I was a teacher for over two decades. A couple of takeaways: A) Nine times out of ten, we willingly go on tangents because we just can't take another minute of peddling some of the forced drivel we have to teach. B) I never ate anything one of my students brought unless it was in a sealed package, because 13-year-olds are gross. C) If a kid who was an asshat tried to get me going while smirking to his (or, less often, her) friends, I went along with it, then gave them a backup assignment that was worse than what they would have gotten. Kept that shit to a minimum, lol.

Teacher here, and here some situation you can use in your advantage: - after class is over, go and ask a question or show just one exercise you tried to do and you can't get ( even if you know how to do). This give to teacher a baseline where you are struggling and we will not be too harsh if you do small mistakes. - know our birthday - put notes on your exams like" teacher, I only remember until here" will be more likely for you receive some points - use sorry all the time.We let many things pass if you say sorry rather than try to hide Remember, we are want you to pass but we want to see a little effort. Cheating is not the problem, effort is the key. Remember life doesn't have cheat codes 🤓

There are plenty of times where kids think they are being sneaky about their phones but really I’m pretending I do not see them because they aren’t 1. Not massive dicks 2. Are pretty responsible kids anyways. But really more than anything its about not being a massive dick lmao. So I would go in there and at the start of class, just raise my hand and ask, ‘if nuclear power is so good, why does it make so much waste?’ Oh my goodness, she would lose her mind and spend 30 minutes talking about how nuclear power is soooo misunderstood and that we need to use it more, I swear we never got anything done in that class 💀💀💀

I was a teacher for 4 years (in Brazil, which is a very different experince than being a teacher in the U.S.) and the amount of students who tried to bribe me is hilarious to think of. Also, I caught two students cheating on a test once in a really creative way. I thought about scolding them and negating the test altogether, but then I came up with a better idea. I graded the test normally, but wrote on the back of it "I'm playing dumb cause you tried to be smart about it, but I know what you did, and you better not try it again :)" I still remember their faces reading it. Priceless, made it worth to be a teacher. I also quit being one a year later cause I hated planning classes, but you know, kind of ok while it lasted

Also very important thing for high school survival: If you are struggling hard with something in school, especially with a subject, open up and ask your teacher for help. Granted not all teachers will be nice, but the good ones really do notice your effort and are more willing to help you out. Even if it's only one teacher, it's worth it. Of course don't sacrifice your entire life to studying, but a little effort goes a really long way. (From a neurodivergent person who struggled a lot in high school and luckily had some pretty awesome teachers.)

Just remember keep yourselves surrounded with good people, that true friends will both support one another but also call the other out when they need it or need humbling from a place of love. Don't make bad decisions that either guarantee or risk long term consequences, but still make bad decisions because you're kids, that's part of what growing up is all about! Just make sure you don't shoot yourself in the foot for the future because "the man" often doesn't forgive nor forget. Also underrated tip: be confident in class! I know sometimes you wanna become a little weasel and just rot in the back of the class but when you have a point to be made (don’t hog the spotlight tho) say it like you MEAN it. Teachers love a student that has a bit of backbone, and they’re more likely to treat you like an actual adult and more capable than if you are mousey and quiet.

i was an absolute MASTER at getting my history teacher riled up because he was also a philosophy teacher and I was really into philosophy so I would just start asking extremely subjective philosophical questions in history class, which was VERY easy to do since history begs a lot of philosophical questions already. Needless to say, he absolutely loved me and entire lessons would get completely derailed to the point where he couldn't even assign homework or have us take a test on the lesson considering he never got around to teaching the lesson. I also had an English teacher that was a huge fan of Lord of the Rings. One day I came in late to class and she says "You're late" to which I replied "A wizard is never late, we arrive precisely when we mean to" which was a direct quote from Gandolf. She just said "I respect that" and from then on I consistently came late to class and she never marked me down as tardy. I also had a band teacher that happened to attend the same church that my family did so he totally favorited me and basically let me just do whatever the fuck I wanted. I played percussion so I would always choose to play the goofy ass auxiliary percussion instruments that have like one part in the song. He never made me play the bell kit or glockenspiel bc I couldn't read sheet music that had more than one note on the scale lmfaoo. He also let me do this extremely dramatic ending for our last concert before I graduated where I lined up EVERY snare, cymbal, bass drum, etc and just ran down the line hitting every single thing and ended with a MASSIVE gong hit. It was fuckin epic. Shout out to Mr. C for kick starting my passion for drums. Been playing ever since and I'm currently in 4 different bands :)

I graduated 9 years ago now, but 8th grade was my first year of high school (we don't have middle school here) but all of this is true and it should get you through haha. Also carry some of this into the workforce it will save your life.

I ended up becoming friends with my teacher by being nice but also really incompetent with my work, so eventually we kinda just started chatting everyday. still in her class, she teaches a few, sometimes she shares snacks, honestly one of my favorite people.

That schmoozing advice is legit and got me my best jobs in college. Being able to relate to show my professors that I was A. Interested and proficient in the course material and B. a human being who could carry a conversation led to me being able to quit a lower-paying manual labor job and take much easier and higher paying Teaching Assistant jobs. I got paid to hold office hours where I would help students with assignments, test prep and then grade papers. Doing all of that only took about 5% of my office hours. The rest I was paid to do my own homework.

At the moment I am finishing an English project, I spent 3 class periods doing civics, and I have to turn in my Wind Ensemble audition, and then have to turn in my missing Biology paper. I also cheated on my math test, it wasn't even that bad, I just pulled out my notes from that week, but then I have 4 tests next week, because its the week before spring break. Jack for friendmaking: learn how to do something semi interesting like learning how to solve a rubix cube then randomly do it while sitting next to someone. This allows the person to have something to start a conversation with (they might say something like “oh that’s cool!”) if they are open to it and if they don’t say anything well at least you tried!

Very good not actual advice 😉 I didn't cheat besides on my spelling tests way back when, but being nice to teachers really helped make high school better. Being a teacher's pet is so underrated especially if you don't have friends anyways

I'm a minimum effort straight A student so here's my personal take 1). Focus on getting things turned in rather than done propperly, late work drags grades down farther than incomplete or unrevised work 2). Become good friends with quizlet 3). Aim to make as little of an impression as possible on your teachers. Kids who try to be friends with their teachers usually end up overstepping a boundary that inevitably makes them hate them. 4). Don't try to make the best work a teacher has ever seen. The best you can get is 100% and any more than that comes from extra credit that's unrelated to the assignment. Just aim to meet the expectations of the assignment rather than pooring your heart and soul into it for no reason 5). Don't plan activities or hangouts during the school week. Feeling like you have limited or no time to work on your school work because of other shit will tank your motivation and land you with bad grades and late work. This is definitely the common denominator in kids who don't get their work done 6). Collaborate rather than cheat. This is especially applicable for essays. I took an AP literature class where we would be writing as many as 3 essays at a time about books we read, and my friend and I survived by giving each other feedback because the teacher was an unapproachable bitch 7). Know the hill that your teacher will die on. In other words, try to pinpoint what makes them the angriest. For some teachers its backtalk, and other signs of disrespect, but for others its not showing work or listening to them. Knowing what behavior is over the line for them as an individual can keep you in their good graces withought requiring you to suck up.
