Suzanne Ciani's Buchla Cookbook in VCV Rack - Ep1 | The Performance Patch

Музыка

1976, synthesizer pioneer Suzanne Ciani wrote a paper with all the answers to the question that all the modern performers are asking today. Here is an in-depth walkthrough this document, illustrated with free software VCV Rack.

    This is very helpful. I learned synthesis in 1974 on a Buchla 100. I have printed the “Cook Book”, to study with this series. My rack system is a 2600 “Blue” clone; not as warm as the Buchla but very usable. Your VCV lessons are helping me learn to better apply what equipment I have and what modules to consider. I look forward to working with the VCV Rack Quad Panners.

    So when we made the ocean generator and finished off the envelope. I just kinda sat and listened for 20 minutes. I never thought I'd ever make something this cool with white noise.

    Actually, she was the one who asked for this tutorial serie :D about a year ago I made a cover of a piece based on her cookbook and I contacted her. She said it was nice, impress by VCV but "shame there is no MARF module" and I should do the entire cookbook :-) one year later here we are. Right now I am in contact with her assistant, so this series can be used to as ressource for people to learn her technique

    Really valuable stuff, thank you! I think that if you take a bit more time to explain the connections between the different modules, i.e. which outputs go to which inputs, that would be very helpful. Especially now that the rack file doesn't work in VCV 2. Thanks again! :)

    this is great. I have to note however that the 258, as far as I know, is crossfading from sine to either saw or square

  • @pyer3354

    @pyer3354

    2 жыл бұрын

    thank you :-) you are right this is how it is shown on the panel, the crossfading is refered in the cookbook as "waveshaping". My tech knowledges are not great but you can find a 2009 forum talk between Tony from Makenoise and Mark Verbos about the actual difference between crossfading and waveshaping buchlatech.blogspot.com/2009/01/funny-waveshapes.html In VCV I used Vult wave shaping oscillator because of its rich tones, I set one to hit saw in max mod position, and the other one to square

    Thank you so very much for showing us how to achieve reproduction of Suzanne's work from the cookbook. I just recently got me a Buchla 200 and I can't seem to achieve the sound from the oscillators. Can you please tell me what waves are you supposed to use on the 3 oscillators? I wish I could send you a photo of my system. I've got Oscillators, Frequency Shifter, Quad Function Generator. 🤔

  • @samcarswell9890

    Love this! To get around the quad issue you could convert the output to binaural - iirc theres some vcv binaural encoders somewhere? I could be wrong tho
