Surprising Answers From Fmr CIA Director Mike Pompeo on Spending, Defense & Entitlements

I never expect much from politicians. But Mike Pompeo, a possible candidate for president, surprised me.

----
Pompeo used to be CIA Director and Secretary of State.
I wanted to talk to him because he might run for president.
I confronted him about Republican hypocrisy on spending.
I pushed him on whether he’d cut entitlements.
Would he abolish the Department of Education?
His answers were not what I expected.

My father worked for a school system for his entire life and retired in 1983. When federal money started coming to schools in the late 1960s, I remember his saying, "This couldn't be worse. Local control of the schools will be gone and the federal government will control everything,"

No long the Soc Sec FDR signed into law... now it includes many who never paid Soc Sec taxes. Why are these facts not even mentioned ? John, you should understand this too.

My favorite part about his interviews is when he responds to an interviewee's answer with a question on the same subject that is from a diametrically opposed viewpoint in response to his interviewee's answer, which prompts the interviewee to elaborate on their response in further detail and deeper context. It's actually a phenomenal way to create a great discussion, and I love that John is so natural when he poses these questions.

I see humans in everyone, and I saw him relieved to finally be able to speak his mind. I believe at the end stossel got ticked off at some stubborn parts of him; but overall we get to see his non-political side. Likely; he's on route to retire, or is going to try a more "human" strategy to get a minor position; so this is his way of letting off some steam of having to keep up a facade, actually speaking your mind is difficult in politics. this is the one time you see the human behind the politician.

I mean you can't even get politicians to give you lip service anymore. I'm not saying it's worth much but when everyone else is scared to say anything and if I have nothing else to go on I'd take the guy who makes the promise over the guy who won't. Though I'll be real with you, I don't have much faith in any politician actually walking the walk even if they have the proper talk. Seems to me they get infront of the controls and they go "time to steer this bitch where I want". I trust that happening more than I trust most people.

On the flip side, there have been hundreds of politicians who have done exactly what they have promised. We should be skeptical of every difficult promise and look at that individual's track record. You are correct that we have been lied to by politicians plenty of times, but we shouldn't have been surprised after the first time they were elected. We keep electing career politicians who have lied every step of the way (ahem, Biden!) And we somehow expect them to be honest this time around. That is primarily the fault of the American voter. We should be more involved in the primaries so we don't end up with choices we don't like in the general election. If we keep voting these people in, we sort of deserve what we get.

Most of the value of lots of department could be had by just having them define terms and then enforcing truth in advertising laws: You don't have to do X, but if you say you are doing X and aren't, then you will get in trouble. Much of the rest could be had as pure empirical research operations. That still leaves room for issues (defining existing terms to be something nobody expects? selective enforcement? politically motivated selection of terms?), but it would pare down the room for a lot of overreach.
