Suspension Comparison

Спорт

Asking riders a preference when it comes to suspension is almost like asking which motor oil or air filter oil is the best. It's a loaded question and everyone is going to have a different opinion on it. In this video, Gnarly Routes rider and guide, Cole Kirkpatrick, dives into the suspension options for the KTM XC-W and EXC-F range of bikes and compares three different forks and two shocks, all tuned and setup by Solid Performance.
When it comes to suspension, even OEM equipment, always remember to check your sag frequently and to always service your suspension according to the intervals in the owners manual. Having an understanding of what the various clicker adjustments do will also allow you to better dial in your suspension. Don't be afraid to make clicker adjustments on the trail and always take notes so that you have a base setting to return to.

Interesting comparison. Good to know there's some room to tune the Xplor stuff. I was under the impression that it was fairly limited. I was hoping for more data. It would be really cool to see some suspension dyno curves. Another good comparison might be a timed run on a known, consistent loop with each setup to let the stopwatch tell the tale.

Thanks for the comment. The XPLOR suspension is plenty capable when the spring rates and valving are dialed in for rider skill level and weight. At this time, we can't provide any suspension dyno curves but some lap time battles are doable.

Gnarly Routes do you have any experience with Kreft suspensions tuning? I currently ride a Solid Performance setup and i absolutely love it, spring cone valve fork and Super Traxx shock, but was curious about Kreft. I hear good things about them. P.S the cone valves are going in my coffin with me hahaha

Hi Marco, the PDS bike (XC-W / EXC-F) is going to have a slightly shorter wheelbase and a shorter fork than the Link bike (XC / SX). The PDS shock is simple to remove from the bike, it only takes two bolts where the linkage shock takes a lot longer to remove from the bike. Performance wise, the link shock is going to feel better in high speed rough trail and jumping. The PDS shock can handle that stuff but not as good as the linkage shock. If you're just trail riding and not racing, the PDS platform is a great way to go.

Hi Rizzo, thanks for the question. We reached out to Solid Performance to get an answer regarding prices on the suspension in the video. WP Cone Valve Spring Fork, generation 1 (black upper, black lower; same as what is featured in the video) Retail $3300 - Comes with free setup, specific tuning widgets are additional, but depend on specific application. Most of the time the stock tuning parts (cones, cone spring, and pressure springs are good for off-road) Comes with (3) sets of springs & special spring preload tool These are limited qty and will be soon discontinued for the newer XACT Pro fork, see below. WP XACT Pro Cone Valve Spring Fork, Gen 2 (silver upper & lower tubes; this is the new generation fork) Retail $3500 - Setup is additional $250 Comes with (1) spring for rider weight These are also limited qty due to the high demand in the MX segment. Some of the new key features internally: New cone adapters for better low speed control and seal (more finite clicker feeling and setting consistency) New compression posts for less installed pressure spring preload (plusher ride) New rebound pistons New lighter bottom out cone assy Updated coatings, internal and external WP Cone Valve AER Fork, generation 1 (black upper, black lower; same as what is featured in the video) Retail $3300- SALE Price - $2200 (Call Solid Performance) These come setup, complete at no extra charge. Comes with air pump and special adapter to properly fill + / - air chambers. WP PDS Trax Shock Retail $2200 Same as the other Gen1 material, there is no additional labor setup charge. Also comes with (3) springs, all in straight rate - which is a spring unique to the Pro Components lineup within the PDS classification. They have configurations for all PDS bike, 150XCW to 500 EXC A few key points about all of the Pro Components that Solid Performance sells: They offer trade in’s on stock components or older Pro Components for clients looking to keep costs down. They offer a “Test Ride” program to allow anyone, near or far, to ride the Pro Comp fork or shock before they commit. Rider calls up, signs the test drive form, they build the suspension for them at no charge or obligation, the customer covers the shipping and a deposit. After the test ride they follow up with a consultation, and have a more informed discussion on if the customer wants to move forward. Long term, Solid Performance doesn't charge to change the setting if the customer asks. Ie; no additional re-valve charge long term, as long as the suspension is in for a service. This also encourages the rider to take the suspension from bike to bike knowing they only have to have it serviced to re-tune it for the newer bike model or displacement. Even skill level and discipline changes are offset by simple tweaks internally. I hope that answers your questions, feel free to call Solid Performance if you're curious about any of the information listed above.

Blows my mind people pay that kind of money for a new bike with open cartridge forks. When every other brand stopped using that junk 20 years ago.
