Welcome to the official KZread channel of Nikol Johnson!💄
My Channel empowers women to show up, be BOLD, FIERCE, and Unapologetic. I talk a lot about this in my book Beauty Reinvented, available through Amazon! It's not just about going gray young it's about a powerful movement for women breaking out and having NO BEAUTY RULES.
➡️ None of what I show on this channel is what “mainstream” KZread makeup tutorials will show you. Instead of telling you to put loads of makeup on (that makes you look like a different person), I want to show you how to “reveal” the beauty that you already have and teach you how to look GREAT- while still looking like YOURSELF.
As the years go by, many women feel that their beauty and radiance go by too. I don’t believe this. I believe you can stay beautiful, confident, and feel fabulous even if you’re past 40, 70, 80, or 100 years of age.
➡️ No matter your background or your age, my goal is to help you on your journey. Whether through make-up/skin-care tutorials, product reviews, or health/wellness advice. I want to empower (and teach) women to show up, be BOLD, FIERCE, and unapologetic.
Are you ready to embrace your authentic self- and start making YOUR OWN BEAUTY RULES? Subscribe to my channel NOW! 🔔

I am a retired optometrist and one thing I used to tell all my patients who use eye makeup: it belongs on the OUTSIDE of the eye, not INSIDE! The area between your lash line and the ocular surface is actually INSIDE the eye. Most of the everyday moisture in our eyes comes from glands that line the inside of both upper and lower lids; these are the meibomian glands and their ducts line the edges of the lids. Putting eyeliner on this area is asking for trouble, because it can clog and stop the moisture flow into the eye. If you could see your own eyelids under high magnification like eye doctors do, you would never even think of putting eye makeup there. The ducts can clog, the moisture trying to get out of the glands carries the makeup into the tear film, where it can become embedded on the inside surfaces of the lids. The inflammatory response to this is poor eye lubrication, causing redness and dry eye irritation and pain. Over time, the damage to the glands is irreversible. Two rules: (1) keep your makeup on the outside of the eyes, and (2) thoroughly clean all eye makeup every night. I will add one more, that if you are not going out, don't wear your eye makeup at all that day. Give your eyelids a complete break that day.

As someone who had clogged meibomian glands so bad that some of my glands actually died off, I caution women about applying any kind of product to their "waterlines" (a beauty term and not an optician term). In my case, mine were so badly clogged, that I had to have a treatment to express them (to the tune of $950 out of pocket as my insurance didn't cover the procedure) and I am on lifetime Rx eye drops for dry eye that cost $600/mo. These glands are very delicate, hard to clean, and produce a crucial portion of the tears that bathe the cornea and keep it from drying out. It's also important to note that once the individual glands die off, they do not come back. Think long and hard, my friends.

THANK YOU! I am 65 and have pretty good skin, thanks to my mom's great genes. I have taken care of my skin forever and then I tried this effect and stopped to read your comment and decided not to go there again. If the make-up doesn't clog those pores, it's a great trick. However, I think I will stear clear of it.

Also, the membranes of your "waterline" are extremely delicate and porous. They will absorb whatever chemicals are in your eye makeup into your body. Make sure that you vet the ingredients in your cosmetics. Since cosmetics are not food products, the FDA has little - if any- regulatory oversight over make-up products even though the chemicals will be directly absorbed into our bodies transdermally.

I would occasionally (couple times a year I rarely wear makeup) put eyeliner on my upper waterline and will admit it really does give a good effect. A few years ago my eyes started watering so badly I looked like I was crying all the time. My eye doctor prescribed drops and steaming my eyes every night. It’s a pain in the butt to have to make sure I’m always carrying drops and take eight minutes with a (hot as you can stand according to the doc) hand towel over my eyes.

As a 73-year-old woman who has developed dry eyes, I think it's a very bad idea to tight line eyelashes. I've seen videos where eye doctors find eye make up embedded in the inside upper lid on women who are having eye problems from years of wearing eye makeup. We don't really think about these things until we start to have some eye pain and realize beauty means nothing if your eyes aren't healthy. Apparently our eyes can only take so much make up over our lifetimes. I'm just saying: be careful. The glands in your eyelids can get clogged and actually die. You can't get new glands, so be careful about contacts and makeup when you're young! I wear minimal eye makeup now. Hate to rain on anyone's parade, but take care of your eyes!

I agree to a certain extent, but where you see severe cases of eyelash follicle infection, is where they haven't cleansed the eyeliner or mascara off properly. To really get in there, you have to use a cotton bud, with eye make-up remover and ensure there is not trace of make-up there in between the eyelashes, then, put on an eyelash serum or castor oil (with a cotton bud).

So many women simply do not take time to clean the cosmetics they wore all day off throughly EVERY night! And for those who were foolish enough to leave their contacts in all night, there are no words know enough to address that stupidity! I wore everything ! Lashes, liquid liner, blue lower lid liner, several layers f mascara on upper and lower lashes, and three shadows everyday since I was in ninth grade! Every night tissues an baby oil were put to work getting everything off throughly! At 80 years old, I am proud to say, so far, no extra eye problems yet! Fake lashes should be cleaned regularly too, not worn day after day ! Baby oil is a miracle product for me!

I've seen optometrists warn against using products on that part of the under eyelid. Something about clogging sensitive glands. Anyone with dryness or other eye issues should check this out before trying. It sure looks great, but if it causes redness, swelling, or vision issues, it isn't worth it.

When I was in my younger years, I would say up until I turned 40, I colored in my upper and lower waterlines -- but when I drew closer to my 50s, I began having problems with my eyes, and dry eye syndrome. I would feel like I had sand or grit under my eyelids and my eyes would burn all day long and have redness. I hadn't changed to use a new product line and had been using the same manufacturer of eyeliner my whole life. So I changed eyeliner manufacturers but still experienced the burning, redness, and feeling like I had sand or grit under my eyelids all throughout the day. So, I just stopped using any eyeliner on the insides of my waterlines -- and as soon as I stopped the health of my eyes improved and I didn't feel the burning and the grit under my eyelids anymore! When it comes to choosing your health over vanity, you should always choose your health! I still use eyeliner but only on the outside of my lashes. If my eyes don't look as "dramatic" anymore, oh well, I'll just live with it !! I'd rather have healthy eyes and keep my vision for as long as I possibly can! .

Using products on your inner lid margins is not a good idea, it blocks the little openings of the meibomium glands and results in blockages which lead to chalazia (styles) and blepharitis, also upsetting the balance of your tear film. Good lid hygiene is really important to prevent the symptoms of dry eye disease. Keeping those little openings clear is vital, it’s best not to gum them up with product.

I had an eye infection many years ago, however, and the ophthalmologist I saw told me that the product doesn't STAY ON my eye, but rather goes IN my eye. After that terrible night of feeling the infection in my eye that caused me to not sleep, I discontinued this beauty practice, and I have not had another medical issue since. So, I do not recommend doing this, despite the fact that it DOES look lovely.

Eye Shadow only in the corner or my eyes and not the whole eyelid! And, using my eyeliner pencil only on the top innermost part of my eyelashes! I hope I'm describing it right. But, what a great revelation! And, mascara? I've been hesitant to use too much on my lashes so it ends up clumped and I end up having to brush it off. I have had no success with mascara as I aged. When you explained your trick of using the movement of the eyelid closing to stroke the brush, it completely changed the game for me. Now I can finally get mascara on the lashes, and can’t wait to try your mascara as well. Thank you so much for the education you offer to elder women using well developed techniques so clearly explained. Many of us grew up in an era when makeup was forbidden or considered whoreish. We woman have to lift each other up, and you do a fabulous job! Thanks so much!

I started tight-lining in my thirties, too. When I started, I used black to match my mascara. As I got older, I switched to dark grey or black-brown for a softer look. I find that matching it to the tone of my mascara really enhances the eye and lash line but I use so little it doesn't compete with the liner above the lash line.

Having been ill for almost a year the doctors have finally come up with a treatment and I am feeling more like my old self. I haven't put on make up for so long that I feel as if I am starting over. I stumbled across your channel and I am pleased to see a woman who isn't 30, although you look marvelous my dear, showing us makeup tricks for older women. You gave me some great tips and I feel like I can put makeup on and not feel like I'm caking it on. I took your advice, paused you, got up and looked in the mirror and the skin below my lash line is very light and shows all along the upper eyelid. No wonder my adding eyeliner always looked incomplete or badly applied. I have all this white skin below my lashes that made it look out of place. I read one of the comments below about not putting makeup there for fear of causing chalazia (styes) and blepharitis but it doesn't concern me. Blepharitis is from having too much bacteria in and around your lashes and I use a cotton ball and warm water and a touch of baby shampoo on the cotton ball and shampoo my eyelashes a few times a week. Then use my face cloth to rinse and remove the baby shampoo. I've had styes occasionally over the years as a result of having to wear make-up every day for work and I was frustrated because I had a stye form right before a very important engagement and I got angry and took care of it my way and I discovered a very quick fix if a brief pain doesn't bother you that I will not recommend because it horrifies my doctor and is not doctor approved. Now the question is do I apply eyeliner all along the eye since my skin is visible all along the lash line or just from the middle to the end point?

I almost never wear make-up, only for special occasions and this is a great way to look put together that doesn't take an hour to complete. Thanks for this.

I'm just at the start of my "middle aged" phase but I'm very bad at makeup and barely wear any. I no longer bother with mascara unless it's a very big event, and I learned that I can use my eyebrow brush and the darker of the eyebrow powder duo to softly "line" my eyes. It's just a touch darker than the powder I use on my brows, and gives a soft definition that barely looks like liner. It's so forgiving and looks less made up.

It doesn't matter how much make-up you put on your skin if the "canvas" isn't prepared. I believe the first thing women need is an excellent skin care treatment, If we don't have that we look "made-up". After the skin is prepared, primer is essential. If you don't believe it, I always recommend doing one side with primer and one side without - the difference is dramatic. :)

Hi, yes, I have known about this trick. It looks amazing but I’ve found it irritating and also exacerbates formation of stys for me. I’ll use it for special occasions only. So here’s MY trick for that fleshy color showing under the lashes - for a really natural look use less eye darkening eye products and instead disguise flesh and pinkness around the eyes (both above and below the lash line) with a soft blush. It’s kind of like if you can’t beat it - join it. Ha ha. I’m serious though, if you use less contrasting color and just continue the flesh tone up above the eyelid it will overshadow the weird under lash effect. Not for people who want a lot of eye drama though. Instead, it produces a soft, pleasant appearance to aging eyes.

I learned to do this decades ago. My lid line is easy to see - so I started filling it in and in between the lashes. It makes a world of difference.

I am 64, recently started using dry black eye shadow across lids like a liner, stays on pretty well, doesn't move around like liner. Mac has a great black shadow called Carbon but it broke so I grabbed an older palette with black. best eye liner I ever used, all by accident.

I have droopy eyelids, so I use very little eyeliner because it goes in the crease of my eye within the hour, i use a tissue to wipe it off during the course of the day, I started using eyeliner just the way you demonstrated inside the lid, it works good but I feel my eyes do not have that dramatic look from not applying eyeliner on the outside of my lid. This is what happens when you become middle aged.

Nikol makes great eye liners that are waterproof. So, no smearing or moving throughout the day, for me anyway. You can move it a little with a brush right after you apply it, but it does set up. Very nice liners. 😊

❤ I've be doing that tick for years. Thanks for tutorial. Even though this technique addresses the problem. It is not a good idea to do it because it can clog tear ducts and cause other eye issues. Also if your eyes water the liner runs to your inner eye crease and your constantly wiping it out. It could clog tear duct there. I still do it because I like the look I've had no other issues. Its a personal choice and ladies should proceed with caution.😊

I've enjoyed wearing eye shadow and eyeliner in my younger days, though at sixty I've not been for the past fifteen years due to particular jobs and such. I love eye shadow and eye liner! I have to admit while watching this video, when Nikol began to apply the liner to this area, 'waterlines' I was put off and squeamish just as I was in my younger days seeing this on my classmates or anyone for that matter. I used think -why? I did not realize this could cause this kind of damage to 'meibomian glands'. Never knew about this. Thanks for posting your comments. Nikol -you do look fabulous!

I didn’t wear eyeliner in general until my 40s. Prior to that, I felt eyeliner made my naturally long lashes look fake. But, our eyes disappear as we get older. I always hugged the lash line as I have hooded lids. I finally tried tightlining the waterline about 2 years ago. Makes a definite difference.
