Surviving on Minimum Wage | IN Close

Seattle has voted to boost its minimum wage to $15 an hour over time. The first increase takes the minimum wage to $11 an hour. But is that enough to live on in this expensive city? We profile a young barista, a temporary worker and a grocery store clerk to drill down into what it takes to stretch minimum wage to a living wage, especially with housing taking such a big chunk out of the budget. We also interview a UW professor who has created an alternative to the federal minimum wage that is more realistic and the head of a company that has already boosted its minimum wage to $15.
IN Close airs Thursdays at 7pm on KCTS 9.

Most Americans find it hard to retire comfortably amid economy downtrend. Some have close to nothing going into retirement, my question is, will you pay off mortgage as a near-retiree, or spread money for cashflow, to afford lifestyle after retirement?

I wholeheartedly concur; I'm 60 years old, just retired, and have about $1,250,000 in non-retirement assets. Compared to the whole value of my portfolio during the last three years, I have no debt and a very little amount of money in retirement accounts. To be completely honest, the information provided by invt-advisors can only be ignored but not neglected. Simply undertake research to choose a trustworthy one.

Joey'sEvilTwin Yeah, but for some of us, it took more loads (squirts) than other people, and it may have taken more loads to make our brothers and sisters and parents. I have liked to joke around with people about it in my past. I made a comment to a woman about it to a woman in my past who's husband wouldn't give her a divorce, who made lots of money at the time in another country. She wanted me to do her and I said no because she said although her husband would NEVER give her a divorce, she said he was very dangerous if he ever caught her with another man.. So anyway, I just joked with her about how many squirts it took to make each of her 3 children. And, she actually told me what she remembered. Please remember though, if anybody ever gives you a hard time for no reason, just tell them they are no more important than you are because their parents had sex just like your parents did, and that they came from a squirt or a load, just like you did. They are so lost for words that they don't know how to reply. Haha. Take care and thanks for responding.

I think you said it perfectly. People tend to live within their means. Meaning, people spend just as much as they make even after getting a raise or a better job. People , including I, need to learn to not spend more even though you can. Rather, save up that money so you may invest into your future.

@@kawazaki23 Software engineering is a great job, $70k+ a year in salary, great benefits, and very stable. The world runs on tech, engineers are her to stay! lol. Plus, in this time of covid, when many people are forced to go into the office or loose their jobs, I'm able to work from home safely. I have tons of flexibility on when I want to start my work and when I want to end. I use to go to the gym at 5 am but since gyms are closed, I sleep in because I don't have to worry about having to drive into the office. During lunch, I go for a long walk or workout and it's easy to do working from home. Plus, many tech companies in general are adopting to work from home even after the covid prob is over so many software engineers will be able to stay at home, which gives more flexibility to do what we want to do. I went to school for it, I started as an architecture major but switched right when the tech crazy was starting with mobile phones and I'm so glad I did. BU twith the internet, you can learn to program from home for free, there are tons of tutorials out there. Plus, one of the big perks of software engineering is you can create your own applications and sell them for money. I also create mobile apps on the side to earn extra money from, hoping one day to make it big with that and not have to work for a company. lol

+awarebrah It's honestly so frustrating for younger generations such as myself who will find themselves fending for themselves in a few years. My family is by no means "wealthy", but I still understand that this world is never fair, and you don't get anywhere by hating those who were born with silver spoons in their mouth. With that said, people in situations such as these, I just feel like they lack that same mentality. Everything in this world trickles down to capitalist ideals and those who work the hardest can POTENTIALLY gain the most, and then you have the negative side of capitalism where corruption and greed can rule a modern society. Yet, by no means does that corruption or greed stop people from putting themselves in better situations. It might make it more difficult, but anything is possible. Unfortunately, there's not an instant change to such a negative and dependent mentality and the fact that there's a very good chance I will join much of the population that has to pay for those in lesser situations whom don't always act responsibly once they get that assistance is beyond fucking annoying.

Holy shit, $11 an hour? Damn, ditch the house and share a 1-bedroom apartment with someone else. I mean... holy hell. And the food she's buying is beyond name brand-- it's the expensive stuff. That cereal is at least $4.00 where I live, and no doubt it's at least $2 more in Seattle. I can tell from the packaging of the bread that it's either Udi's or Rudi's, so she's gluten-free. Ditch the bread and buy some other food with with that $6.00-7.00 dollars! And oranges are classed by the USDA as one of the most expensive fruits you can buy, and those looked like mandarins, even, which are more expensive to fill up on. Sheesh, buy apples and bananas instead. Those razors looked pretty nice, too. Get the bargain ones to save money. I could buy a lot with $70 a week for food, even in Seattle.

  • @milktea4270

GhoulishGal Same. I think the $2,200 was actually the rent for the house she was living in, with two or three other people splitting the cost with her, which comes out to be around $550-700 for each person. I did a quick apartment search for 1-bedroom apartments in Seattle, and while they're pricey, I found a several that were no more than $900. She could at least rent one of those with another person and her rent would be cut down by $100 or more if there are other apartments that have a smaller rent (doubt it). Or, or, or, she could just not live right in Seattle. In fact, since she doesn't have much, she could probably move to just outside Seattle, where rent for 1-bedrooms will be even cheaper. She could also put the money for that bread towards something cheaper and more sustainable, like eggs. I'd gladly take a $3.80 dozen eggs over a small loaf of $7.00 bread.

But everything got so expensive. Gas, food, electric en heat, insurances. If this keeps going, alot of people are gonna get in big problems.

Exactly, I dropped out of college because it was teaching me nothing more than to get a job and work for someone else making their dreams come true all the while putting me through debt. I taught myself how to code and landed a six figure tech job with stock options in San Francisco. I then taught myself how to trade binary options/Stocks on the side so I could quit my job and work for myself full time. It's all about how hard are you willing to hustle in the beginning.

Going to art school was the best thing for me. Art school is awesome. I don't care what nobody say. I learned cool things and went to fun places and camping in the woods creating baskets from the tree I cut. Many people keep saying stay at home to learn art, but there are a lot of thing you don't learn at home that are taught at school. There are some techniques that take longer online or to learn on your own, but I learn faster, short and better techniques I learned from professionals who currently work in the industry. Connections are really important and you can't that being at home. I know some of the top and big people in the animation industry and some happen to my friends that I talk to every once in the while. Being at one of the top art school for animation has taught me a lot. I learned a lot from taking philosophy, science art history etc classes. My art skills has also branch out as well. There were things I never knew I could do that I enjoy doing. Going to art school has taught me to take risk as a creative artist and take it to the next level. I have the knowledge to create films by the industry standards. You can't learn by industry standards on something at home. Even though I just finished the animation industry, I have one more semester to go to get my degree in filmmaking. I am currently planning my internship at an animation studio in Tokyo, Japan for experience and all studios there only hire those with a college degree or some kind of certification showing that you learned something somewhere. f I did't go to art school, I probably wouldn't be closer to my goal being an animator and working at an industry/freelancing. Skilled artist can make a lot of money especially in Hollywood working on blockbuster motion picture film or animation. Hollywood needs the artist because it's the artist that makes the films look awesome and good. Hollywood are good at making film especially the sci-fi, action and fantasy genre because the artist are the ones that brings the imagination and the world of fantasy to life. There are more artist in the movie credits than anything. If one is serious about art and wants to make a living doing art and have a passion for art, than art school is for those people and they should go! If art is only a hobby, than those people can stay home and perfect their art by learning off the internet and it will take longer to get a job. Someone who has a degree in whatever art like animation who went to school and got an education with and really good portfolio will be pick over the person who doesn't have a degree in animation, didn't go to school with a good portfolio. I hear people say this a lot and its true.

"Minimum Wage" was NEVER intended to be a "family wage", if you start a family prior to being financially secure you are in for a struggle, that is not the "system's" fault. People often loosely throw around the term "unplanned pregnancy" which really means two adults who are to irresponsible to use birth control and now want others to pay their way( typically for a lifetime).

That's an absolute lie. When Roosevelt created minimum wage he said: It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living.

@@Preservestlandry LOL, a quote from nearly a century is all you have to offer. The free capitalist market determines what wages are going to be paid for a particular job task. Typically the simpler the task the lower the wage. This is nearly always the case, for instance the more skilled and experienced a worker the higher their pay.

  • @RM-xr8lq
    @RM-xr8lq2 жыл бұрын

i think that if society requires these low skilled workers and positions, then those jobs should not be seen as unimportant or temporary gigs. and that someone should be able to have a livable and decent wage by doing them, and not be required to eventually seek employment elsewhere. even if people moved to lower cost of living areas, high cost areas still need people working those jobs. how come they aren't seen as being worthy of living there?

When I spoke with people in Australia it was interesting on their take about employment. The minimum wage was $18 AUD then. They were telling me in places like Sydney and Gold Coast employers were sometimes paying $10 AUD or more premium (or $28 AUD) to get workers in places like retail stores in shopping malls. There was that much of a shortage. The only way employers will keep workers is to figure out a way to pay them premiums above minimum wage so they can live and pay bills.
