"Dimes to doughnuts" was "Dollars to doughnuts" when I grew up in midwest in the 60's. The doughnuts referenced were not the tasty treats but rather proxy for zero, the number, as a doughnut looks like a zero. Fantastic build. I am glad your folks liked it.

Yeah the original phrase is "Dollars to Doughnuts." Never heard the dimes thing. The Daily Nevada State Journal, February 1876: "Whenever you hear any resident of a community attempting to decry the local paper... it's dollars to doughnuts that such a person is either mad at the editor or is owing the office for subscription or advertising."

I'm 67 and have made a living working with wood all my life. I have a mahogany lap desk, with a secret compartment, that my granddad (furniture maker) made for my grandmother. It was the last thing he made before going off to die in WW2. Make things. Pass them on. When your son goes off to college, or travelling or whatever when he's young, offer to store that piece you made for him. Give it back to him later in his life and maybe he will pass it on one day. One thing that you make, no matter how you think it turned out, means more than a million factory made pieces of junk. Good luck with your journey and have fun!

For the measurement debate, I love the metric system. I didn't realize that 1cm^3 is 1 ml. There's no equivalent in imperial. I started using it more with my 3D printer and started liking it more. I also actively use the imperial system daily as well with things like cooking, weight, height of a person, and lumber

I'm from Ireland and my father is a carpenter. We use Metric here, but I grew up using Imperial because that's what carpenters and some other trades use. I'm currently a welder/fabricator and back to using Metric and I can say there is definitely a time and place for both. Imperial is much easier to fathom and remember while working but I need to keep running back and forth to my measurements to make sure I'm cutting the right millimetre. And when we buy timber it's in inches. Steel is by mm.

Ive had a similar experience with a fire in a dust extractor. It was caused by a tiny shard of metal that may have been in the timber, entering the fan and sparking. Fine sawdust is extremely flammable, as you know.

I had a similar dust issue with my CNC. Being in sunny Sydney Australia, I usually just push all of my dusty woodworking operations out onto the driveway and enjoy the sunshine whilest blessing the neighbours with my dust. This keeps my garage clean and dust free 🙂. However, I have a CNC that I built and this beast of a thing generally stays put, so it has a shopvac/cyclone and I duct the waste air outside. One day I was doing a really lengthy operation on some MDF and left the CNC unattended (we both know how bad an idea this is). When the noise stopped, I came back into the garage and there was dust everywhere - piled up is little snow drifts in the corners, against everything and on everything 🥺. It seems that some material broke free and was sucked up into the cyclone, which then blocked and sent the dust to the shopvac, which quickly gave up and blocked and somehow forced off the vent hose - at which point buckets and buckets of MDF dust swirled around everywhere.

I grew up with the 'trades' and have always used imperial units. Building houses and such. Then for my 2nd 30 year career I worked in the trades for a Japanese automaker where all the machines I worked on (presses/CNC mills) were metric. So now I can look at a nut/bolt wrench and tell you the size at a glance, either imperial or metric.

Crazy opinion here, but your parent's plywood dining table was one of your first videos I ever watched and it is still one of my favorite designs of yours from over the years. I love seeing how you re-imagined it hardwood. It is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us, and I'm so glad that you and your shop are ok.

Thanks...yeah, I always liked that one too. I just think that the single, central spine for support was sort of a design flaw. So this one will hold up better through the years. Plus its' more their style.

Watching from the Philippines. I love your art and I prefer the metric system when it comes to measurement. Thanks

Great reveal and fun video. Funny, I'm in the middle of constructing a base and need to layout the mortises, but I don't know where they need to be until I know based on where they touch, but that depends on a few factors which makes, as you said, a seemingly simple task complex

Metric for science, and does it really matter for anything else. For furniture, it needs to be functional and beautiful. Your table fits that criteria. Stunning. So glad that you and your shop are okay, and thank you for sharing the moment with your parents. I do hope that Ikea heard you.

Love the table and your parents reaction. But I love my brass chunky mechanical pencil more. Just got it in the mail last week and I can’t put it down. It’s awesome!!! Glad to hear you’ve got another batch in the works

I wish I had a product or service that I needed a KZread sponsorship partner for. You’re practical use of the products and natural way of integrating them into your videos actually make people like myself curious about them and click the link. Makes it feel less like a commercial I wish I could skip and more like an informative recommendation from someone I trust. I appreciate that I wanted to let you know. Thanks for the great videos!

Thank you! I wish more brands would trust the people they partner with to "do their thing"...I feel like it's a win-win-win for the brand, the "KZreadr" and the audience. In some ways it's becoming more like that, in other ways...less. Hope it continues evolving the good way.

Fires are common when you have airborne fine particles, fires in flour mills were common, many years ago. The table is beautiful, just like your mum. The leg assembly looked awesome too. I was an apprentice in 1970 just as metric was introduced in the UK, so I was schooled in both metric and imperial. I've worked all over the UK, Europe and the US so having a firm understanding of them both is a bonus. I have to admit as I've got older the metric system has taken the lead. Great post, stay safe and well, thanks for posting. 👍

Great work! Looked awesome. FYI, crystalized epoxy is because at some stage it got cold, you need to warm it in a hot water bath, about 60°C and it will dissolve back to normal.
