What a neat gift. It's what we call a mason jar with a handle. Regular mason jars - without the handle - are used for preserving vegetables and fruits. They are usually clear, but yours has been frosted. So pretty.

Yes, a mason jar lid and ring should work fine. In Southern states in America many people didn't have much money in the past. Drinking out of mason jars was common beacauce it could have many uses. Now people still drink out of mason jars as a nod to their region's culture and history. The jars now can have handles and be colored etc. to be fancier. People use them because they want to, not because they need to. Many people drink sweet ice tea or lemonade from them. In the past "moonshine", illegal whiskey, was sold in mason jars too. Mason jars have a strong history in the South. Enjoy yours. That a nice.

They are in the style of the Mason Jar , very popular here for pickles and jam making , that is why it looks as if it can have a lid. We used Mason jars for drinking when I was young. Such a wonderful gift idea.

It is a fad here too in Montreal. The lids can be purchased separately, and are standard sizes. The Mason jar was invented for preserving and pickling, the thickness of the glass and the pop the lid makes, make it appropriate for long-term preserving. There is a way of extracting the air with heat to make food safe for a long period,when kept in the dark basement.
