Its nice to see Suunto getting some real world user love. I see all the big channels review Polar and Suunto and they always hate on them over Garmin and Coros. Truth is people like myself have used Suunto and Polar for years, especially Suunto. They always say about the lack of smart features or the sensors not being accurate, or the UI being confusing. My answer to all that is A: its a tracker with some smart features, not a smart watch with some teacking features. B: sensors are a very subjective thing and everyone is different. You need connected devices really for accuracy. If not then the data provided is enough for a general overview. As for the UI, ive literally never had a problem. I honestly dont see why people have a problem with Suunto UI or mobile app. Its really simple. Garmin to me just literally throws the kitchen sink at you and is overwhelming to use fully. So its really good to see a normal person with a normal out look on tech give a real world view on the Suunto race. Personally i think its a fantastic watch at a fantastic price. Good going Abby✌️

Hahaha, Kingsley here, as a fan of sports technology and an absolute nerd on KZread I see this trend too. Many videos are quick to slash the Suunto and Polar platforms. But not Garmin? (I love Garmin btw). Both Suunto & Polar really do deserve their fair share of love. One thing that has BLOWN MY MIND is how common it is during Navigating with Garmin for the device to completely lose GPS signal without notifying the athlete (a major flaw that no reviewers are mentioning).. it's happened to me on more times that I can count on my hands (nearly ended my race), my friends Fenix 7X Pro (got us completely lost in south Wales) and I've heard elite athletes mention this issue on the Tea & Trails podcast: Lucy Gossage (namedrops Damien Hall) and spine race winner Jack Scott all talk about Garmin navigation malfunctions. Not one reviewer has mentioned it 🤣 Thanks for sharing your experience mate. Yeah the Suunto app is fantastic, might even be the best app experience?! Strava Premium features, without the paid subscription 😍 I have honestly experienced my growing pains with the Suunto watch UI but it's heading in the right direction. I really do love using the touch screen, and on the Race, for me, I feel a bit limited compered to the Vertical. But most importantly since the updates the UI has become a much smoother, reliable & pleasurable experience ☺ Cheers again mate, I agree, even myself.. I maybe dive a little too deep into the specs, & there's a place for that. But Abie shows us how a normal person (not a geek haha) experiences using the Suunto Race and it looks like she's loved her time with it 🔥Peace out 🧡

@@ActiveIdeas You've got to dive into the specs if your doing an initial review. But the difference with you is that you've had Abby do a separate review from the other side of the fence. Where else does that happen DC, summit and Des don't do that really. Not bashing them as I really enjoy their content. But there's simply no denying they do appear biased. Maybe it's to do with the fact they are first choice to receive review units. I would imagine there's a fine line to walk. Keep up the great work and hey.......... We are getting a new 2024 Polar grit x pro anytime now it looks like from the website. Should be very interesting to see what they offer VS what Suunto have gave us with the Vertical and race series. Must admit they are going to have to go some to beat the Race for the money. Till the next video peace out also✌️👊

@@ChaseTheSummit I agree it’s not the smoothest experience, and the heart rate accuracy is very subjective. I personally don’t train without a belt whether it’s with the polar or the Suunto. Make no mistake that I enjoy your content too as it’s not just about tech. Everyone has their own view and for me Garmin has to many bells and whistles and has not been reliable for me. But like I said we are all different. If I was a reviewer, I would probably favour Polar and Suunto. Being a truly unbiased reviewer is probably the hardest thing of all I would imagine. But like @Activeideas, keep up the good work and the content coming. It’s doesn’t matter that we don’t agree on the Suunto race, it’s fine. It’s good for everyone to be different.

It's the love of Garmin I just cannot relate to. The coros reviews I think are as mixed as the reviews for Suunto or Polar. But all the garmin reviews tend to be net positive, yet my experience - and that of many others I know (see this video also), is that Garmins over promise and under deliver pretty consistently It's especially strange for DCR, who spends soooooo much time telling us how neutral he is, buying his own devices or sending them back when finished with samplers (although then has a meltdown when Coros don't send him a pace 3, because he chose to interpret some unnamed criticism about another reviewer as 'about him'. Shows how much he really values his independence, if not getting a free review watch is such a trigger). All other brands, very much including coros, seem to be less comprehensive and have more 'compromises' (while in Coros' case usually ignoring the way above par/competition build quality) than Garmin - but real world users often seem very happy.

Nice video. I bought suunto race the very first day that came out. Two days later I ran 100 miler trail race. GPS accuracy was unbelievable. Then when I read all these reviews about heart rate inaccuracies I decided to do a personal comparison. Suunto race wrist HR against my polar vantage v + polar H10 chest strap. I never saw the inconsistencies everybody's talking about. During training and it was a trail run with intervals the results were almost identical, maybe once or twice I saw a three pulse difference. Then I took both watches for a pool swim, both wrist HR and again the results were almost identical. In my case the watch has been an incredible value so far

Thankyou! ❤️ Thanks for sharing your experience with the Suunto Race and how you've found the heart rate! I must admit.. overall I have had good results from the heart rate sensor. Where it matters for me, HRV & AvgHR, have been perfect! I have found for max heart rate and resting HR I did see better results with Garmin and Apple Watch Ultra.. but those watches are over twice the price. Like you said.. incredible value so far, very excited to see what Suunto do next 🙈

Now I just cannot go to anything but an amoled display on a watch. I tried the Garmin Fenix but I just cant get used to the dimmer display. And arguably, without Garmin pioneering the way with sports watch technology, other brands might not be where they are today. They definitely put the pressure on the market to add/offer TOPO maps, for example. But I know what you mean, the balance of love between Garmin, Coros, Suunto, Polar doesn’t seem fair on the internet.. especially on KZread 🤣 The perfect sports watch doesn’t exist yet, and Garmin certainly does have it flaws. It was tough to take the Race off my wrist but I had some big races planned.. the Arc Of Attrition 104 miles (check the race vlog on my channel, it took me 33 hours) and the Rasselbock backyard ultra (I ran 4 mile loops for 24 hours).. so the Vertical has better suited my needs that past month🌟I was reminded of how bloody good the battery life was on the Vertical when I ran with maps for 33 hours and finished with a staggering 32% with no charging; zero battery anxiety. • @ActiveIdeas

    @ActiveIdeas

    3 ай бұрын

Thanks for dropping a comment 🧡 Kingsley speaking here - I suffer with insomnia and most watches struggle with my sleeping patterns. To my surprise the Suunto Race is extremely good at tracking sleep duration! Both sleep time & wake times have been good ☺️ I hope Suunto add the ability to edit sleep times though, to really fine tune your sleep tracking if you need to. Also it would be nice if in the app you could manually add sleep (if you forget to wear your watch or have bad skin and need a break from wearing it). Suunto also recently added nap detection and the nap duration has been very good there too. Although, some of my shorter naps (>20mins) were missed, I’m not sure if you have to hit a minimal amount of time to qualify for a nap, not looked into it. But us ultra runners are crazy enough to consider a 3 minute sleep “restorative” 🙈🤣 All the best, and if you have any questions for me or Abie, just drop a comment 🔥👊🏽

Great question mate! As it stands it’s just the watch faces that are already on the watch. Just the other day though Suunto added three more functional watch faces via an update (on race, 9 peak pro & Vertical).. unfortunately there’s no “ConnectIQ” on Suunto like we see with Garmin but from what I’ve seen on Suunto forums, lots of customers have requested this further customisation so it wouldn’t surprise me if we see this soon in a future update 🔥 Suunto already have “SuuntoPlus” for downloadable watch faces for when you’re within an activity, so I hope they expand this to watchfaces/functions outside of an activity. I honestly don’t even know how to properly describe it. But basically a couple of hours into an activity under harsh conditions (cloudy, in mountain valleys, under thick dense forests) the gps acquisition would be completely lost and the maps orientation would start going crazy, to the point where you’ll have no idea where you actually are. Unfortunately, flicking into Multi-Band does nothing to help either. I know this isn’t a device-specific fault because I’ve seen it on many of my own various Garmin devices, on friends Garmin’s and heard elite/famous athletes (Jack Scott, Damien Hall, Lucy Gossage) talk about it on podcasts such as Tea & Trails podcast. To put it simply, the watches just suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, fail to navigate half way through an activity 🧭 The Coros Pace 3 looks awesome, it also might be worth looking on eBay at Coros Apex 2 Pro’s.. some great deals.. but yeah Suunto Race would be an unreal upgrade from the Pace 2 .. you won’t regret it ❤️

Hey man! Thanks for dropping a comment, super appreciate the support! It’s abit of a yes and no answer for the Race.. with Garmin you can click on the map and Garmin will take you, it’s not so simple on the Race. I have used the map to Navigate on the fly just using the watch’s map and working things out myself. You can also really quickly point your watch at a landmark miles away in the distance and quickly create a bearing. For more in depth turn by turn or POI navigation you’ll have to click the map on the Suunto App and then send it to your watch. Providing you have phone signal, this will take less than a minute and you’ll have more choice and customisation of your route than Garmin will give you straight from the watch. Hope this helps 🌟

I’m just curious what Garmin model was it. I have an Enduro 2, been using it for about a year and it never got me off trail. It’s always spot on. Not to mention the wrist HR sensor which is extremely accurate in my case (Suunto is way behind here). Mapping on the Suunto is also nice but way less powerful than Garmin’s, let’s be honest. Although I have to give credit to Suunto’s compass responsiveness. That’s pretty awesome. The Garmin one quite lags compared to it but even so, it’s gotten better and always finds its bearing even if it takes a bit longer and a tad frustrating at times 🙃

I’ve seen this issue on my Fenix 7 pro, Lewis (our friend) had the same on his Fenix 7X Pro, Lucy Gossage talks about this issue on her the tea + trails podcast episode and winner of the spine race Jack Scott has described this issue, talks about it in his interviews & has since switched to Suunto to improve his navigation. It’s so odd & hard to describe but under dense trees/forest or up in the mountains or in canyons .. if the weathers cold and cloudy⛰️ after a few hours the GPS on the Garmins just stops working!? Completely disconnects from satellites and does tell you either .. so you keep following a incorrect direction and then it will randomly snap back and you realise you’re wildly off course 🙈 Not even switching to multi-band fixed it 🤷🏽‍♂️ I have no idea if this is just a simple software fix, or if it’s a weakness of the gps chipset & antenna design 🤣 Feature-wise though.. Garmin navigation is packed with them; unrivalled. I really like the “around me” feature which will show you all the closest pubs and snack shops 🙈 I also like that you can select a point on the map on Garmin and the watch will independently (without a phone connection) calculate turn by turn routes to that location 🤯 Garmin is still miles ahead many fronts, another benefit is the HR monitor.. I guess you get the price tag with it too.. I won’t lie, I can’t WAIT for the Enduro 3 🙈

@@ActiveIdeas Thanks a lot for your reply. Really appreciate it and very helpful. I’ve never lost connection on my watch. It does have a bug, once in a while, if I start an activity it immediately says connected but I know it’s a false positive so I restart the activity and now it takes a bit more and works as expected after that. I guess, in the first case, it just fetches data from the cache which is obviously wrong. But anyway, as I said, I’ve never lost satellite connection. Don’t know exactly if I’ve been through very dense tree cover under cloudy conditions, though I might have on a few occasions, if I remember correctly. Our hike with Lewis was 7 hours in total where it happened once (but lasted for about an hour). I wouldn’t mind so much but it’s that it doesn’t tell you it’s struggling which concerns me, you kinda just work it out yourself when you’re like “this isn’t right” or if you have a second watch on you and you’re like “so that’s what the maps should look like” 🤣 But yeah, be careful, and test it out, see if you can recreate it ❤️ Let me know Yeah just type in Lucy gossage tea and trails podcast and it will be the first video that pops up. Hey mate, I just had a Quick Look, there are loadsss of sports so maybe I missed it, but couldn’t seem to find E-bike. Although Suunto’s Custom sports option should work.. I’d make an E-bike mode with all the options and data you specially want just like me and Abie do for a custom “ice bath” sport profile. Thanks Man, will do 👊🏽🔥

Just looking for your honest opinion on which watch to get earther the suunto vertical or the suunto race watch?

  • @ActiveIdeas

The honest reality is that I have had both the Race and the Vertical sat in my bedroom for the past 3-4 weeks. And every single day I’ve woken up and chosen the Vertical. I must emphasise that battery life is extremely important to me. Having said that, it is also of my honest opinion that the Race is the best value for money watch available today. It’s definitely better value than the Vertical. If you’re not running ultras longer than 50 miles I would suggest getting the Race to 99% of people. It is quite honestly staggering how many features the race as for the Price. But yeah. For me. The vertical makes sense, I love how good the solar charging is, in the year I’ve tested it I’ve not once worried about battery life. I’m old school and am completely happy with MIP displays and buttons rather than a scroll wheel etc. Lastly, I’ll add, I did speak to Abie recently who has now tested the 9 peak pro, the vertical and the race and I think her favourite is the Race. Video on this soon 🔥 Hope this helps ❤️

Any issues recording metrics like other reviews have noted or with lag? I want this for rucking metrics rather than taking my phone everywhere

Training metric and lag issues seem to be completely fixed from the updates (there’s been 2-3 updates since the release). One reason I was hesitant to drop a super early full review was because DC rainmaker (advised by Suunto) said the Monday after the release of the Race a software update was coming.. that update took a little longer than a week 😬🤣 But happy to report that everything is now running super smoothly and as it is suppose to 😍🌟 HR tracking is still.. ropey but the average HR & HRV sleep tracking is spot on and for anything more (high intensity workouts) id advice a Chest Strap 👊🏽 Best wishes

Which is nice? Suunto race or garmin forerunner 965?

Both are lovely! For battery life and navigation I personally recommend Suunto. For lifestyle and lots of data Garmin. Hope this helps 🔥

    - Bad HR - No Ant+ - Only 1 sensor per type, so if you have 2 HR straps or some bike sensors, you have to pair/unpair them every time - Lags everywhere Considering a Garmin 165 can be purchased for roughly half the price, what is the point of this Suunto?

Apples and oranges here my man .. two completely different watches for completely different runners ❤️ Anyone who needs navigation or TOPO maps is not going to consider a watch like the Forerunner 165. Also for ultras where battery life comes in to play there is no comparison. The Race is simply better. Depends if you value software animation, running dynamics data, HR and Ant+ more than the race’s superior gps, battery life and navigation features 🤷🏽‍♂️

Abie’s been testing the Race with the Apple IPhone 14 Pro, I’ve been testing with the iPhone 15.. both working great connection-wise and the app is genuinely a pleasure to use.. the app is definitely one of Suunto’s strengths. Those “find my iPhone” features all work on the watch, notifications are great and Do Not Disturb is quick/easy to activate. I do hope in the future that Suunto give us more options for notifications (vibrate only, sound only, vibrate/sound off with notifications still active, more options for notifications within sport profiles/out of sport profiles) but yeah… All good for the Apple 🍎 gang! 🔥

Trust your gut and you’ll be happy with the decision 👊🏽 Do you need the battery life of the vertical? If not.. why not try the race, it’s pretty much the only product in its price category with all its feature offerings :)
