I notice a bottle of “Bitters” in the background. Is that for your favourite cocktail ? (I use it in “steelworks”) And what is in the ice bucket ? Something to keep you warm? 😉 I suppose the first rule of successful navigation is, make sure that you’re sober ! ☝️🤣

The problem with adding declination to your compass bearing in your example is that you have already offset your map for the declination. Therefore, any bearing that you take from the map once oriented & offset, will already be adjusted for declination.

Learning skills are all a process. At some point you'll be so lost that it will frustrate you enough to take out a map and compass. C

Hi Nico! Thanks for the comment. I get my maps from department of agriculture, land reform and rural development in Mowbray CT. They're not good at answering their phones but they are open during the day for people to drop in and buy maps. R25 each. I must admit that I am too lazy to use a compass. I navigate, during the day, using the sun. I still need to learn navigation by stars. But great content, as always. Thanks.

Hi Stefan! Some people have an absolute knack for navigation and if your wife says you can do it by the sun then you're good! ;) I'm joking, but it's great to at least have the sun navigation down, that way you're able to orientate yourself quickly without too much fussing about a compass. C

What will you do when compas is useles since there's magnetic disturbance? 😅

Also insects and moss on tree trunks only grows on one side. And orchids plus using an analogue watch. The moon can be used depending on the weather and times of the year knowledge is power. Like the Navajo Apache. And Seminole us Indians good luck. Stephen. Brisbane. Aus.

A compass simply helps you maintain a determined direction of travel. With a good topo map, a navigator can use natural landmarks to determine the direction of travel without the use of a compass. There are also many methods to maintain direction of travel called 'dead reckoning'. Navigation by dead reckoning is commonly used by bush pilots in the Canadian arctic, where magnetic navigation is impossible and even GPS coverage can be spotty.

Are you sure that your ice bucket won’t influence your compass ? 🤓
