny looks like luxury to me!
When these came out in Australia in 2019(?), they were just under $25k d/a. But you had to wait 6 months. Knowing this, people ordered 2, kept one and sold one as soon as it landed for $35k. Now they’re just under $30k d/a, but long wait. I have recently seen them advertised for up to $47k second hand! To put it in perspective, in 2013, I bought a brand new Grand Vitara 2.4 petrol for $23,990 d/a with, roof rack, tow bar, mudflaps, plastic spare wheel cover, embossed floor mats and roadside assist for three years. Never needed roadside assist and averaged low 7’s litres per 100km in comfort!
I knew someone who had the original little boxy Suzuki back in the mid '80s. Rough but cheap as chips and ppp perfect for round town. Low tech is Green tech.
A great review, especially for Suzuki fans like us in India where the Jimny has just been launched as a five-door small SUV. Thank you
I've had a SZ5 since 2019 & as a knock about car its ace, great in town for parking, no great on a motorway granted but drive it within its limits 65mph max its fine. The seats are good for 2 hours ish, we use it for airport runs without issue. I have 2 other cars & its the Jimmy we drive most often, I love it so much, & its still worth £5k more than I paid for it, RESULT.
Btw i think the Jimny is also good for on road driving, if: 1. you love the raw 1980s car character, 2. you either don't drive much or you have another normal car. For us its a second car and we plan to keep it for a long time. It doesn't have an expensive battery that ages quickly, repairs are quite simple to do yourself, and most importantly for me it can reverse my trailer uphill on my steep unpaved driveway thanks to low gear + 4x4
Infectious personanility, best car reviewer any day of the week as she just tells it, as it is whatever the car and price.

You're being sarcastic, yes?
I own a glx in Australia and it is the best car I've ever owned !! Its not that bad on road either !!
I got a commercial last year, grey, best car I ever had !
We Indians are lucky, we are getting a 5-door Jimny loaded with features like a 9-inch touch infotainment system with wireless Android and Apple CarPlay. Better insulation and an auto gearbox. I've booked one for myself.

So how much is this version and where can you get it?
Even as a van it's so cool
you can't buy a new jimmy commercial in the uk..dealers have pre registered them and again charging 24k to 29k suzuki need to set this out sharp

Agreed. Same thing happened to me when they were first released. Dealer behaviour was shameful. I asked for my deposit back and walked away.
A shame it wasn't around in my days as a car valeter/ detailer. Would have been perfect for me.
Vague steering? I don't know what you mean. I have one. It's not a Lotus but the steering is just fine for a car on four narrow and smallish wheels. And I enjoy driving it on roads b/c there are no off-road opportunities in this country, just a lot of bad and rutted roads. Most fun car I have ever had.
Nicola, interesting noises throughout the commentary. Well done!
Here is SW France some remove the steel internal grill to good effect. Headlight grills are a great accessory too
Where did they take it off roading? .. I want to take my jimny 😁
I'd buy this tomorrow if they did it wish the 1.4 from the swift sport
Having just done a speed awareness course ,I've been told that vans are limited to 50 mph on anything except a motorway , so if this is considered to be a van rather than a car based van , just saying , anyone know different
Ha! Brilliant review! Love Nicola and the Jimny! ❤☺️👍
Yes, that is clearly the best designed dog walkies wagon I have ever seen. It is the most perfectly optimised design for transporting doggos to the middle of nowhere so they can sniff the best smells. (And eat things you wish they wouldn't.)
Perfect for navigating potholes
I just got the new 5 door 2024 Jimny XL. Only had it a week today and love it. I am not sure how they got around emissions regulations with the new XL model. The vehicle still has the same 1.5 litre engine. In Australia there can be a 12 to 18 month wait, owing to demans for this vehicle. Suzuki makes the new XL in Japan and sends them as a kit to be assembled in India. The 3 door Jimny is still made and assembled in Japan. I paid 40k AUD they are not so cheap anymore.
I’ve had my SZ5 since new and over three years and 27k miles and it’s perfect for fishing as I drive down farmers fields and my muddy tracks regularly. Would I pay 24k for one, errr nope 😊 plenty of character though not many cars these days give you that.
Does it work on the road? Yes, I loaded all the gear we needed for my daughter's wedding and drove down to Portimao! Then we drove through stuff normal cars can't manage. And delivered the bride to the wedding!!! I've driven everything (yes, Inc Porsche, McLaren, Lamborghini etc.) And this is the most characterful car ever. I'll keep this till I die. And my CRX for its 9000rpm soundtrack.. Until you drive one you won't get it.. it's brilliant.
They would probably seal really good now at the gas prices now. I have a grand vitara I get 28mpg & it's 22 years old & runs great!
I thought to be a commercial in the uk it can’t have windows in the back?
The wobbling of the steering wheel had me properly laughing. Nothing was happening 😂

its because there is no anti roll bar. it does move the wheels just not in the side to side direction as much as it would with a roll bar fitted. If youve seen the new Land Cruiser 250s electronicaly disconnectable anti roll bar youd see that when the roll bar is disconnected the steering practically does nothing on any wheel thats at full articulation compared to the wheel on the ground. There is no other steering tricks going on just the roll bar disconnect and youd be shocked at what difference it makes on the steering
Please give the Jimney a torquey 2.0 litre engine, a choice of 5 speed manual or six speed automatic and a 15 cm longer wheelbase.
Love it. They really are a great little machine. Citroen and Suzuki should make cars together. Citroen might teach Suzuki how to make the Jimmy quieter like they did with there square concept thingy.
its the only reason it put me off buying one the price the room for my 6ft3 hight as front seat movement restriction its a shame really as i was all set on getting one but ended up going for the new dacia duster extreme and safe my self a load of cash
Nicolas reviews are always great but it was cool to see her in all action mode having a great time.
I have an older (09) Jimny, Love it so I only enjoyed this report about its new little Sister, up to about 7minutes. My 1300cc machine doesn't like travelling too fast (over 60mph), even on a tarmaced surface ! Who needs to hear your passenger telling you how to drive anyway. My co-pilot/navigator is usually my very well manered staffy, who doesn't like to talk too much, and enjoys the sedate drive !
Really want to see the outtakes on this one😂 Had the Susuki SJ410 back in the day. Most fun worst car I've ever owned.
Some private jet flying Brusselcrat killed this quirky cutie because emmissions.
I was on all the South East Suzuki dealers waiting list for a couple of years having seen the car in mag features prior. Just two days before covid lockdown collected from the Southampton dealership. No massive mark up, just the RRP. The basic steel wheels no gizmos so like the commercial. Have been round M25 many times and as motorway is slow Jimny is no problem. I really don't want hitech, life is complicated enough. PS the rear seats in the first version would only be good for children. It is a keeper.
Very entertaining. Girls at play? You clearly had one heck of a time. The car/commercial vehicle? I think it will find it's own market, local runabout with plenty of off road country work. It brought the kid out in you which puts it in the class of fun car with great practicality if you don't want to go far or go fast!
3:18 "I'll have what she's having" :)
This is so good real off road small suv and probably the only one in existence. Toyota has Yaris cross that looks as off roady but it’s just a look and inferior awd, which is worse than a fwd version in similar road conditions like on the video. Suzuki wins
So as its sold now as a commercial vehicle, its speed limit is restricted to commercial vehicle speed limits, 50mph single carriageways, 60 mph on dual carriageways and 70 mph on motorways.
It's a proper vehicle, less to go wrong, the only thing that I don't like is the back windows. I like the old styling, it's like driving an old Land Rover, you've got to drive it, get involved in driving, most vehicles today are boring, overly technical, you could be driving a ford fiesta or a Bentley to,. Apart from looks (and price) they all drive the same........ boring, what's wrong with a bit of noise? I'd buy one, but I bet they're expensive
If you run a small business that must be VAT registered, the VAT 20% is reclaimable of course, which makes it a sweeter deal
Should have put a 2 ltr vnt diesel and 180bhp plus and two fingers upto environmental lot
I’m really struggling with the fact you keep a big bunch of keys clanging around! 😂
I have a Fiat Panda 4x4 and it has a similar following. Motoring with a smile 🙂

It's not, you can get Jimny with 5 doors in Europe now
The vague steering was funny, you do that on a Suzuki swift in that speed, it probably will end up getting a 360 spin.
I drive a JB64 in Japan. Its awesome!
I have the Gypsy. the Sj413. long wheel base called MG413 in India. this is the grand father of this Jimny. Absolutely stock bare bones soft top vehicle. no ac and power steering and all these electronic aids. there is NOTHING quite like it.
I got the Indian version (5 doors) same color 2023 model. It is great to take more friends to chat with the power go go anywhere is a nice feeling. I like the size of the vehicle ( which is small) with not even a decent phone holder or place to keep. It has no room for even a single bottle. Saying that i love it as it is one of the most practical vehicle so far for me. By the way i hate that lump infotainment 10.3 inches at the front which is not practicable at all. Edit:10.3 inches
haha that steering box review
The amount of monkey/ape impressions Nicola provided throughout was worth the watch on there own 😂. You really are, without any shadow of a doubt, the best vehicle reviewer I've ever seen, great work as always.
My wife has one. It's great off road. Just don't overload it, don't put anything on the roof, don't exceed 95kmh. Be an experienced driver.
I was fortunate to get a 2019 steel wheel model. It is not exactly confortable, with no elbow room etc but that is besides the point. I learned to drive with a Reliant Regal Super Van so the Jimmy is luxury. It is not for sale.
01:48 in India this is just a regular road
They stopped selling Suzuki cars in the US 10 years ago. Does Suzuki still sell cars in Great Britain?
What a great laugh that review was.
My the most loved car!
All on standard OEM tyres too - Bridgestone Dualers? We had those on our Jimny (02) from new, never got stuck, 60,000 miles out of them! Then 40,000 out of the equally as good Avon M&S road tyres. Those were the days. Such a brilliant little car, then and now, but £23,000 for nearly new van? £25,000 for a s/h car? Sorry too rich for my blood. Better with a 4grip Ignis for fun?
If only Suzuki made a Jimny hybrid. OMG!
Can still buy them in Indonesia new, with back seats, for £23k
This car is exactly what I want. 😢 Cars don't need tech. We all have smart phones.

My new 5 door Jimny Xl has a 9 inch smart screen as part of the dash that connects to your smartphone. As well as GPS maps, reversing camera and info on fuel economy info etc They are slightly more luxury now with some modern touches. Power windows nice freezing cold A/C. Hill decent modes for high and low range. But still the great old Jimny design and character.
of course you should buy one for everyday driving , on and off road. wear earmuffs if you're worried about a bit of noise , looks like the steering is a safety feature . jeez, get over it and just drive
OMFG I need this in my life 🖤
I wish we could buy these in the USA... closest thing we have is a 2 door Jeep Wrangler.
I'm on my third Fiat panda 4x4 . I'm going to change to a new Jimmy commercial next time.🙂 I have no complaints about the Panda as it's very capable and has lots of kit . But the Jimny excels and has desirability 🙂
It’s a shame they are so over price now for what you actually get. We still have the full model here…but for how long.
Stock tyres???
Those things cost $24000 usd in the Philippines new + a massive tax.
Do suzuki sell the seats for them though lol
NIcola, thank you for your reports. Your vivaciousness is only exceeded by your enthusiasm. You really need to get out and do some more off-road driving.
How is this new news?
This reviewer is so good. Very real, energetic and engaging.
Brilliant car and it's fast enough the legal limit in uk is 70mph max it'll cruise at 60 mph -70mph the legal limit on mways plus it's economic super reliable and not an oversized overweight suv it's also environment friendly unlike most cars that includes ev's
Trop mignon ce Jimny
absolutely appalled after speaking with a Suzuki dealer... enquired about one of these, and they explained that they 'have a list' which they send to Suzuki whereby they request a car. I thought great, works for me. So I asked the price and they told me they buy them pre-reg, cost to the public £26495!! I laughed, and told them its too much, to then be asked what did I want to pay?.... I said maybe the price that's advertised on the website? (£16,796 (exc VAT). Shocking behaviour.

I had a similar experience when these Commercial versions were released. I was first on the list with a deposit 6 months in advance at my local dealer (take a bow Howards of WSM - scumbags). When it arrived they refused to sell to me at Suzuki UK list price, with all sorts of BS excuses. They were registering them and selling them used for an £8K markup over list. I asked for my deposit to be returned, bought elsewhere, and since then have diverted every colleague, friend, and family member to purchase cars from more honest dealerships 😊

@@steffenchristmas1987 it was a different dealer for me, stoneacre, but obviously had the same playbook. Which dealer did you end up using and did you still buy a new jimny in the end?
@steffenchristmas1987
Жыл бұрын
@@octocon1379 The final day I was lied to and let down I phoned around other Suzuki dealers (and called Suzuki UK to discuss Howards behaviour). TBF I found the majority of dealers were selling in an ethical manner at the price advertised. However, my local, and many others were playing "games" with pricing. We didn't buy a Jimny in the end. Nothing was available at the time at list at the honest dealers, and the pre-reg cars were being sold at a silly premium. It ended up being a blessing in disguise as we searched further and purchased a nearly new Subaru Forester XT which has a permanent 4wd system, suits mixed road/light off road conditions better than the Jimny (Jimny has no centre diff so is 2wd in changeable tarmac rain/slush/snow/unpredictable conditions ), is very quick, comfortable and capacious and has been flawless. It suited my girlfriend's needs better. We use my Land Cruiser when the going gets rougher. Hope this helps. EDITED to say.... Credit where it's due: I travelled all over and took my time when searching for a Subaru Forester - I'm knowledgeable enough and handy with the tools to feel confident buying cars. Adams Brothers in Aylesbury were an outstanding Subaru dealer. Matthew Axford was totally straight up, honest, punctual, friendly and a pleasure to deal with. If you decide on a Subaru I'd have no hesitation in buying from him again.
That’s how Suzuki 4x4 are. Steering wheel has some play on it.
regulations are why we can't have nice things
it is soooo cute!!!

It's a cute wee thing but I'll stick with my 1999 Amazon. 👍🏴
Recirculating ball steering. Doesn't kick back and break your wrists off-road.
They do the 1.4 turbo in the Vitara, why not put that in the Jimny and its perfect
I had an LJ50 way back when (1970s?). To put it mildly, it didn't hold its value. I remember my serviceman saying, it needs $1,000 worth of repairs, and when you're done, the car will be worth $1,000! Not sure why I am still hankering after Suzukis, must be a slow learner.
What price is it ?
