Creating a handmade custom DIY surreal art collage is easy! I share my tips and techniques on how I create my analog collages as I cut out pictures and illustrations out by hand with a small pair of scissors and a craft knife. Finding inspiration from old books is one of the most fun steps to this process. These can come from used books, encyclopedias, magazines, vintage postcards, or anything else you can find lying around your house. I find most of my books and magazines from thrift stores, antique stores, flea markets, Craigslist, or even on the side of the road! Watch as I arrange my elements and try different ideas as I talk through my process to create my final design.
Collages made out of paper have a custom made feel that you can't get from a digital collage made in Photoshop. And, there is an added challenge of only being able to use materials that you have access to!
Want to try creating your own? Just grab a magazine, scissors, and a glue stick!

Every time that I watch you, I am impressed by your creative process. When I work on my collage, I sometimes feel that I don't take enough time to explore options but then sometimes if I take too much time I feel like I'm second guessing my choices.

Thank you for the kind words! I feel like every piece is different and needs to develop in its own way. I try really hard not to over think things. There will always be another piece!

I work so hard, it had some real propulsion when my papers starting hitting the boardroom. It was the most fun exemption for foolhardy fashion in my recent memory

I was so shock you trimmed that beautiful night sky! My reaction was visceral when I saw it happen! That's how invested I am in your process. I can see why you did it; the results are great. But preferences and a touch of backseat arting. 😅

i definitely need to invest in an Exacto Knife and a mat. I’ve been using scissors to cut stuff like this out and it’s so time consuming and the cut isn’t close enough. Love your work!

To cover any white lines left after you cut out intricate images, use a colored marker .

Thank you! Yes, use tiny scissors! I have so much more control and get nicer edges with scissors. You need to use an xacto for places that scissors can't reach, but that's about it. Also, you'll get better with practice! I know I use them a lot in my videos, but that's just because its more satisfying to watch :) Off camera I use scissors so much.

I have a filing system where I store pages by what’s on the image, but keep smaller cut outs in a box. It’s not super fancy haha. I’m planning a book tour and organize ideas video-stay tuned!
