Surrendering Does Not Make Sense, But It Does | Alan Watts

Welcome to Way of Thinking! Alan Watts shares his insights on surrendering and how it can lead to a more peaceful and fulfilling life. Alan Watts talks about our constant need for control can prevent us from experiencing the beauty of life and love, and how surrendering to the present moment can open us up to new possibilities. Alan Watts talks about the spectrum of love, how sometimes it doesnt make any sense to surrender; but in reality is the where our sanity lies.
Who is Alan Watts?
Alan Watts (1915-1973) was a prominent British philosopher, writer, and speaker celebrated for his significant contribution to bringing Eastern philosophy and spiritual ideas to the Western world. Originating from England, he cultivated a profound interest in Buddhism and Taoism during his early years. In the early 1930s, Watts moved to the United States, where he played an incredibly important role in shaping the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

As someone trying to start an entrepreneurial venture, the way I interpret Alan Watts helps me keep going. I often get so worried about my path. Will the all the hard work be for nothing? Am I a fool? Will I be able to support myself? Alan Watts concept of love, helps me see that the anxiety I feel is the manifestation of the love I'm expressing. The reason why I'm going is because I find myself still on this path despite the fact that it's riddled with anxiety. Sometimes, overwhelming anxiety. However, the courage needs the anxiety. If anxiety disappears so does the courage. The Success or Failure label is subjective to the individual.

Fascinating to find this comment. Listening to Watts gave me the courage to start my own business and leave my old career and network and security behind. It was hugely successful until my partner/fiancé died last year… and while the business died this past year, it’s success gave me the time (and money) to properly grieve and grow. I’m at the point where I must choose to either shutter it or start it all over and before - this would have caused me great anxiety and stress but I know it’s just a matter of if I still love the work or not. Life is 99% our attitude about what the world offers us and the faster we accept what is in front of us, the better we are for it.

Hi Lester, consider your anxiety as a message from you inner guru about how you are doing and how you are relating the present moment. I get that it looks like it is telling you about your circumstance, that is never the case. This is Alan's core message and it helps you see things a bit differently and get a glimpse behind the veil. You said, "I often get so worried about my path". The path was created by you, as was the anxiety, as was the veil. Alan teaches life is a game, leela, is the ultimate cosmic game of hide and seek. Divinity, hiding itself from itself for the sheer joy of discovery once again. Leela is the practice of playing the game of life consciously as well as the basic nature of the divine. If you think his teaching is telling you to continue on your journey for some future reward, you are missing his message IMHO. Follow the path and keep going from the understanding that tomorrow is an illusion. The path is about allowing the expression of the Divine IAM always from the point of view of the eternal NOW Deep Trances

Unconditional love is loving yourself. Loving every little flaw or imperfection, your weight, your looks, your financial status no matter how imperfect any of these are in your eyes. Once you learn unconditional love nobody can give you happiness or take your happiness away. They can only add to your happiness because you come to understand that true happiness comes from within so only you are in charge of how you feel.

The amount of synchronicities in my life are astounding. I was thinking hard about committing myself to stand up and find my significant other and today I heard my brother talking to his girlfriend about how nasty I am for reasons I am well aware of (to feel good about himself I guess, it feels like a knife is turned in me every time this happens, consistently) then this just comes up like some "terms and conditions" before joining something and with an added explanation about this sensation of getting a pat on the back. It was very connected to my day today. This feels too personal but it is meant to be in a way since this is for everyone. ❤ Life is a bit humourous with me sometimes.

I told you that the day we met when I introduced myself." Looking back, what made her mad the most was not that I was more right than her but that I had always planned in advance some answer that gave me an agreeable out when she was right. 😁

I believe love is something that is different for everyone, I do agree that it is a choice, but also something that happens in an instant. It's like a reconnection and in that sense surrendering to love allows for the continuation of ourselves. I believe loving oneself (in your own way) and loving everything around you is the same thing, based on the law of reflection, as the world is our mirror.

This reminded me of praising a child with an earning every time they do something they should naturally do. Just like how we love our families already so Gods commandment is a piece of cake. So the challenge is showing love to an enemy lol or not so thought of person … lol as I type this he speaks of the verse I’m thinking of. How I practice being less selfish I put myself last. Even in prayer. Or serving myself food… progress ;) I like to think Alan and I would agree on many things and I wonder if there’s differences we could teach each other… or just have those questions answered.

I do much needed this video. Thanks. I now understand that the seven types of Platonic love as put forward by the philosopher, Plato are really one form of the same thing. I've come to realize that in loving,we are imitating the divine and it doesn't matter if it's lust or unconditional love, it's still expressing the same thing, which is the divinity in all.

Hate comes from a combination of love and illusion. Hitler loved life's beauty and his illusion was that mass murder will protect this beauty. The opposite ensued. Love (I love) Turns to fear (I might lose what I love!) Turns to hatred (I must destroy that which threatens what I love!)

I was initially a little leery to listen to him. However, I’m glad that I did. I thought he made some very interesting and insightful observations. I think Ayn Rand really clearly identifies the concept of rational egoism, or rational self interest. In other words, I think that she clearly and rationally explains what it means to love one’s self or oneself. Subsumed under the concept of loving oneself is the idea that you love those whom you value. In other words in loving yourself, it necessarily means that you will love certain others, because they represent your highest values and virtues. Ayn Rand articulates this comprehensively. I would highly recommend to anyone that they explore the ideas of Ayn Rand. She really gets to the essence, she explores all the ramifications, and she deals with any apparent or real contradictions. Nonetheless, I really did enjoy this video.

Conversations have become dull and pointless because people are dull and pointless. Up for work, out to work and home from work and finally to sleep and just rinse and repeat. Get to see your children for an hour a day until they're 14 and then they and you don't even know who each other are. All for a job you most likely don't enjoy, to pay for an over sized house and a bright shiny car and to fund a retirement that you're really too old to even enjoy. Nobody lies on their death bed thinking they should have worked more hours and spent less time with their children. Modern times are breaking the spirit of man kind.

Do not believe this. Freedom is the state where you are empty of all nonsense talk. You will see the truth when your mind is empty of any form of logic, concepts, memories, etc. Our mentality is that we don't easily get convinced unless the speaker is a guro. We assumed everything the guro was saying was true because we believed they were more knowledgeable than us. But if you follow someone, you are more likely to get misled. The truth has no path, and there is no need to make an effort to find it. No one can lead you there.

You put out some valuable content. A little off topic maybe, but there’s this woman I got in touch with during the lockdown which cost me my job. Ms. Norman Davis helped me manage my assets by introducing my to the best investing platform and strategies, I earned a lot of $$$ working with Norman at the comfort of my home. I still keep in touch with the amazing lady

I run a mini food business in Paris which have been affected by food inflation and I needed a side hustle that could help me boost my small business, so I could give my employees better wages , I got in contact with Ms. Norman a month ago and my stories became testimonies… I wasn’t charged on my first investment with her. Yes, I received my first returns last week… I’m considering reinvesting

I have a master in mathematical finance, so it wasn’t so easy to get me convinced to begin an investment without me carrying out proper research on her. I had her broker ID checked and she’s fully verified! So I began with a few bucks, only to get huge returns in a month. I reinvested and now I get long term monthly returns… So glad I don’t rely on pay checks anymore.

Watts is wrong about self love. The problem is that most people do not authentically love themselves. Most people don't even really know themselves. When a person seeks inwardly for self knowledge, one encounters their shadow or dark side. The reason the shadow is split off from the Soul is because it is not loved. The most difficult thing one can accomplish is to love their shadow and integrate it. It is an immense moral challenge. Most people project their shadow onto scapegoats and minorities.

Or people associate and integrate their own shadow too much, your shadow is nothing more than your own shame and regret for previous actions decisions and all that you wish could be changed, truly loving yourself is letting go of all of it and realizing you can change your interpretation and raise your own concious vibration for the better regardless of what past mistakes are made because soul is separate from your body and the ego is simply a manifestation of your own experiences, working with your shadow is accepting what cannot be changed and what you can do right now in the present moment to become the person you envision yourself being and any resistance is the shadow or rather a part of you thay clings to certain moments,,, but there is no time only the current moment in existence, which is relative to whomever is there to perceive it,, the past is simply measurement of memories long gone and living in your own shadow is not necessarily going to solve anything but accepting what your shadow is and how you overcome it not integrating it into your everyday life although maybe you worded it weird,, I wouldn't say integrating your shadow is how you live with it but recognizing what it is and moving forward with always being present so you dont look back and go gahd dahmmet i dun screwed up again lmao
