I made a DIY trainer using cam straps, PVC, & paranoid for foot loops as well as cargo tie down anchors & lag screws for mounting to floor joists. I hope you have a video onnthe Bowline as I was considering making something similar for an even smaller & lighter trainer for traveling or as you said throwing in a pocket or such for training outside! I don't leave my wooden rings outside so a cheap PVC & straps/rope are perfect for hanging from a tree & using for me & my kids to train & play w outside!

Hi! I first saw about your video on reddit bwf about hamstring curls and subscribed and watched some of your videos! I bought a cheap suspension trainer and it comes with the attachment so it can be used with a closed door inside the house which made my setup easier and cheaper than buying rings (rings are less popular, hard to find and more expensive in my country). Since we are all stuck home because of coronavirus, I like that I can finally do rows, upper back exercises, hamstring curls with my suspension trainer! I would appreciate more suspension trainer content!

Personal preference is the key. I don't got to park or train away from home and if I occasionally do train away from home I just go basic body weight training. I've got a set of rings permanently setup, I've got a bag of resistance bands. I've even got a Fortress Power Tower (which is pretty good, I must say), Swiss balls etc. But rings are my jam at my age and circumstance. So, what do you like? Go with that! Great video as always Matt. PS I'm 60 years old, so I just do what I want as I feel it and not stress the rest!

I started training on rings about a year ago. I absolutely love them! Great for building shoulder stability and they force you to use your scapula properly. Great for building your biceps and forearms. You can learn the false grip on rings which is imperative for getting a muscle up. Finally I think rings are much safer than a fixed bar because they allow you to move in all planes of motion. Oh and I almost forgot, I traveled around Europe for two months with my rings and was able to use them everywhere! Very portable. I got mine at Rep Fitness for $39. Each strap is numbered making it really easy to set them up evenly. If you want to develop more strength and see huge gains in your calisthenics, buy yourself some rings!

  • @RedDeltaProject

I agree, the movement and instability certainly makes these a win either way. And you're right, those numbered straps make the adjustments so much easier. They should be mandatory in all designs.

I have the Monkii Bars 2. I mainly bought them for rows but my current living situation has me using them for pull-ups and chin-ups because the ceiling is too low to use the bar (my head hits the ceiling). I don’t really enjoy using anything other than a solid bar for vertical pulling but it gets the job done for now.

I'm glad you made this video. I was wondering about your thoughts on the rings but it was never really important in comparison to other questions I had, so I always forgot to simply ask. Also, since many folks will be buying into s. trainers for the temp sessions away from the gym, they would be best served by the info in this video. Personally, since I've been working with your DIY Prussik trainer 2.0, I've never bothered moving away from it. Though, I am thinking of upgrading to the cam trainer and building one for my mom to send to her, since she is finally getting back into fitness again. As for costs, when one thinks about the up front cost, it really depends on a few variables: do they like DIY, do they expect to use these only a few times, do they expect these could be a great addition to their gym routine, and finally, how much would each month at the gym cost in comparison to a complete, portable gym like either of these options?

lol! Is it wrong to imagine the olympic judges are watching when I would use rings :) That extra control may very well be due to that contact on the forearm I was mentioning before, that and the lack of the rotating handle. You wouldn't think a rotating handle would make that much difference, but it is a moving part which can feel a bit less connected through the motion.

Simple, that's your weakest muscle in your pull-chain. So just stick with it and your forearms will catch up with the rest of your pulling moves.

Maybe you're doing a too strong wrist flexion during your biceps curl (something like a false grip), which activates your forearm even before your first rep. Try to have less flexed wrists, or try a neutral grip (hammer curl for example)

I have used both and I like rings a bit better. A couple months back I got some wood rings, 1.25” thick and they feel much better than the various plastics. I like that the ring straps are separate for pull ups, dips, holds and body rows, and other things. And 1.25” diameter rings feel better than 1” and build grip strength. The suspension trainers are more compact for travel.

Muscle ups and all things you do without contact to the ground, such as handstands, skin the cat, even dips etc. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, it depends on what you are going to do. Why should I limit myself ? For ground work and leg training, I mostly prefer ST, for all things in the air, I prefer rings, as they easily allow changes in grip and direction. If I only could chose one however, I would go with rings, as they are more versatile overall. There is a reason why rings are one of the oldest training devices and still exist.
