Surviving Oral Cancer - Melissa's Story

Many Heartland Dental supported doctors include oral cancer screenings as part of their regular oral care. As #OralCancerAwarenessMonth comes to a close, we are sharing the story of how impactful these screenings can be through the eyes of Melissa, a patient at Tillery Family Dental. Thank you Dr. Tillery and Courtney and thank you Melissa for sharing your story.

I just had a tongue biopsy - no one told me how incredibly painful it would be for weeks afterwards. But, like you, I have an amazing dentist. So grateful you got the help you needed and are healed !!!

I just had a tongue biopsy about 2 weeks ago as well, and I agree with you that it is extremely sore when they put the needle into your tongue to freeze it.. It was horrible and so sore as they did it 3 times the worst experience I have had with pain, then they cut a chunk out in the middle of my tongue, then stiched it up. It was sore for about a day or 2, then OK, but I had nystatin and a spray to use 4x daily. My stitches never dissolved but came out after 2 weeks when I are sonething I am still waiting on my results that they said could take up to 8-12 weeks. I'm nervous and scared, but what will be will be 😢 I'm Staying positive 🙏

Plus I also have chronic TMD and can only hold my mouth open for about two minutes without pain By the time he stitched it, I was going nuts. I wanted to yank him out of my mouth! The stitches were so long! It was more like surgery not a biopsy! 😢

My hygienist looks with a light all around my mouth, not only under or at the sides of my tongue. Oral cancer can be anywhere in the mouth, though it’s usually found on the sides of the tongue or under it.

What grey lines? What did they look like. No one has helped me or done a biopsy. I need one.

Those with oral cancer: were any of you smokers only in your 20s/teens?

Yes, but that’s not what caused my cancer. I quit when I was 21 (started at 16), and my cancer was diagnosed when I was 27. In My case (and in some other woman with the same circumstances), I believe my pregnancy triggered my cancer. The change in my hormones. My cancer came out while I was pregnant with my son. Why it came back in 2020, that’s a good question. Again could be hormone related (menopause). But it’s just all too coincidental for me.
