“Surviving” a layoff doesn’t mean you’re safe.

Just because you “survived” a round of layoffs, does not mean you shouldn’t take precautions. Always prepare and be ready to take advantage of opportunities that come your way.

Seriously one of the scariest moments of my career was when a couple of the partners at my company came waking down the hallway and pulled one of my coworkers into the conference room and shut the door. Even when I found out I still had a job, the fear never went away - and about 6 months later that fear was realized, but I was prepared.

The survivors are not just traumatised, but are also about to be overworked for no extra pay. The work of those who were laid off needs to be done by someone, and many companies have enabled their hiring freeze.

About the overwork, you need to be smart about it. Show you are willing but that your plate is too full. That way you won't take on 100% unlike the fools who start overperforming and making the smart workers look bad.

I used to work at a meat packibg plant during Covid. We had a wave of it hit us. I was lucky and did not get it, but others did. They got unemployment that paid more than if they were working. Meanwhile, the rest of us were doing their work. The feelings were mixed. We were concerned about the well being of our coworkers but mad that they got more money than us to sit around the house all day and do nothing.

@cooldudicus7668 dude you are a blue collar worker where you get paid hourly and hence ot is part of the equation. Im talking about working at the offices. Where im salaried. I get a certain amount of work that keeps me pretty busy during the 40h im paid. If i foolishly work faster or pickup the slack of other workers, its gonna hurt me as i will doing the extra work for no monetary benefit and possibly also introduce working late in my life. I can't leave early for finishing early so no point in working any harder except for absolute emergency or if i had appointments for which i had to miss work. I also used to work service/retail work as well and i had a similar approach. The hard workers were falling apart by the end of the shift as they expected to do more. Meanwhile i ended my shift just exhausted of boredom. I was still fine in terms of employment. I then during university found out about casual after hours security work where i got paid to just show up. Now despite my salaried job i still work security on the weekend for extra money.

Even though they said we are full? Seemed odd...then I saw on the posting that the pay rate is way below what I was hired at and I was on the lower end when hired. I also got a "friendly" talk with a superior about using my PTO sooner than later and even though I can carry over a week, I don't have to...hmmm. trying to get me to use my PTO now so they don't have to pay it out with my severance? When I got laid off from my last job amid the pandemic 4 years ago I had a good enough safety net to fall back on and the feeling between me and my boss was mutual as that job was really getting too stagnating (some people have suggested to me about going back to work there and I'm like HELL NO!). As my late grandfather told me several years earlier when getting my first job coming out of college is that a career will come with many twists and turns and that many opportunities will arise in the future, which it did with a good job transition for me 3 years ago. And looking back when I left my past employer driving out saying "goodbye forever" I could've gave the Nixon wave getting into my car. Lol

This is one of many reasons I wouldn't stay at a job for more than a year.

I stayed at my last one for more than 3... I was waiting for that layoff and my impatience got me fired instead...close enough

I have gone through (and survived) multiple big lay off rounds, and to be honest I kind of find it exciting. I see it as part of corporate life. Also it can bring opportunity sometimes, for some people. Although there are situations in which you have no influence because they for example let go off an entire department, if you bring value to the company, this gives you a relatively high chance to survive. If you're an asset and they know it, they will find a way to keep you. Lesson: be an asset. If my employer wants to lay me off because they think they're better off without me, I wish them good luck. It will be their loss.
