Lesson Description:
If you've looked up song progressions before you've almost certainly seen sus chords with labels like sus2 and sus4. We tend to think of sus guitar chords as just another chord shape to learn. But historically suspended chords had a very specific function in music. In this short video I explain the theory and history of sus chords and how I recommend practicing them. This unique and alluring chord type is a powerful tool for expression and definitely worth adding to your chord vocabulary.

Sus guitar chords are so beautiful, they’re worth exploring and understanding deeply, that’s why I made this video. In this video I talk about sus2 and sus4 chords, how to play sus chords on the guitar, and how to use sus chords both in a modern sense and a traditional classical sense on the guitar. Sus chords explained this way should help you understand suspended chords historically and theoretically. Suspended guitar chords can be just the spice you were looking for in a chord progression so I hope you’ll enjoy practicing them in the two ways that I suggest in this video.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)
- Jared

One good example of Sus 2 chords is the song "Made me glad"by Miriam Webster. In the intro and the verse it's alternation between Eb and Ebsus2 and also between Bb and Bbsus2 in the key Bb.

Hey! I discovered you on tik tok the other day and I have to say that you're doing a really good job! I'm a beginner guitar player so these lessons are all I need. Also, the chords with color sheet has helped me so much both in improvisation and the comprehension of scales. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Thanks, Jared! This is great! I used to play 30+ years ago, at that time I was really good. I had strong hands and I played a lot of fingerstyle. But I stopped for many years. Though, I couldn't get the music out of my head, so I've tried to start back. Only now I have nerve impingement problems. The first was in my neck, after 3 vertebrae fused last December, I thought it was fixed. It took over 7 months of constant work to get the strength back so that i could even practice regularly w/o my left hand cramping up. Since July I've made amazing progress. This time, I'm learning so much theory (because of YT being available, like your videos). But I'm still having nerve impingement issues, now it's in left wrist & elbow, not sure why it's happening (but I'm getting OT). Anyway, thanks so much for explaining how suspended chords came about. That's something I can remember & work with! I have been a subscriber since I first discovered you. I really enjoy your videos!

The picture of the video made me laugh 😂 About the origin, didn't know and seems cool. And about the last melody, I love it. Definitely will practice it and add something related to some melancholy song for the future 🤠

Hi Jared, @4:20, when you list the sus2 chords in the key of C, why is there no E sus2 chord (and just a n/a written instead)? Thanks, your videos are top notch
