Suzuki Ignis Hybrid 4x4 Allgrip 2020 - cheaper Jimny? (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Suzuki Ignis was given a mild facelift in 2020. Cosmetic changes include things like the new grill, and silver-painted elements at the bottom of the front and rear bumper, which may look like skid plates, but they are not.
The biggest changes are under the bonnet, where in order to curb emissions of the naturally aspirated 1.2 liter 4-cylinder Dualjet engine Suzuki added a mild hybrid. A very mild one at that , as it’s a 12V system versus the usual 48V installation. Even Suzuki Swift Sport gets a 48V mild hybrid, Mazda3 uses a 24V mild hybrid, but the Ignis only gets 12V. Apparently that's all it needs.
The integrated starter generator helps restart the engine, after it shuts off for example at the lights. The ISG also helps the engine, when the car starts moving, and under acceleration, using energy recuperated during coasting and braking.
↔ Suzuki Ignis Hybrid dimensions:
✔ length: 3700 mm
✔ width: 1690 mm
✔ height: 1605 mm
✔ wheelbase: 2435 mm
✔ boot/trunk: 204-267 L
💲 Suzuki Ignis Hybrid starting price: 15 000 euro

I have a Ignis manual transmission and two wheel drive and I must say I am very happy with it. With only 850 kg total weight and 90 horsepower it is very fun to drive. It reminds me of my first car, a Renault 4L. Very versatile (the sliding rear seats help a lot when carrying more stuff than usual in such a small car) and does what was designed to do very well. A no frills, cheerful and even lively car. And super simple, robust and reliable. I always like cars that are not bland and this one is definitely not, either you love it or hate it. I like cars that have a string visual design personality. And because of the low weight it is very easy do drive and to make trajectory changes in a relatively high speed/lot of curves context, which is a bit surprising given the height of the car. The fuel efficiency is amazing. If i stick to 100-120 km/h speed on a highway I easily get a 4.3 l/100km average, which is amazing and sometimes, being extra careful i reach 4.0-3.9! . I also think the official data is understating a bit the performance. I could swear i never need 11 full seconds to reach 100km/h. I have seen some youtube videos where guys do it in 10 s so my feeling is probably right.

For me this car is one of the last Samurais. It has the character of a mini MPV which I love. I need something small and practical. Load some people, dog, etc, go to the beach, to the mountain, get it dirty, with low running/maintenance cost and enjoy it. I hate SUVs and the new superminis are too slick for me liking. It's sad that the car industry is moving away from these cars (l really like the C3 Picasso) and go towards the SUVs

I tested one of these, exact same model and I liked the slightly heavier feel with the allgrip system, it pulled nicely enough and the engine sounded good for a 1.2. Anyone who wants a faster car, go buy a faster car then ! Too many people compare cars from different segments against each other and then complain one is slower. Baffling.

The wife has a Panda 4x4 which she has to change because of company car policy rules. Needs a car with a EuroENCAP rating of 4 up. She has decided against the Suzuki in favour of a captur . She would like 4wd but, has decided to work from home in bad weather instead. A Panda cross would still be her choice if it was allowed as a company car though. Cheers Marek, another good review.

Aargh, damn it! I just typed a long review of the Ignis Allgrip that I've owned for 4 months, and I scrolled down the comments to reference something that somebody had typed and when I scrolled back up, everything I had typed had disappeared. *!%#'ing KZread! I'm not going to type it all again, so I'll just say that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Ignis Allgrip. I'm getting between 58 and 60 miles per gallon from it, which is way better than my expectations and better than the official figures. I love its ride height, it's sci-fi moon buggy looks and clean Apple iPod vibe with its white body and black wheels. The Allgrip performed well in some heavy hail over the winter, and I had a little play around when nobody else was on the road, and I felt very safe behind the wheel. I know the viscous coupled Allgrip Auto is basic in 4WD terms, but any vehicle that drives the rear wheels when the front ones spin is going to give you an advantage over 2WD in certain situations. The only reason I'm still watching videos on the Ignis Allgrip is to learn a bit more about the Allgrip system controls, because as you say the user manual gives no help at all on how to use it. 5:22 was really useful for me, thanks Marek. At least I'll know what to do if I ever drive up a grassy bank with the Ignis... which I actually don't do very often :-)

  • @ForViewingOnly

    @ForViewingOnly

Just an update: In the summer months, the Ignis Allgrip gets over 63 miles per gallon when driven sensibly, which is absolutely incredible! In the winter, and I'm in my 2nd UK winter with the Ignis Allgrip, I'm getting 58 miles per gallon when doing short journeys where the car doesn't have much time to warm up, and getting 60, sometimes 61 mpg on longer trips. Honestly, I couldn't be happier. I'd like to see Suzuki make an all-electric version of the Ignis Allgrip in the future, but for now I'm over the moon with the fuel economy. The braking cameras can be a bit annoying... the collision alarm doesn't go off too often but it you're accelerating towards a wall or a parked car on a corner, rather than decelerating or braking, the collision warning alarm goes off. Still, one of these days it might save me from a true collision. I've never had the car brake for me automatically, just sound the collision warning alarm.

I don't think that it is the number of volts that counts for a hybrid system, but the Ah of the batteries and the horsepower of the electric motor. If I' am not mistaken, the battery of the Ignis is 10Ah, which is comparable to other mild-hybrid systems. Same for the ISG. I agree though that all such mild-hybrid systems are a gimmick, present only for regulatory reasons. So, I have had an Ignis Allgrip for two years. I am extremely scrutinizing about cars, my other car is an NC MX5 which I've had for 6 years and i love it. As for the Ignis? In terms of economy, low speed performance, ease of driving, space etc I find my Ignis to be very good. However, in terms of noise insulation, refinement, ride quality, stability in high winds, safety systems, looks and interior quality, it is bloody rubbish! And don't say 'but it's a cheap car', it wasn't. It was over £15,000. And now it's even more expensive. And Marek, I am also scrutinizing about reviewers. I find that you have good presentation skills, good knowledge and a relatively unbiased view. But you are also excessively harsh in your criticism at times, particularly with the Mazda 6. Which I am seriously considering buying next to replace the Ignis! So you haven't put me off. Oh, I nearly forgot. Your spoken English is splendid. Would be too niche a product for India. Hybrid and all-grip systems would add a lot to costs and people here do not spend beyond a point on small hatchbacks, no matter how good the features are. Many feel if that, might as well get another bigger vehicle near about the same price point. Maybe in future as the market and economy matures, Indian customers will have a wider choice.
