    I watched this film after seeing THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE and PROFONDO ROSSO, and I've got to say that SUSPIRIA scared the shit out of me because I watched it at night, being alone in the house, and "hearing" noises in the room next door now and again. A very atmospheric experience. 😁😁😁

    A girlfriend once told me she had seen a horror movie when she was young and ever since never wanted to ever watch another horror movie. That's all she said and all I knew. I asked her if it was Suspiria and she simply stared at me speechless. Of course it was Suspiria.

    The opening narrator part is so creepy, the calm voice with the ominous music, made you feel like he is telling a bedtime story, a fair tale of horror and death.

    I think that voice belongs to Dario Argento. He usually makes his voice heard in the movies and shows the killers hands :)

    It's unfortunate it was actually unnecessary - he didn't even FINISH the story. Why include it?

    Originally, Suspiria was conceived of as a fairy tale sort of presentation. Earlier in development, the main characters were to be younger, and it was composed much like a fairy tale would be, but modern and much more overtly dark and disturbing. The opening narration is intended to introduce the main character, the premise of the story, and to set the tone as at least reminiscent of a fairy tale. It is quite necessary to the presentation. Though I will totally say, the first time I heard it, I wasn't sure if he was starting to set up a math problem. "Suzy Bannion left New York at 9 AM..."

    hushicho The execution was its problem, but having to explain to us something that we visually will be seeing right after is an odd choice. I’d prefer the music to set the tone instead.

    Goddamn, I really need to rewatch Suspiria one day. Still one of my favorite intros ever, so immersive and enchanting. In any other movie this would be too over-the-top, but Suspiria goes beyond even the concept of "top" in all of its art design, so here the intro fits and is AWESOME.

    +vanishy0urself I agree! It's one of my favorite intros, so foreboding. I have three copies of this on DVD as it's one of my top horror movies of all time (favorite is Halloween '78). The story is meh, but the music, cinematography, sets, casting (Harper looks like a doe) etc. are all among the best of all time. And the color show all throughout the film!

    +workoutfanatic787 I agree-the story is flimsy and the acting is mediocre, but the music and cinematography are excellent. I also like that it's a 1970's movie. Suspiria used to be available on youtube, until it was blocked.

    I always feel real tension and anxiety watching this opening, about the thought of showing up in a foreign country like this at night, in the pouring rain, and having difficulty hailing a cab to get to your destination. Plus, the night time rainy shots of the German buildings and architecture as the cab passes by, and seeing the pouring water in the sewers and drains, only adds a sense of foreboding and an ominous feel to it all. And this of course before the real horror of the movie has yet to begin, lol.

    It is a powerful intro indeed. It catches the viewer's attention and introduces him into the atmosphere of the movie perfectly. Even such a seemingly trivial scene can be meaningful. Modern filmmakers have such a great technology at their disposal now, but one can't see such beautiful scenes anymore...

    That petite girl Jessica Harper is so meaningless. No special skill in acting, always her same childish face . She is really the wrong note in this movie. Who has recommended her to director Argento ?

  • @justin12378

    @justin12378

    Dario Argento recommended her to Dario Argento, he liked her because of her petite stature and doe-like expression making her seem innocent and fairytale-esque. She’s supposed to be reminiscent of Snow White or a disney princess. The film is set near the Black Forest and has a structure similar to Snow White with an “evil queen” and the main character unraveling their schemes.

    I've twice tried to watch this movie, and both times I gave up halfway through. At no point did I feel any kind of tension, the acting is bad, and the music is way louder than the dialogue. Which is a shame, because it sure has interesting visuals.

    The acting is childish on purpose because originally director Dario Argento wanted to use teenagers and kids, but back into the days, the producers forbade him from using young actors in such a violent movie. So Argento tried to maintain the childish atmosphere using hidden details: for example, if you look at the doors you’ll see that the handle is placed significantly high. This because actors have to raise their hands over their body to open doors exactly like kids do.
