I've been wanting to get into multi-day trips in the rockies. Seems most people recommend this compass. I really appreciate the knowledge you've shared!
One of the basic compass 🧭 videos I've ever watched. Please keep it up.
What an outstanding tutorial! Simple, but thorough. Your USMC training shows through. Thank you very much.

good stuff
Superb explanation of the MC2 compass features. I spent 30 years in the US Army, with much of it in the field or flying medevac helicopters and feel I know a thing or two about navigating with a map & compass. This video is simply outstanding and offers the clearest explanation of compass features & magnetic declination I've come across -- very well done! I would have liked to see more about using the clinometer, but this is hands-down a terrific video for everything else about this compass.

Thank you very much.
Sir, respectively, I will tell you that if you are using the SUUNTO Compass, as you used to use your lensatic compass, you are using the SUUNTO in a probable wrong way. You are supposed to use the lensatic compass as you did at the beginning of this video, that is, close to your facial cheek(s). However, to use a SUUNTO Compass, --> to take advantage of both of the "sights" of the SUUNTO, you need to take your azimuth bearings at arms' length, using the sights as in a rifle. Just trying to help you, I had the same erroneous notion as you showed, --> you from the Marine Corps, and I from my Army days. Otherwise, your video was excellent, and very informative. Thank you, Sir. Oscar
Just bought Commenga and the military map and land navigation manual. Never really learned. I all of the sudden started feeling I had to learn,so I am taking the hint and trying. Thank you for your a service .

+Paul DiDonato Thank you.
FINALLY! I've watched at least a dozen videos on this topic and this is the first one that actually explained the features of the compass. Most videos praised the Suunto MC2, but they don't get into the nitty-gritty. Thank you very much. I hope you get a million subscribers and get rich in the process!
At last someone who actually shows how to set the magnetic declination. Thanks for this excellent video!

"American Backpacker" (Andy) also does it.
Excellent close up explanation! Finally! And with a wooden pointer. Thank you.
Best video on the internet for the person who doesn't know anything like me. I'm about to order all of those books. I just love knowledge. Thanks so very much. No one on the internet that i've seen has a better video to teach someone how to get started in the navigation system. And believe me I'm a hard core researcher. I feel like I just hit the jackpot for getting started. Thanks so very much!!!
Fantastic video. I liked that you went slow in pointing out the visuals.
Great video - takes his time to clearly explain the basic steps of navigation. Thanks
Excellent job with a detailed explanation with knowledge, integrity and a clear understandable presentation. Thank you for your service and be safe 😎
What a great explanation...you gave a simple overview and made it so clear... Thank you
I have the Suunto MC-2 D, my kids and I are trying orienteering as an outdoor activity, and your thorough review of the compass was extremely helpful to both my kids... and myself. Thanks for the video!

A very detailed video filled with comprehensive information well done.👏👏👏🍻
Thank you for the information. I need a refresher course on navigation.
Thanks for a great review video. The parts where you show the declination adjustment screw on the back and the tool that comes with the compass to use it, and where you point out all the luminescent parts on the front, were especially helpful to me. You can't see any of that very well, on the websites of retailers that offer to sell the compass. Semper Fi.
To prevent wearing away, paint bottom information on base plate compass with quick dry clear nail polish.
Greatly appreciate this video!! Very informative since I'm in the look out for the best, easiest, affordable, and multifunctional all rounder compass for navigation. This's just ticking all the boxes so far.
Great video and instruction. I might suggest though that the quality of this compass has gone downhill. I had the MC2 /D compass for about a 6 months but it recently developed a huge bubble. I called the warranty line and told the person I live in Tucson. After looking for 10 minuets he said that maybe I could try sending it to a place in Ogden Utah then they might be able to send it to Finland and I could get it back in 1 to 2 months. I asked for the address of the place in Utah. He looked for about 5 minutes and then told me I needed proof of purchase. I asked if having a compass was proof that I bought one but he said he needed the receipt which I didn't have. So after a 20 min call I was told to go kick rocks. Bad quality no warranty help. I will make sure to warn my friends to stay away from Suunto!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Just getting started and your video has been the clearest so far . Thank you again. Keep up the good work.
Great compass I got one, my only concern was breaking it. it's not tough like the military issue compass but I found that it fits perfect in plastic soap dish case 1.99 from wall mart it's like it was made for it so with all the gear I carry in my ruck i don't worry about it getting broken if I drop my ruck out of vehicle in a hurry.
I have watched lots of compass instructional video's and this one is the best. Great instruction and camera work.

Thank you very much Mea! I have watched many videos and my one complaint is that they do not offer any close ups of the area they are speaking of thus I have learned from their mistakes. This has made me produce better videos for everyone out there to watch. Have a great day! Ken

One of the things that drives me nuts with some vids is they start off saying enter your bearing on the compass. Ok, but where did you get the bearing from. They skip over the whole part of computing the bearing from a map probably because they don't understand the concepts of True North vs Magnetic North and Declination.

Superb concise and clear lesson, now to PRACTICE.
After watching 5 other videos and getting nowhere, this one was on the spot! Kudos!
Great Vid, you know most people don't know this but, the Safest Place in the World is right behind a Marine
Much thanks, great and thorough information, best explanation I've seen, I do have the map and compass book , I have been debating between the Suunto MC2 and the K&R Alpin Pro this vid proved i should and will be getting the Suunto
This is a great review/walkthrough of the suunto compass. Looking into getting my first compass soon and have been eyeing the suunto. Thanks for the vid, you did a great job of explaining to someone with no idea what any of those markings are for, understand. I still need to learn some of the lingo and reading the manual I believe would help me a lot but your vid was very thorough and I appreciate you making it.
Excellent overview that made my decision easy. Great job, thanks!
Thank you! I'm new to the compass, this helped with both basic and sophisticated instructions. Appreciated the book recommendations too, great idea to carry in the backcountry.
Great explanation. Thank you for taking the time to put together the video.
Firt time viewer, now a scubscriber....GREAT instructional video...thanks.
Excellent presentation, thorough and easy to understand. Thanks mate.
Best video on youtube on how to use a compass! Greetings from Germany! Thank you so much, an honor to write to a Marine, my hat off to you.

Great Review. Mines just arrived so looking forward to using it. I came across your channel some years ago via Darren Funky Prepper, when I was getting back into bushcraft and prepping. Good to be back, having taken a couple of years away with family stuff and getting into photography. Cheers.
The new MC2 don’t have that black portion of the red arrow on the dial. Only the half red arrow. Thanks for a great tutorial.
Deserves a like for sure.
I just found your channel. I have subscribed and set the notification. Thank you for your service and thank you for taking the time to put out this great video.
Great video , Thankyou . You are a squared away Marine !

Thanks so much for putting this together. You did a nice job, can't wait to try it out myself.
Thank you for such a clear explanation on how to use a compass.
Very helpful and informative - thank you!!
Your overview was thorough, quite helpful and a useful guide to setting magnetic declination. The links are handy as well. The only suggestion I could make is to list the authors and titles of the books you referenced.
Great video! I like your style of teaching.
great video, thank you very much. I bought one of these a while back and haven't used it. Just now breaking it out an your video is awesome.

Okay, finally. I understood the majority of what was said in this video after watching many, many others. Definitely one to save to a playlist to review again later as this is the compass I ultimately want to get.
Great video. I wanted to learn about compasses and bought three makes. My suunto global mirror had a 2°+ 'deviation' from the get-go. Sent it back no problem. Luckily I had other compasses to compare, all brand new. Also read about compasses switching poles and the earth itself switching poles. I read about spinning ships and planes to correct 'deviation' because of all the metal to set their compasses. OMG! Thank God I only have to ride a subway.
Thanks very much. As a total beginner, this vid has helped me more than anything else re: compass use and basic navigation. Think I'll get this exact compass and a map or two, then Practice!! Cheers!

Nice compass, very similar to my old Silva Ranger (with clinometer) which had the declination adjustment screw. It lasted 40 years and then a bubble got in, but it still works.
Great video. Thanks for the information.
Oh my god, you have the best tutorial ever! Thank you so much :-)

Clearly stated review, nice job. Great compass to purchase if you plan to advance your orienteering skills beyond basic.
I have the MC2-G, I like the way they work. Also, great job explaining on your vid.
great job, thanks for the information.
Great video, love the book references. I learned land navigation in the Marine Corps also, 0311. I just subscribed.
Excellent review and advice. Thank you.
Great video and thank you for posting!
Nice close up shots!
Great job. I especially liked the details you gave on the parts of the Suunto. Note the graduations on the declination scale are the inclination scale too. Inclination would make a good topic. It can be useful in several areas to include avalanche, hillside orienteering, and geology to measure dip of rocks. Always set, never forget, the declination if you work or travel to another area.

Good info. I was wondering about how the clinometer worked. 👍
Best review and use of a compass!
Excellent video!
Thanks for the orientation on my new compass. Question for you: Does one need to have a topographic map of the area for the compass to be of use, or will a simple road-map from a gas station do? Thanks again!
Such a good video thank you!
REALLY good review, thank you for the explanation. Subscribed
Good job, this is the best type of compass.
Thank you for video.

Thx you sir for your explanation
In looking at Suunto MC-2 compasses, they come in different models. Which model do you recommend (letters that follow after “MC-2”?)
Nice Job. I was waiting on you to say how it can be difficult to use a military compass lol. Great Video! Keep up the Good Work. PATHFINDERS UP!!!!
Excellent video! Camera quiality is great so one can see detials good. Audio quality is great. Speed of talking is perfect to understand what is discussed, explaination is to the point without any nonesense. Good speaking pauses between subjects to audience can follow. Perfect. Class example of a excellent tutorial video. Question: at 12:47, shouldn't the bearing be 63degree instead of 61? As the increments are in 2 degree's and it seems top index line is between the 1st and 2nd increments
nice very nice glad to see the videos coming in
