Surviving 423 Days In Africa's Most Dangerous Prison
In this short documentary we take a look at the incredible true story of how Daniel survived 423 days in one of the worst prisons in the world, Black Beach prison!
Daniel was hired to set up a new airline in Equatorial Guinea and had just flown down to finalise the contracts when his business partner Teodoro Nguema also known as Teddie had a change of heart.
Within days of his arrival Teddie pulled out of the deal and Daniel was detained without charges. He spent some time in and out of detention centres but his case was eventually put in-front of a judge and it was immediately thrown out due to a lack of evidence.
At this time Teddie was out of the country and Daniel was free to return home. Or so he thought.
A few hours before Daniel was set to board his flight home Teddie arrived back in the country and when he was notified that Daniel was about to leave he sent armed men to stop him. Daniel was detained once again and taken to the notorious prison located on Bioko island off the mainland of Equatorial Guinea.
Black Beach Prison was built in the 1940s during the time of the Spanish colonial rule. It has a reputation for systematically neglecting and brutalising inmates. Medical treatment is usually denied and food rations are said to be meagre. Detainees are often tortured and their lives are in constant threat due to overcrowding poor living conditions.
