Yes, it really is a farce. As youngest child of large family, I was actually taught this saying: "Good little *Indians don't cry." (*Native American) My ability to cry at normal moments where most would, is very abnormal.

It's also works in the reverse. Just the way they didn't believe they young lady because she didn't cry, they also tend to believe a person just because they're crying. No evidence, just tears. The young lady probably didn't cry because she thought she could trust the justice system to help her out. I bet she cried when they failed her.

@@jackmellor5536 I would introduce life in prison without parole for sexual offences against children and in some cases the death penalty,to many sex offenders are walking away from court and don't stop,many are housed near their victims and other children,1 estate I lived in had 73 nonces staying there and there were 2 schools and a nursery besides the estate.there needs to be reform in the system,and how about a fully transparent judge.

At 65 years of age, I told of childhood family abuse, and was roundly scolded by friends for saying such horrible things about such "lovely" people. It's like being abused all over again.

At just shy of 16 , I went to the police in our small town. I reported physical abuse from parents, and sexual abuse by brother. I was not believed. I was made to apologize to him. In spite of this as an adult I had great respect and admiration for him. I started therapy and realized Stockholm syndrome is real. I finally understood why I was a people pleaser, why certain sexual acts made me nauseous and so much more. I wrote him a letter to try and understand. I was shocked when I was subsequently ghosted by his whole family. I now realize he is a coward first and foremost, second there is never just one. Never just one time , etc. I lived with many, many people. Yet he was only caught once. And he used the idea of “ curiosity “ to explain it away. I remember hiding in the trash burner to avoid him. He was almost a decade older. Do I think other people knew? No. Unless they were a victim also. In that case, they were just glad it wasn’t them.

The re-traumatising, corrupt, likely poorly Investigated without resources or goodwill systemic abuse towards the victim to uncover the hidden evil more aptly put. Injustice in the justice system intensifies beyond belief the trauma of child sexual abuse whether you be the victim or even a witness traumatised and disbelieved as it further silences the child at the heart of it. EVIL is the correct word for child sexual abuse.

“She didn’t cry enough,” because she was numbed by the abuse and harsh apathy of her mother. Neither parent deserved this child. I pray she’s found peace in her life.

Trauma causes disassociation. This is how people who have suffered horribly to speak about it plainly. To survive you have to separate the pain and emotions from the event. Don't be too harsh on the jury. It's our fault that we don't educate the populace on trauma.

There is a report on the TV of abuse and your friend says "That is horrible." And when I told her it happened to me as well . . . Yep, she looked at me like I had just sprouted a wart on the end of my nose They can belive and have great sympathy for the child in the report. I learned after I came to terms with my abuse that what i considered friendship did not include empathy. And I am still determined to out live every last one of them. It took until I was 35 years old to completely separate myself from my family and the vast majority of those I used to consider friends. Over the ensuing years I have been lucky to have found new friends. Those who accept me "warts and all". Wasn't easy at times and sometimes isn't still. My damage was inflected early. Some pain never completely recedes. But many new joys have come along. The gracefull flight of the hummingbirds that visit me in the spring. Learning to accept the love and loyalty of my dog. Taking up the saxophone I longed for as a child. (Some days i sound half decent) Growing food to give away at the senior center. I am the product of all my experiences. I learned to not be the victim of some . . . 🦋

My cousin start touching me when I was 14 years old, I pretended to be asleep most of the time cause I was too scared to confront him and I didn't wanted anyone to find out. I still remember being unable to move and having to go to the washroom after to cry as quietly as I could. I kept quiet cause I did not wanted to upset my mom or create family problems. When I told my sister she forced me to have a talk with my cousin where he promised he was not going to do it again (he did) and told me to keep being quite about it. This was years ago and my mom recently found out by going through my Facebook messages after I lent her my old phone. She just told me to forgive him cause he was going for a dark time back then. That broke my heart. I was so scared back then cause I thought that if I talked about this I could break my family apart and I had to endure it by myself but now I know that even if I had talked about it there would not be anything different.

@@kellykirkpatrick8978 Forgiving has been proven to simply be impossible for some victims of child abuse. Insisting they would be fine if they could just forgive is blaming the victim. Most victims do not want to hang on to their trauma and would forgive and forget if it WAS ACTUALLY POSSIBLE!

Sue Black, i know there is almost no chance you read this comment - or any of the many others praising your gift of time, intelct and understanding in your career and in this presentation, but as someone affected deeply by what you chose to talk about here, i am beyond happy and truly speechless in my admiration of your work and prose. Of my law enforcement career, I spent the majority of it as a detective working violent crime, death, and child sexual abuse cases. So many child sexual abuse cases. I salute anyone who works them, chokes down the rage, can interview the offender, and go through the heart-wrenching, teeth-gnashingly absurd mental gymnastics a jury will go through in order to turn an offender loose because they just don't want to believe this sort of thing happens (or it has happened to them and they don't want to face it).

You are so right on this. It is dodging their parental responsibility. Another aspect we all should be aware of and sensitive to (not excusing this behavior but considering other aspects of this) is these people were more than likely sexually abused as well as babies and children. They did not know how to handle it. Kids who grow up in 'no boundaries' households are told what to do and say. And often times in these kinds of homes (which by the way are usually generational family bloodlines whose spirituality is satanism and or luciferianism practice laced with black magic and conjuring demons to pay for their favors granted. So without a great therapist and long hours of working through the harshness of this kind of life - you can't heal. You can come out of this kind of darkness but you got to fight like heck for your complete emancipation and the restoration of all the pieces of your heart and soul. This work is not for sissies - it is for the strongest of the strong hearts who want this more than anything. I believe people who were abused in this way go three ways in life. They NEVER abuse another and turn their abuse inwards upon themselves or they abuse others all their life to live with the pain. Or they dance in and out of abusing self and abusing others all their lives and live a surface existance so they don't have to look at all that stuff buried deep within with hugh gpaing unattended wounds. We can't see the scars but boy do they cause havoc in the human energy field. NEVER EVER should we excuse an abuser for these kind of actions - but we must have compassion and we must pray for them and help them come out of this torturous lifestyle. Help them FREE themselves even if this is just by you exampling doing this in your own life. And many times our toxic family members don't want us to get better. They can't bully us or bend us to their will . . . Some times the only thing we can do with one of these kinds of people who refuse to look honestly within and fix it . . . YOU GOTTA WALK AWAY or you will go down with their darkness. EVIL is a CHOICE. So are happiness and love. Love starts within ourselves and emaniates outwards. BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN OUR WORLD MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS.

You missed the point...

When you are abused you become an expert at hiding your true feelings. No way I’m crying over something this awful in front of people I don’t know I can trust. This poor girl.

What an amazing woman! And what an extremely difficult job she has… I couldn’t even imagine what a day in her work life would be like. She deserves all the applause in the world. Her message is SO important and I really do hope someone can come up with a solution to this horrendous problem.

It is DISGUSTING how our justice system handles sexual assault. The fact that you can get more time for a drug charge than for assaulting a child/multiple children is so disturbing. God bless this woman for the work she does!

The very fact that a Jury did not find this man guilty because his daughter did not cry enough, and the fact that the Judge also accepted this, beggars belief. This young girl learned very early in life that you 'must not cry' because it was embedded into her brain from the very first day her Father abused her. There are so many things wrong in our judicial system, when this is allowed. The anger I feel right now is unbelievable too. On a brighter note, it's awesome to see your work IS getting through to people now.

"She didn't cry enough" Dafuq? Minors cannot give free consent. Forget crying, it's sexual assault even if she was expressing enjoyment and urging the perpetrator on.

Yeah most victims don't cry as we're able to detach ourselves from reality..... it's a coping mechanism for survival and daily function, I never cried until I got near 40 years old and began remembering more and worse events that took place!

"She didn't cry enough" Wow, I'm going to go puke now. So many survivors shut down emotionally to survive. By the time they get to court (if they ever do) there are no tears left.

My first case in court was a drug and child abuse prosecution. The evidence was available and the forensic scientist did an excellent job. This lady is helping so many people. I am impressed

It’s horrible at how much of these predators there are. I wish there was a definitive way to identify them.

So first you have everybody telling you" be strong and hold yourself together" when being the victim, and then you have the jury didn't believe you because you were being strong and holding yourself together!?

As a child, my mom wouldn't even let my uncles take my sister or me to the bathroom. It's not that she doesn't trust them, it's because she didn't believe that any measure was too extreme. And I don't know if that has an effect or not, but I am extremely thankful that my mom was so aware and protective of these issues.

That is exactly how it should be, your mom did the right thing, took no chances with your future happiness and mental health. Most parents are more concerned with thinking it is wrong or impolite of them to even think that the people they know could do such a thing, so they ignore the possibility. Child molesters go after the easy targets, so their best bet is kids of people they know, otherwise they go for vulnerable kids, the ones who aren't listened to, who aren't believed, the ones who don't have anyone watching over them like your mom watched over you. I am grateful for every parent like her

Honestly, that's a good way to protect everyone. I approve of it. I would never take my niece to the bathroom. The stories strangers could invent just isn't worth the risk. Well that and anytime I'm with my niece, my sister is there too. So if I pick her up and take her somewhere, it's always outside so she can play while she waits for mommy to finish.

*8:00* A 15 year sentence for drugging and raping a child is barbaric. You are not a civilized society unless you treat criminals equally or more harshly than their victims and 15 years in a jail cell is not equivalent to what that criminal did to that child.

Oh my gosh! A judge didn't believe me over 45 years ago because I didn't cry. Heck, I'd been violated since I was three, I was way past crying! I thought we'd become smarter with time, but I guess I was wrong. My heart breaks for the children being used in this way.

If it was the judge's daughter that was molested from the age of three and didn't cry, would he throw his daughter under the railroad train? How many jurors have been molested as children, vote to acquit because they never told. Or did and weren't believer by Law Enforcement or the court system. "I survived it and it wasn't all that bad. And so a lot of people upon seeing real gore just dismiss it as fake. Some physicals phenomena look fake too if you have no experience with them. But yes, being skeptical is good.

people value their peace of mind more than justice. They simply don't want to believe a father could do that to a child; "when he seems so nice" I'm sure he was there and was charming. The line about her not being upset enough is just reasoning to justify willful blindness. They want to believe child-molestation is something only a particular type of twisted social misfit does; not an otherwise happily married upstanding male of their community. That would be profoundly troubling; which isn't acceptable. No. it's much more comforting to assure one's self the girl is mistaken; or worse.

No, they're aren't taught to not cry (they may be be taught not to tell), it's the human variance in survival skills. I watched a documentary once of two sisters molested by their dad. I think they shared a bedroom. One was completely dry-eyed, stoic, flat affect, emotionlesd, matter of fact. By contrast the other sister cried, sobbed, was over emotional, weepy throughout the interview. I would say they were both deeply affected, but had different coping skills.

The thing that drives me crazy is the fact that she literally CAUGHT HIM ON VIDEO and they let him off, because she didn't "cry enough". As someone who was sexually abused/assaulted most their life and never got justice, this boils my blood. Not only that, but when you do cry about it, people call you dramatic and then acuse you of faking it. 🤬 😡😥 Thank you so much for what you do, the science and the work you do is amazing. I was groomed for trafficking when I was a 10 year old child. Only the fact that I came from a family that would be dangerous to the traffickers saved me from it. A few years later, the perpetrators went away for a very long time. I am now a 73 year old man, and I understand what happened, and what would have happened. I would have no compunction, even today, about pulling the trigger on such as these. They are worse than monsters.

I feel your pain, I was sexually abused by my neighbor when I was 6. Nobody believed me and I lived with the nightmares and smells and tastes for years. Even went to counseling in college for it. Then I joined the army as an infantryman and I’ve already tracked him down. Going to give him the Christmas his victims deserve this year. Tomorrow is going to be a great day!

That's just the prosecutors perspective of their reasoning (you'd blindly believe that?); after having spend so much time identifying the dad with a new method, surely they become biased and eager to prove themselves; that became more important than the truth, thus their reasoning is twisted to support themselves rather than justice; basic human nature, everything we do is to uphold our self worth and esteem. "Devils advocate" here. The father might as well have been overly protective and paranoid about his childs wellbeing; maybe he simply went in to make sure she was alive. I know for a fact that some parents are scared shitless about the wellbeing of their sleeping child. Simply assuming that his intentions was abusive is extremely irresponsible, unfair and neglectful, ironically. The average person acts by feelings without introducing logic and unbiased thinking, and immediately bring out the pitchfork once there's just a hint that something horrible is happening. I agree with the jury if there was no evidence of abuse; him going in there at night is not proof whatsoever that he abused his child, it's merely questionable. If they had convicted him regardless, they might as well have destroyed a well balanced family, but you people don't think about that, because your feelings completely control you and make you see red. This mentality causes more hurt than it avoids. However, all that said, this is a double edged sword, and he might very well have had ill intentions, so we have to initially stay entirely unbiased and let evidence speak.

Know your worth. Women have had to learn to be self-deprecating.... for far too long.

This woman is a gifted wonder. She’s a soldier for children, an advocate for the sexually abused innocents, and her weapon is science. I hope and pray she goes far in helping the victims get justice. May God protect her and bless her, and all those who are trying to beat these crimes against children.

Remember: the courts put Aileen Wournous to death. Sexual predators get 5-10 years, if anything at all. We need to speak up about the problem of courtroom justice consistently defending male perpetrators over female victims. Name the problem! (This women's work is incredible and this isn't an accusation on her or her science, this is a fascinating video)

If you had trusted your mother and she was always telling you "Don't let anyone ever touch you inappropriately (etc. etc), and you need to tell mommy if they do", would you have told her? @@santa3018 thank you, it’s been incredibly difficult , I honestly blamed myself for the entire situation, which is silly in retrospective, it was because calling out the person caused a lot of problems and there were serious repercussions, so I lived with a lot of guilt for many reasons , it wasn’t until recently talking with my mother about it that she told me how much she appreciated it because she had no idea what was going on and it could have continued ... it helped a lot and I felt such a relief , I never had that perspective before. I know my sisters want to talk about it publicly at some point and so will I, it’s really important for kids and families to be able to talk about these things and not be embarrassed

@@dancingin2024 I think the most important thing is making sure your daughter knows that no matter what she ever does or what ever happens, that you are there to love her and protect her and she should never be afraid to talk to you or bring something up. Maybe find examples of silly things she’s done in the past that maybe she was embarrassed about or a mistake she made and how when you both dealt with it it was fine and not a big deal.

The fact that the girl had the presence of mind to record the abuse shows that her intellect functions in a more methodical way than those whose responses are more emotionally driven. That would logically account for her not being triggered quite as intensely during her trial. This should in no way jeopardise the verdict. This suggests to me that the jury suspended their own logic and responded to a perceived lack of emotion on the girl's part, which in itself is an emotional response and should not be used as a means of deciding if a victim has suffered sufficiently to procure a just verdict.

The jury almost certainly believed that they *were* being logical, because “if it really happened, she would be more emotional” is an attempt at a logical argument. It’s totally wrong, but it can easily be made dispassionately and they would never have seen themselves as being swayed by emotion. If anything, you’d think emotion might move them to some compassion.

+Lida Hall One thing is that people are not at all educated on how many types of behaviour are normal in victims of sexual abuse. I wouldn't be surprised at all had the girl not been able to stop giggling. No reason for me not to believe her. Not because I'm an expert in human behaviour in extreme situations. But because I know that I'm not. I know enough to know how little I know. I am humble enough to be able to admit to myself I'm pretty ignorant on the subject. Another thing is that jury members (and judges) sometimes just don't want to believe. A mother can burn her child with an iron, leaving the most typical burn marks on the child's cheek, burn marks that only occur when the iron is pushed on the child's cheek. Experts in the field can testify that it is not at all possible it was an accident, especially not the kind of accident the mother claims happens. Experts can cite statistics on the prevalence of child abuse. And the mother will still go free because enough jury members or the judge say "a mother would never do that to her own child."

Marie Lastname I totally agree with you, its so much easier not to face reality. Sometimes we even are in denial about things that happen to ourselves.

This is how to take the responsibility off of the victims. It shouldn't take an abused person being able to be strong enough for there to even have a chance at justice.

Her work is immenselly important. I hope her team can accomplish more in court and stop hearing the type of responses she mentioned. It's heroic the research she is doing.

Ya know. I once had to describe my abuse in detail as a 16 yr pld girl to a room full of strange adults talking about being violated and sexual things about my body it was traumatizing feeling judged and feeling like i have to prove i was abused 3 years prior.. the woman i can barely remember her name, the prosecutor, made sure i wouldnt have to do it in court for real. They got him to plea guilty. She grabbed my shoulders and told me that itd be okay and the state is going to pick it up, and that i dont need to worry. People like sue who stand up for kids like i was or who need it most really move my soul. Thank you. So many kids have no voice. People aew awful and disgusting. Sad we need people like her. Much love. Cant imagine the awful things she has to see.

I am 79 years old and I got the best therapy and mental health care available in the years of 1983 until this day in 2023. I still have unwanted memories and thoughts about my abuses in childhood. My grandfather, my father and my brother all three sexually abused me. I tried to commute suicide at 13 and tried to tell my mother about the abuse but she threatened to send me to reform school for lying. After years of therapy I tried to tell my story again to my family. Mother, father and two brothers disowned me, left me out of their will and never contacted me again. I called several times over the years but no one wanted to hear from me. My heart breaks that I lost everyone in my family over the secrets we were forced to keep because we were so ashamed. My life has been blessed with a good husband and two lovely daughters. No one will ever know my pain that I hide to protect my family. I shared the truth and family and friends all gave me love and support. BUT THE PAIN AND SHAME NEVER STOPPED.

Great presentation. I also think it's crucial to regularly educate your children on what's appropriate for others to do with or to them and what is inappropriate, including accurate language to describe things that were hurtful, scary, or uncomfortable (e.g. Using anatomically correct vocabulary even with young children). These two things combined can 1) Increase the likelihood of your children remaining safe and 2) Reduce the likelihood that your child isn't able to communicate a situation accurately, thus leading to a situation being misconstrued & leading to a false accusation as opposed to an accusation of real abuse.

As someone who has CPTSD which causes severe anxiety and depression you learn crying is pointless. My parents left us with a male late teen sitter who used to come into the room i shared with my sister and exposed himself, I was 3. We moved but who knows what else he would have done. I then suffered over 30 years domestic abuse from my family, the NHS have offered me no help, many Gp's are useless. If you need help don't give up, you deserve happiness.

People like this lady are heroes. Saving innocent children from the real monsters of this world.

Another Factor why victims dont “cry enough”...: they have allready told the story in detail many times before trial and crying is often accumulated anxiety about revealing the truth to outsiders and the most explosive burst of tears are the release of the Holding back combined With the fear of the consequences might be Going through intarogations and testimonies With police and psycologists etc and confronting sitting in front of a judge and jury the fear seals up much of the tears and you get a victim who looks more embarased than hurt just because of the fear of finding out the World truly does not want to help or make things Right or make the World safe again

As someone who knows to not blindly trust the prosecutors perspective, I realize that the reasoning was probably something entirely different.

Dear Dr. Black -- Thank you for your work! As a 73-year-old woman who was sexually abused by her father, I can personally attest to the fact that this crime affects one throughout all of life. My mother didn't believe me -- or opted for reasons unknown to me -- to look the other way. While, back in that time period, the internet did not exist, my father took inappropriate photos of me which he shared with others. There was a variety of abuses. Years of feeling unjustified shame followed me through my life. It's hard to express how very much I appreciate your work, and I can only hope that your valuable contributions will result in many more arrests. Sending greetings to you from the US.

The psychic wounds you have both experienced are very real and in processing that trauma I hope you can come to a modicum of peace with yourselves knowning none of it was your faults...something even considered not possible by some pretty sick individuals who talk about seductive children. They consider their ideas somewhat intelligible when they are so naive and depraved on having reached their sick beliefs! Hoping justice for the crimes comitted against you finds you both satisfied one day.

Children shouldn’t have to give testimonies about their trauma. It’s re-traumatizing.

This was harrowing to listen to. Totally heartbreaking! Sue Black is outstanding! I really enjoy her lectures, and all the other programmes I've seen her in. Wonderful lady!

Saving victims from having to testify is enormous! This woman is a saint. This job must weigh heavily on her and her team.

Thirteen years for raping a two year old? Insane!

I think they should have a prison just for pedophiles. They should get life in prison with no parole! Sing-Sing , would be the perfect prison as they are away from society and have no chance of breaking out!

I was sitting on my 1st jury in a sexual abuse case and 10 out of 12 decided that a couple of minor details in memories from years earlier during a highly stressful abuse incident weren't consistent. All the defense had to do was insist that she because she couldn't remember the season when the abuse started meant her memory was faulty. I was truly traumatized.

Should have asked them if they remember what season it was when they lost their virginity, or the first time they drove a car, or when the season was when they failed their first test. I could go on. But there are huge milestones in everyone's life and I can only remember the answer to one or two of those questions confidently, I am sure there are better questions to prove the point but significant things happen constantly and the exact season, side note I still have trouble putting them and months in order as an adult, is so insane and infuriating.

you should also check lawyers, judges and cops for these marks...

I just hope that it didn't happen again to that girl who caught her "father". The first thing I thought is "did she have to continue living with him?".

She probably is still living with him,. If anything, he has more incentive to abuse her more because he got away with it in court.

The jury failed this girl, when there is science to prove what someone did, the emotional state of the victim is irrelevant, people can respond to trauma in a million different ways.

Well and forget about scientific evidence. HE FILMED IT. There is a VIDEO of this man messing with this teenager!!!!!!! They had a video of it. But because she didn't cry enough thay say it was consensual. Which still doesn't matter! BECAUSE SHE WAS TO YOUNG TO GIVE CONSENT!!!!!!

I love what she said about having a social responsibility. I was molested by my sister and brother and my mom called me a liar. I pray I have a different mother in the next life.

Our society doesn't want to acknowledge the scale of this, because it is uncomfortable. We need to, collectively, acknowledge this happens and stand against it with fury.

Honestly. I don’t know a single woman in my life that hasn’t been sexually assaulted, most of them when they were kids by older men. It’s absolutely horrific and no one talks about how incredibly common and normalized it’s become.

Honestly more people probably clicked on it this way, so I'm not mad about it. We all should see this.

"Her mother didn't believe her" is the most gut wrenching combination of words. A woman like that needs to be trialed as well because as much as I love my husband I WOULD NEVER doubt my child telling mw something like that. NEVER and my husband is an ANGEL. But as a mother... For Gods sake.

This woman, and people like her, who use all means capable including groundbreaking forensics and technology to protect society’s most vulnerable members, it’s children, are absolute heroes. I genuinely cannot imagine the will power, resolve and strength it must take to do the kind of work they do- to be exposed to and witness all of that depravity and degeneracy and to not be broken by it, to stand up and challenge it and give your all to root out that evil from this world- It’s more than commendable.

Some people have been so damaged that they literally can't cry and wish they could.

The jury were provided enough evidence, it doesn’t matter if the child cried or not. What if it was them or their kids?

I had depression after having a baby. While I was depressed I never cried, I felt angry. Not all of us feel or react the same.

Well said. I have the same problem after losing my child. I never cry. “It does not help” The little girl knows that already. The survival behaviour is possibly to go along with the action of the adult. A lack of empathy is sweeping the world and this jury sure shows it.

Like I cried the first week but nowadays when I think about him I am grateful for the good times we had and whenever he appears in my dreams I also become very happy. It kinda doesnt seem normal to me but I am not sad anymore.

👏👏Perfect Thank you While my child was in NICU I was furious. Not at a person. Not at god. Just angry he was sick(incurable) and in there. I was angry at the situation. Every next nurse judging me based on 5 minute increments of time spent. Just dumb.

I did not know that about Skype. Interesting info. This woman is one off the most humble people I have heard lecture. So knowledgable and eloquent in her presentations.

I am a super fan girl of Sue Black. She is a scientist of such integrity. A wonderful presentation. Two thumbs up.

"When you are a victim of child sexual abuse... You're not a victim for one day, you're a victim for the rest of your life..." I know that resonates with SO MANY of us...
