KTM / Husqvarna 350 UPDATE.. Should have bought the 500?

Ойын-сауық

After a couple months of owning the FE 350 and KTM 350 XCFW, I have really gotten a chance to dissect the pros and cons and while there are some things I am not happy with, overall it is a damn good bike. But with my heart still set on a 300 two-stroke, do I regret sacrificing off-road performance, for on road? For now yes, but in the future I think this bike is still the best option for me, even over the 500 model which I talk about in this video.
What Jarvis do?

I had a 500. Couldn't sell it fast enough. For single track, it ran to hot and took to much effort. Went 350 and couldn't be happier. I also have a 690 for more "dual sport". Way better on the road than the 350/500 platform and still plenty capable off road. In the end, every bike can feel like a compromise based on how you're riding it.....which is why we all need AT LEAST three bikes :)

@@tieoneon1614 same! I miss my camo klx 250, I was green also when I had it now I’m on 300xcw and this fe350. I had a lot of fun on that super low maintenance 250. I’m concerned about the tight service intervals on the fe350 and concerned winding it out on the roads, it’s really a plated dirtbike. I think I’ll do a lot better now that I’m a better rider in the woods on the klx. Thinking about getting a klx 250 or 300 or crf and upgrading suspension.

You really need two bikes, Tanner. A single-track bike for the extremely gnarly stuff and a dual sport. IMHO there is no true swiss army knife, you will always have compromises with every single bike. For me, 350 is the sweet spot. Don't let one bad ride sour it, you have to keep in mind a 350 4-stroke will never be as good as a 250 2-stroke in a tight single track. I will say a Rekluse clutch and steering stabilizer really makes a 350 feel better on single track. Have a good day and the scooter videos are fun to watch!

I'm still riding my 09 KLR 650 that I settled on for a street legal, comfortable gravel road capable bike but have grown board with after so long, it's still a great back roads bike, but I'm yearning for lighter more off road still comfortable much lighter bike, though the 300l was it but to many complain about the soft suspension and I don't want to buy a new bike to rebuild, no sir I've done that with every bike I've owned. 500 is very smooth on the road, except when it's windy but what alternative is there for those of us who spend most of their time in the dirt. I thought long and hard and talked to other guys, especially any that did BDR's on the 350's. In the end, many said the post 20 500's were nearly as nimble as the 350, so I went for the overall performance rather than just the minor dirt advantage the 350 has. I don't race or rip single track hard, I think the 350 would be better for much faster riders off road on single track. Now that I've done a bunch of road inbetween dirt (getting to hotels etc.), I can say that I'd want nothing smaller than the 500 on the highway, I just wouldn't feel comfortable that I was in control, so now the itching idea that a 350 would have been better is gone and I feel the 500 is the perfect fit for me where it's 90% off road, 10% on road but really confident relative to the 350 when on that road - and a hell of a lot smoother too.

I moved back from the desert, and transitioned to woods riding. I am not giving up on my 4 strokes, cuz I still take trips to AZ/CA winters riding where 2 strokes arent ideal for distance, temp, elevation. I tough it out tight woods riding with my 4strokes to be able to enjoy the fast two track, sand dunes, part time dual sport in the Great Lakes area.

I bought a 300L because of this channel and I loved it. The problem is my wife loved it more and she took it so I bought the 2022 450RL. I was skeptical with all the obvious issues but I will say that I am very impressed with how it turned out. The G2 throttle tamer, yoshi exhaust, and JD Tuning tuner have really turned it into a smooth, predictable, comfortable ride. I know your second 450L had all the goodies and you still had issues but I will say that my 450RL is literally almost on par with my wife’s 300L and my daughters 250L in the slow technical stuff. I really have zero complaints and although I don’t think there is a true dual sport out there, my 450RL is as close as it gets. I live in the black hills where we have thousands of miles of trails as well as hard roads and highways. I ride single track, ATV and SXS trails, fire roads, hard roads as well as a 30 minute highway commute a few times a week with no real gripes. I’m not sure if the updated RL model is really that much better than the L model, but I can honestly say I cannot relate to your experiences with your 450L’s. I think the husky 350 is a great bike and I know the feeling of never really being satisfied with something all too well. It gets frustrating but eventually you get to a point where you just accept the sacrifice of certain details or just always run two bikes. I personally have not found a better “dual” sport than the 450RL.

Obviously it’s much cheaper and easier to get than the overpriced Vortex. Just my .02

RC you are spot on here. I have a CRF 450RL with sumo setup and dual setup, then also, a 450x that has the Tusk Sumo street legal kit on it. The RL is as close to a do-all as you can get for a 6'2" 220lb guy. If you are going slower in the trials that is where the 450x really shines. It feels like 1st is uber slow and 2nd is basically like the RL's 1st gear. I wish Honda made a "450RLX" as is the RL with the X gearing. that would be perfect for me.

Had KTM 350 EEXC-F, and even with 17" road tires (Anakee 3, kinda Supermoto tires) It doesn't like fast speeds. Sold it, got the FE501s instead. Love that one. Though the 350 is a Perfect bike for enduro type off road. I also do have a KTM 250 XC-W TPI (I could make that street legal where I live, but mostly I just trailer it) but on the road, I now mostly use the 501 (BTW I"m in UTah). Having 500 4-stroke and 250 2-stroke is perfect combo. the 2-strok so good on slow technical stuff (but this 250 is quick on faster trails). the 350 is good for off road, but the 501 makes it a bit of a bette road, and the bike is surprisingly super light, though not as light as the 250 XC-W. as for tire to use off road: IF you MOSTLY ride off-road (like I ride from my house to the trail a few miles0 I like the MIchelin AC10 or Kenda Trailmaster (Kenda a bit cheaper, Michelin last longer). For mostly road use I use the Dunlop 606 or Pirelli MT21. I also have a pair of Dunlop Geomax MX52 for my 250 (that one doesn't really go on road much at all) and I keep a set of 17" rims with michelin Anakee 3 for pure street riding and carbing down canyon roads. MOst time, I keep the AC10 on the bike for bit of road and mstly trail, I"ll put the rims from my 250 on the 501 if I"m going to trailer it to the place, or if I feel like carving in the Canyons the Anakee 3 is perfect, also the COntinental contiAttack SM are good. but I perfer the Anakee.

With a road legal bike there are more opportunities for me. I want a bike with more torque that still revs a bit. Ofcourse i would need to upgrade the suspension on this fe 350 but that's no big deal for me. Would you recommend the fe 350 for a rider like me?

I have ordered a new Voretex ECU but I don't think it'll arrive for about 7 more weeks though. When it does come in, I'll probably go with an FMF or Yoshi exhaust. However, the flame outs haven't really bothered me. I just use the clutch more. I'm pretty happy with mine. Perhaps my riding style and the areas I'm riding fits the 450 more than the places and riding styles of others. Just saying for me, its been nice.

  • @robh3267
    @robh32672 жыл бұрын

A dual sport bike is a compromise at best, modern 4 strokes work best for that purpose but just can't match the capabilities of a modern 2 stroke when you start riding more technical off road terrain, I've ridden modified 350's that can smoke a 500 but it's expensive and not just simple bolt on parts, most bolt on upgrades are for protection and comfort, performance upgrades weather it's engine or suspension that you can really feel usually require a bit more work than the simple bolt on, the problem with 4 strokes is they have so many more parts and are very expensive to repair and internal engine failures can make an engine not worth fixing, it sounds like you should consider having 2 bikes tailored for their intended purposes.

Ive had both a 2012 350 in Australia and a 2017 500 in Canada - loved them both, and when i owned each i kind of wanted to own the other. Its a bit of grass is greener on the other side but also do be smart - where do you want to make memories? On the road, in the woods, or in the desert? Pick the bike for that, put up with shitty performance in the others. In canada its a dillema still, as i ride woods in BC and Idaho, so i want a 350. But i go to california and mexico to ride where the 500 is right! This mental anguish will go on forever haha, the solution is probably a 450 (which they did in 2017 in canada!)

I had a KTM 525 years ago. A friend has a 450 from the same year. Though the bikes were almost exactly the same bike. The 450 was the nicer of the two off road. On road I don't think the 525 (really a 507) would have had anything to sacrifice the improved off road performance of the 450. So keep that in mind. A little bit of displacement change in the exact same motorcycle, engine cases and all, can had a remarkably deleterious effect on the overall feel of the bike. I can imagine going from a 350, which I have not ridden, to a 500 would be a major step backward in off road performance. Particularly on technical single track. Any DS rig that I have ever had was always a tire compromise. I don't have a DS rig anymore because of that. I either ride off road or I ride my supermoto or street bike on road.

Unicorns don't exist - although the 350/450/500 EXCF with a tuner is close. Tires is always an issue - good offroad tires aren't for the road. At some point most people end up with two or more bikes rather than chasing the unicorn.

I bought the 21 Rockstar Edition FE350 last year coming from MX 2strokes my entire life. Stock the FE350 is painfully slow to me but l thought that once l change to a Vortex and a FMF slip on it will be good enough. While it did make it more powerful l still had that voice in the back of my head saying "You should have bought the 501"... That voice ended up winning and l traded it for a 22 FE501. The 350 with the exhaust and Vortex was close to the stock 501 but still lacking. Lucky for me the FMF fits both bikes and l just sent the Vortex back to get remapped for the 501. While the 501 is now nice power wise, it still lacks the punch of a stock FC350.. I prefer riding more open trails, supermoto and MX type of stuff (l needed that license plate) the 501 still signs off way too early for me. l put it down to the throttle body being 2mm smaller, lower compression rate, milder cam and smaller ports. I plan on doing something about these things over time to make it a desert & Supermoto beast. Then it will be the bike that l want. I didn't want the heavier 701 as l wanted a MX type of base to work on. If Husqvarna made a FX501 that you could register in my country it would be the perfect bike (for me) in my opinion.... Anyone looking at getting a 350, ride the MX versions 1st and also try the 501. They feel very close handling wise (the 350 & 501) If you are doing nothing but trail riding try the 250 or 300 2 stroke for sure. If you love the 2 stroke hit buy a low mileage 250 carb model..
