Old school documentarians that had the good sense to keep the rights to their shows are hitting a gold mine right now. The amount of old school things that would do so well on a platform like KZread, but are locked in the vaults of discovery or nat geo is bloody heart breaking.

Les is a real badass and runs a true survivor show. Not having a camera crew and having to film all on his own is hardcore enough. He also makes the show look very realistic instead of other survivor shows that feature the guy doing crazy dangerous stunts for the sake of the wow factor on camera. Les doesnt have time for that. He focuses on actual priorities in survival. This episode is my favorite. By far the most ideal place to survive of all the episodes ive seen. And that feast at the end looked absolutely amazing. Makes me wanna go to the South Pacific and camp out on an island there.

It may be hard to realize but it actually is really hard to get meat in survival situations. Imagine trying to get a fish without a net or a fishing rod and a constant supply of good bait. Every time he manages to catch something large I’m astounded because I know just how hard it can be. We don’t see him catch meat many times because he doesn’t fake the production and stick a dead rabbit or fish into his spear when not filming

@@danieltorrejon4303 Les has also talked in director's commentaries about the difficulty of hunting and filming at the same time. All of the moving around to set up cameras, talking to the camera, etc. basically alerts everything in the area to his presence. And, if he were to hunt without filming it and suddenly show up onscreen with meat, people would probably call it fake.

I had a snorkeling boat leave me about an hour off the coast of Mexico on a reef. Fortunately they turned around after about half an hour. Not fun. When I finally saw the boat again I pissed myself in relief. Totally uncontrollable and I'm sure I'd have shat myself too if I hadn't before we left. I thought I was dead. And not just dead but that I'd endure physical and mental torture before death. Of course the mental had set in immediately upon raising my head and realizing the boat was leaving me. The Magnum PI episode where he was lost at sea really screwed me up as a kid. It took me a long time to get over my fear of the ocean. And then that happened. Haven't been back in the ocean 25 years later.

The additional footage was in the original airing on Discovery, but I think they cut those scenes out of the reruns to shorten the run time when they moved to Science channel.

@BadDriversOfTennessee in reruns yes they do. The premieres generally have all of the footage together. Perfect example is in the Kalahari episode. The scene where Les discusses the importance of staying hydrated was in the original premiere (I saw it at the time), but was cut down in later reruns (likely for Science Channel syndication).

Also, there's many comments saying "this is my favorite episode as a kid" that are making this 50 year old feel like he needs to be in the rest home, haha!! But seriously, this episode is one of my favorites along with the Baffin Island and Labrador ones!

I noticed the the bone necklace around Les' neck. I'm guessing it was a gift from the survival expert that helped Les before making this episode, from one survival expert to another. As well as to bring good fortune during the seven days having to survive. I can only imagine how surreal it must feel to be alone and documenting each survival experience, especially this one. I'd love to see a directors commentary on this particular episode.
