The Asda one has 29% marinated beef. Of that, 90% is beef. 90% of 29 is 26.1%. So the proper comparison is 22% for Aldi and 26.1% for Asda.

So 10% went on the marination in the ASDA slice. That's a lot. When I marinate pork or beef slices for stir frying I sprinkle the powder from Aldi (Chinese, BBQ or Peri Peri), but it's only about a tablespoon.

Cheers Gareth, they don’t seem too bad, as supermarket processed pasties go like. I think that gloopy cloying texture you’re describing is partly too much palm oil, partly too much thickener, both are commonly overused to bulk out fillings these days and I find it coats my tongue and puts me right off, so I think I’d go with Asda for this one, mate.

In my experience shopping in Aldi. Lidl and Tesco, when Tesco say Aldi price matched, they match the price but the quality is not as good. Can't compare with Asda because I don't buy much there but most of the major supermarkets have Aldi price match now.
@user-se7es6uc8v
Ай бұрын
I think the Aldi price match is a bit of a gimmick; my local Tesco which isn't a big one, must have a couple of hundred products in the meat aisle and four of them are Aldi price matched. I would be amazed if Aldi customers abandoned them because of this. I use Lidl because it's nearby - literally across the road from Tesco - and I notice they mimic the Tesco stock quite closely, then have a lot of world food on top. I was in the Tesco today and noticed they have started mimicking the Lidl 'eridanous' Greek food, even down to the packaging. I was tempted to try the gyros but the packet was tiny and seven quid!

Yeah I was a bit disappointed when I had the Aldi ones recently. They were OK, satisfied my hunger but just felt they were a bit bland. The Asda ones I've had too and they're decent considering the price but I just prefer the Tesco ones which I think comes down to a probable slight difference in seasoning more than anything. However you still can't beat the taste of a Greggs, but even there I've noticed a dip in the amount of chunks of beef in them likely due to cost cutting.

It would have been interesting to have weighed each pasty after baking as well, to see if there was a difference compared to their pre-baked weight, due to any evaporation of added water. There is often quite a lot of added water in processed meats and other foods. It’s also worth knowing that ASDA’s and most other superstores’ meat is often halal. Aldi and Lidl don’t sell any halal meat.

Yeah, I like to start my pies off in the microwave, get them warm, and then finish then off in the air fryer. The pastry gets the right texture and the pie is done in half the time compared to using the oven.

@@elvisburgerking8675 The filling in the pies is pretty reasonable. It's just that the thickener in the sauce is a bit squidgy.
I enjoy this kind of comparison, where one supermarket price matches another, but do they quality match as well? 🙂 Really can't beat a home made steak pie, though!
Well with me being a pie eater from the spiritual home of pies Wigan , I like to make my home made pies I know what's going into them and generous fillings to .. ohhh my mouth is watering just talking about it . Good review Gareth as always. Keep it up pal.

Lovely !! You do these really well !! Thanks !

Yes, from experience of late I would buy the Asda product. Been really disappointed by any frozen chicken type products from Aldi lately. They're chilled section is usually OK
In my experience shopping in Aldi. Lidl and Tesco, when Tesco say Aldi price matched, they match the price but the quality is not as good. Can't compare with Asda because I don't buy much there but most of the major supermarkets have Aldi price match now.
@user-se7es6uc8v

Great news, it has to be Asda! i am biased as i work there. I still think that they are expensive from all shops, they must cost a fraction of the selling price to make. One tip, keep an eye on the reduced section, these don't sell that well.

Gaz, just as a side note.... I tried the Mayflower Curry mix that you use and it was 100% spot on! I recommend it to anyone in the UK who wants a medium spicy curry that's simple to make. It says "extra hot" on the box, but it's quite mild compared to my Indian housemate who makes his own curry... which is about 10x as hot, but delicious all the same. Again, thank you my brother!

i remember minced beef and onion slices 4 for a £1 and it wasn't that long ago and they weren't too bad either you couldn't find much if any beef in them just beef flavoured gravy as were 4 cheese & onion slices for £1 with cheese flavored sauce and no actual cheese.
I just had a Tesco's version of these for lunch today. Not at all gloopy and there were definitely chunks of beef/steak. Very nice actually. Sorry not sure of the price but probably more than 88p I'm guessing.
I have had the Aldi ones and they were OK. Certainly would never eat them cold.

Hi Gareth, I am not a fan of these BUT I did try the Greggs sausage rolls in Iceland and they were pretty impressive. On another note we had that Sainsbury's Slow Cooked Hickory Smoked BBQ box at the weekend you reviewed and it was incredible. I did however reduce the cooking temp and increased the cooking time a lot and it turned out so tender and a lot of the fat has rendered down. Amazing. Will do that again soon.

Thanks for another honest review 💜💜💜

I love dipping steak slices in some tomato sauce 😋. It goes well together!
Hope you're well👏. You're spot on Gareth, exactly as you said. Asda one for flavour all day long

Asda do their own brand frozen sausage rolls (4 for about £1.10?).....the nicest homebake sausage rolls I've ever had.
Yeah I'm spot on and breaking fine. I could use one of them things right now. Look in the fridge, and what do I see? Salad!! You know, if those items had any mushrooms, you'd have a hand-held beef Wellington.
The Asda pie looks the best I could not eat a cold pie Well i could but choose not to If I make a purchase at a popular pastry chain naming no names Greggs most of their pies are served cold unless you ask them to pop it the microvave or oven Some pies i buy from shops often say Not suitable for microwve cooking but i put them in my microvave they can be a little soggy but otherwise ok i prefer them hot than cold and being claggy
I'll be sure to inform the Aldi CEO 😂

Packet of ready puff pastry £1.60 (enough for 4 slices) 1/2 LB braising steak £2 braise steak for 45 mins in gravy figure out the rest At least this way you aren't getting what looks like dog food.
With 7% more beef content the ASDA slice was bound to taste better. Also, even though I usually dislike the autopsy part, on this occasion the ASDA slice visibly contained small chunks of meat, whereas in the Aldi slice the contents were minced beef, not chunks.
If i go down to morrisons @ right time you can get some bargains but more often than not they don't mark them down enough or the choice is minimal usually a pastie flavour you've never heard of. Sometimes the greedy asians would fill their trolleys with chickens, I'm alright jack.sometimes you strike lucky 3pence a loaf of bread or 8pence for cheese&onion pastie some products aren't worth touching like nuggets chips or chicken drumsticks, nuked, dry, rock hard.though i once got a massive tub of colslaw for 5pence..the vulgers usually beat mevto the offers plus even morrisons are tight buggers these days, they stopped reducing the whole chickens for 50pence because they said people weren't buying them because theyvsaidvthe customers were deliberately waiting for the 50 pence chickens.
That's why 8 out of 10 prefer Whiskers 👍
I have tried many of these steak pies from various suppliers and have consistently been put off by chewy meat, gristle or fat,I always now tend to go for the mince and onion pies now less chance of there being any cheap meat in them, but again everyone to their own.🤔
I have to agree on this one mate nice one😂
Asda ones used to be £1.20 not that long ago
Asda ones are a naughtiness Wigan kebabs i made a couple days ago 😁👍🇬🇧♥️
Now that you have compared Asda and Aldi, how about a Greggs/Asda play off. I know the price will be much higher for Greggs, but it would be interesting none the less. I notice that the Greggs ones at Iceland cost £3 for two. Wowsers! However they have the same beef content at 29% but weigh a little less at 140g per slice frozen.

Love these autopsies. Did you not train as a pathologist in an earlier life? These pies are poor in my opinion and made essentially of flour and water. That sticky white glue was GLOY in my day but I am older than you.Anyway, you have a clear result.
