So many of these twists had one central problem for me: They punished players for COMPETING - in a challenge, by finding an idol, etc. We want to watch the players who show up to play actually succeed or at least go out trying. Not have their game then come down to chance or have their game be exposed by a stupid phrase.

This season suffered from a really bad winners edit in my opinion. I think Erika played a better game than the show runners showed and if they had restructured some of the episodes with BTS footage you can find online (not to mention everything they get that we don’t see) people wouldn’t be so upset. However I also will agree that I don’t understand why the jury hated Xander’s game so much, he did very well and I think he’s only a few mistakes away from the win near the end, but that’s too many mistakes sometimes.

I think Xander did nothing after the fake idol thing. He never initiated any vote out, he never protected anyone from being voted out, he was just a number floating by, and I think the jury didn’t appreciate it. We absolutely needed that Erika/Heather relationship to be established. It's the most important one of the season, as both of them make it to final 4 and had a lot of power in the game, so it's baffling that we don't get to see the inception of it. We're just randomly told that Heather and Erika are a duo out of nowhere and from that point on they're a duo I guess. My hypothesis is that they wanted to separate Erika's game from Heather but there must've been a better way than just shafting both of them for no reason. Cut some of that garbage in episode 3 that ends up mattering not at all and show Heather and Erika bond and form an alliance or something instead. We don't need like 20 minutes dedicated to advantages that go nowhere and players that are fairly early out.

Jeff/Production tried SO hard to mess up this season. They took an incredibly solid cast and bogged them down early with crazy advantages and twists. LUCKILY this cast was so good at playing the game they really nullified the damage that could’ve been done. I hope production sees that a season can and should be driven by its cast and their relationships. That’s what makes the “social experiment” work so well. It’s the reason 70 million people watched the Borneo finale, and it’s the reason the show can still be so gripping 41 seasons in! We should pay attention to how different people play the game, not the game itself. This cast delivered and I can’t think of a season with more genuine emotion throughout in a long time. Some elements really need tweaking, and some things need to go in the garbage. But hopefully 41&42 are just the growing pains of finding out what the next 10 years of Survivor are all about!

He also never had a sob story or felt sorry for himself even though he was the most disadvantaged. All those black players were successful one was a medical student the other was a NFL player. Evvie was a complete moron and had so many double standards. Ricard was literally a snake. He was referring to other players as guys. It was racist because the black players used their race for a reason to have an alliance. The so called survivors cried in every episode. The constant complaining and saying how bad America is, does any of them move to another country. I don't see the blacks running back to Africa. Also hearing a Philipino women crying about growing up in Canada. Her parents and grandparents never went to residential schools. She was never taken from her parents and put in residential school or foster care. I'm tired of weak people crying about nothing and feeling sorry for themselves. Crying is a sign of weakness a man should never cry.

Here's a way I just thought of to make the hourglass twist work: still have the two teams of 5 with 2 people unpicked at the merge. The team that wins gets to skip tribal council completely, and they pick one person to go with them. The other person gets sent to exile island, where they choose if they want to join the group of 6 who avoids tribal completely, or join the group of 5 going to tribal, only they get immunity and can't be voted out. It still gives a lot of power to the person on exile, but there is no obvious choice for what to do like before. Erika could have chosen to stick with her old tribe + Ricard in an attempt to not make any early enemies, or try and help Heather survive a vote with Yase + Shan.

I actually had many many problems with this season..... first is right from the start Jeff Probst when Jeff states that is gong to be like "old time Survivor" then....... proceed to be everything old survivor was not...... multiple idols, multiple twists, exile island, only 26 day, spoon fed lines from Jeff and no rice..... all of these did not occur in the early seasons. Survivor is no longer a social experiment and survivor show where they would integrate the culture for the location they are in, they are more a entertainment show with the producers throwing as much sand in the gears (as the viewers will allow) to see what crazy voting scenarios would occur. Frankly they could just do this show somewhere in the desert just outside Los Angeles and achieve the same result the way it is produced now. The last couple years you can tell they are getting cheaper and cheaper with staying only on Fiji to combining more and more reward/immunity challenges to now the reduction in days on the island.

I think if they spend ANY amount of time developing Heather/Erika relationship the outcome is much easier to understand. I shouldn’t have to read the cast interviews to understand that Erika did a lot of UTR work with the underdog alliance and the cast thought Erika was savvy and dangerous. Also, if you read them, you knew going into the finale that no one on jury respected Xander’s game. The writing was on the wall for him to be a 0 vote finalist. It makes me frustrated that the few modern female winners we have are so often underedited to tell the story of why their fellow finalists lost, rather than how they won.

I think Jeff Probst and Production did a disservice to an outstanding cast and a deserving winner. Probst was about an 11 on the season's insufferability index and the number and scope of the twists/advantages in my opinion detracted from my enjoyment of the game and nearly stifled the gameplay and strategy that was occurring organically from the cast. Not to keep harping on Jeff Probst, but the self-congratulatory tone in which he touted the "great social experiment" of Survivor at any and every opportunity was obnoxious. As much as I liked Xander he torpedoed his game at the final 4 tribal council by attempting to tell the jury what they were thinking. Erika had an outstanding FTC and articulated her gameplay expertly (I would also say that with the exception of one momentary pause Xander also performed well at FTC). I am happy with Erika as the winner but I think Probst/production overcooked Season 41, akin to overdoing a steak by smothering it with sauces and embellishments. Let it breathe.

YOUR opinion on who they should’ve voted for is irrelevant because you weren’t there on the island with them 😂 you only see a few hours of a month long experience. There’s no such things as an incorrect vote.

I think the cast this season was great. So many players were determined to play and win!! I agree the twists went overboard and took away from the greatness of the cast. I also wish they had kept the 39 days because it did feel rushed. As far as editing, the season started off like we’re going to see behind the scenes throughout, but it only lasted for like 2 episodes.

I had a problem with rewarding the person who was voted to Exile Island with the game-changing time clock, reversing the outcome of the challenge. This season is definitely in my bottom half. I just never got into it. It was great having such a diverse cast, but I didn't find any of them likeable enough to root for. All the twists and advantages took away from the game in a big way; it was more like a scavenger hunt than a social game. The hourglass twist was the worst; how can they penalize people for winning a challenge? It also rubbed me the wrong way that only because of the hourglass was Erika able to stay in the game and eventually win; to me it was slightly reminiscent of Chris Underwood's win. Finally, Erika was given a horrible edit; by the end of any season the winner should be somewhat obvious to the viewers. The whole time I was thinking that Erika and Heather would be a dream to take to the final 3. When the final 3 was revealed I honestly thought Erika had no chance, and it was between DeShawn and Xander. I only started to realize that Erika had a chance as the jury questioned the finalists. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention all season, but I would bet that most viewers were surprised by the final vote.

I think that this review is really fair. I would probably add a comment about how well the season was shot! Everything looked so beautiful and impressive and larger than life. Great kudos for that. What Jeff Probst doesn't seem to understand is that these overly complicated twists and advantages are not necessary for the success of the game or the show. This cast definitely proved that. All you need is good casting. I mean... I know squat about producing Survivor, so what do I know? What I do know is I've been watching Survivor from the first episode in January 2021 (I'm at season 32 now) and watching the first seasons - they're still as interesting, colourful and addictive as it's all about the people! I think this season, like a lot of first-seasons-of-a-new-era was good for that. I am curious to see what 42 is going to be like as the players there hadn't seen 41 and wouldn't know what to expect. Hopefully that 42 production would have improved on 41. Survivor 43 will definitely be a different ballgame!

Then we it got good again only to be let us down time and time again with way to many rewards, twists that really had no resolve or reason. By the end I was just disappointed. I know they want to fool us into a fake winner but honestly they ignored Erica so much with almost zero confessionals that’s when she won I was just left scratching my head. I still don’t understand what happened. They need to at least give the eventual winner a storyline and not just some weird plot twist that didn’t really change anything. I’m not sure I still understand Erica’s rewind. I love Survivor, I just need a little more suspense and clarification, this season just left me confused.

It's been about 15 years since I watched Survivor. My last official season was Season 11 with Dani Boatwright as the winner. (I vaguely remember Redemption Island, but that's about it.) This season was great. I liked the cast, I liked their dynamics. I liked the fact that despite a few players acting a bit edgy, there wasn't really a villain this season. The social dynamics amongst the crew were great. There wasn't a Sugar or Russel this season. Everyone got along surprisingly well and I appreciated that. Especially with an all newbie cast. This was my first time really diving into the world of advantages, and frankly, I only vaguely remember hidden idols. But while there were a couple of episodes where they overshadowed everything else, this felt mostly like a social game. I liked that. I'll be back to watch next season.

I will stand by my Do or Die idea: Death Plinko. 1) it's more visually interesting than Jeff and a player have a lil conversation in front of boxes 2) there's potential for the rest of the players to get involved - have them place (depending on their numbers) safe or death spaces. Players like Xander or Chochran know about the bell curve of probability and can use that knowledge to their benefit strategically. Edit: yes I agree that Do or Die isn’t the greatest - I’d rather have it be a play-or-get-food option like in the past, but you’ve gotta admit Death Plinko would just be cool as hell.

Erika played a game that reminded me of Tina and T-Bird and honestly Sandra minus the confrontation. It wasn't luck that she got no pushback after the merge, it was the result of strategy that unfortunately we weren't shown much of because other tribes kept losing pre-merge. She's also a POC Canadian woman, the first, to win this game with incredibly steep and enthusiastic competition. The best way to try and fix the hourglass twist is to make it where there are consequences if it breaks. It was basically “break this and you are safe” there was nothing to stop it. But if you make it where they lose their vote for 2 or 3 votes if they break it or they are already safe and they can just change who is on the chopping block by hitting the hourglass, I think that could make it a bit better. Make it where there is a question as to if it will be broken instead of an obvious choice of breaking the hourglass.

Basically, we shouldn't expect to see any of our favorite players from any season back for a while. :( Here's to hoping Jeff changes his mind in the future once a few more seasons have been produced. Xander's loss (and Lauren's in Ghost Island) shows how Survivor juries have evolved over the years (I think due to changes in casting). In the first 20+ seasons it was completely unimaginable for someone to be the sole survivor of a decimated tribe, make it to the jury, and then lose without getting a single vote. In older seasons of Survivor if you made it to the end as part of a losing/pagonged tribe you automatically won no matter what kind of a game you played (assuming you weren't sitting next to other members of your former tribe). But that's just not the case anymore.

I think this is one of those seasons where its a debate on how to edit: should they tell the story of the season or the story of the winner. Usually those stories are the same story but occasionally, which we've seen in a few seasons, the winner is more in the background of the story of the season. Usually when that happens its because of one specific player so its about "why Russell lost" but sometimes it's not one specific player eating up the story but just that everybody else is driving what is going on more.

@@noahs5636 totally agree, the astroturf one was so much easier to work into conversation.

@@airhawkey exactly. If someone like Brad got that one you could just pass it off as a silly country saying.

Thank you for posting the video. I would place this season of "Survivor" middle tier? 🤔

26 days leaves less interactions between people per vote out, making it more about gameplay. i am not at all against gameplay content, but it doesn't feel like a social experiment the less social drama there is. i hope they go back to 39 days soon. i give the season a 6.5. i like twists to shake up dominant alliance meta, but i also like the pace better of a less hurried season. everyone was playing the game hard, and it's hard to relate to the show when there is little small talk to see what's troubling people. also, the punishment of losing challenges made it like the haves and have nots in survivor fiji, where the first winning tribe dominated everything from the first challenge. that's the main reason erica got a weak edit: one-sided tribe dominance.

I loved this season, because instead of having a lot of people who I hated and who didn't like each other, I felt sad when a lot of people post-merge went home, and the cast seemed to as well. Ya, there were too many twists, but I'm okay with experimenting with their formula.

Im ok with any winner tbh , like this is a really smart and good cast , if Heather won Id have a case for her. But Really wanted Xander to win cause the last Himbo that won Survivor was Fabio and that was ages ago ..

Only thing I have to say about the Shan vote is it feels easy because as she said she was out all day which makes a blindside easy if someone else can’t find out about it.

It was my first season I watched live after coming back into the Survivor fold after season 40 finished up, and I LOVED watching it! The hype of seeing it air and getting a first look at the new Survivor era really made me happy. Given that, I do disagree majorly with the pre-merge advantages, as the post-merge showed us what it could have been like without them (and it was much better IMO.) I also think if they were to remove the bulk of these random twists and spent time building up the castaways more (not just the one's relevant to the story) it would fix a lot of the grips I have with the editing too

Definitely this season was in the middle. I understand why Erika won but I definitely thought Xander should of got 1 or 2 votes. I definitely agree with you on all the advantages they had. One of my favorite people was broccoli brad so I hope he comes back for sure, definitely made me happy

The moment when they got rid of Ricard and she got the first confession after it, I called it that she’ll win simply how she talked about her gameplay.

Yeah, she definitely was much better at marketing herself than the other two. I personally think Xander played a slightly better game than Erika, but still, could see the votes going either way going into final three. However, when Xander pretty much avoided talking about what he did in the game, I had a feeling he'd lost. Part of the game is knowing how to market youself to jury, and he did a very poor job on that end.
