suzuki aerio 06 replace ball joint control arm

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

here's my experience with r & r the control arms which are integral with the ball joints. i used dorman arms @ $60 each. the entire process required 5 weeks. it certainly could have been done in less time but given the amount of rust - let the rust penetrant do its job or you risk stripping nuts that are hidden inside the unibody. i needed to buy around $130 in tools. i have $16 in temporary bolts. the 4 on order official suzuki bolts are $6 each. not sure what shipping will be on those. this could be a very expensive repair if rust has invaded your bushings. of course, i also had to have a $120 tow to get the car back to the house. when the joint failed there was a bit of damage done to the body as well. my short sightedness will cost me plenty should i decide to repair the cosmetic damage.

Makes me thankful my 03 has zero rust, and is somehow beautiful underneath

Thanks dude, was hoping someone could tell me about the two 14mm in the center of the sub frame before I crawl under and you're all over it. The kind of job that would cost you more than the quote at a shop.

the dorman control arms are still working fine. you must have watched the whole thing. the 14mm longitudinal bolts are towards the end of the vid.

Ha, yeah those 14mm were a piece of cake, least of my worries. I've now got a subframe somehow held on with one headless bolt (front right), it snapped off 1/4 from the head. I can actually move the subframe twisting it around that point as much as the guide dowel will allow, but it moves, still can't get any gap at the frame to subframe where that bolt is though. Also still haven't got the rear bolts out of the control arms but at least can soak them from the top with liquid wrench. Tried MAP gas torch, Sawzall will be next but this '06 with less than 100K on it is inching closer to getting parted out. Unbelievable poor design allowing rust to cause so many headaches, it rivals my daughter's Malibu design wise.

i saw some torch vids but decided not to try it but you did. i bet you get it done this weekend. you're that close. sometimes i think about replacing mine simply because it doesn't get great mileage but it's so easy to drive, insurance is affordable, most replacement parts are affordable (not so easy to install sometimes), timing chain instead of a belt and generally speaking it just doesn't break.

Thanks for the knowledge. I have an 05 aerio sx. Had almost the same issue. But the control arm bolt facing the rear just spins because it's loose from the nut but the metal inside the old bushing is seized onto the bolt so I gotta cut it out too. Just not sure what bolt size

there's nothing special about that bolt. i'm sure that suzuki uses it in multiple models. length, diameter and thread pitch are all you need. good luck!

@redshirt-scotty It all went fine. I was able to loosen subframe bolts enough to have room to work. Got hardware from Ace, Just didn't weld the new nut...

if i had more subs i would probably do more vids. generally do zuki vids when my zuki breaks. it's old now so that's more and more frequently these days.

This same thing happened to me a few weeks ago with my 05 and I slid down a hill over 100 feet with my passenger front at a 90 degree angle. I can't for the life of me get that vertical bolt out of my control arm.

i was going down a slight hill too at about 30mph. abs dash light is on now but brakes work fine otherwise. yup, those darn vertical bushing bolts. very rewarding repair though. you know you've accomplished something when this job is done.

@@redshirt-scotty I think I'll give it a go to cut that bolt like in the video and try to source one. I'm completely self learning in auto mechanic stuff because it is becoming a big hobby of mine so I'm replacing most of the suspension geometry on both front wheels to learn, but the car has old enough parts at 110,000 miles to make it equally worth it. A bit simpler side job compared to the engine rebuild I'm doing on my 91 miata so I think I can handle it somehow. I just need the aerio to get back to work so it's more important right now.

if you haven't already purchased control arms, avoid the really cheap ones. i've read bad things. my mid dollar dorman units are still fine after 5 months and 8k miles. i had a backup car, my old beetle, which i drove for 5 weeks. good luck. keep me posted. i like hearing from the suzuki community.
