On this hike, I team up with Dan from ‪@backpackingadventures4813‬ to tackle the Susquehannock Trail System which is an 85 mile loop located in north-central Pennsylvania. This trail has been on my radar for years and I was glad to finally get this hike completed. The northern gateway is located just off of Route 6 seven miles east of Coudersport where you can register your vehicle with the forestry office. Dan and I hiked this trail going clockwise starting from the forestry office. Most of the trail follows old logging roads, railroad grades, and Civilian Conservation Corps fire trails. There are multiple connector trails as well allowing hikers to make smaller loops. The trail does feature multiple shelters which are first-come-first-serve and passes through or near six state parks. We completed this hike in June and water sources were plentiful. I highly recommend picking up a map at the forestry office as it is very well done and exclusively what I used for navigation on this hike. Dan used the FarOut app which was also very helpful-especially to know exact mileage to the next water source or campsite. The STS is a very remote trail which is difficult to maintain so be sure to account for this if planning a summer hike as overgrowth can be a real problem. The STS doesn’t offer many vistas but does provide a hiker with some of the most remote hiking in all of Pennsylvania.
