Surprise steam and More on a Long Day Around Carlisle!
Train Action whilst WCML shut south of Carlisle
Black 5 stands in for Tangmere
Jet-A flow to Prestwick
Midland Pullman Ayr to Blackpool
25 May 24
Bank Holiday Engineering Possessions at Southwaite and Shap meant that the West Coast Main Line was closed between Oxenholme and Carlisle. Any charters heading south were run over the Settle & Carlisle line.
Up first thing to see the Midland Pullman head from Newton on Ayr to Blackpool North via Hellifield.
TPE and Avanti were running shuttles between Carlisle and Edinburgh as the WCML north of Carstairs towards Glasgow was also closed for Engineering Possessions.
Also recorded was half of the Doncaster (actually Grain) to Prestwick Airport aviation fuel working. This is a relatively new traffic flow through Carlisle.
At the station the queues were in place all day as passengers from Edinburgh waited for their Rail Replacement buses south to Preston.
At the expected time the West Coast Northern Belle 'Settle & Carlisle Steam Special' charter from Darlington via Newcastle arrived. Soon afterwards I went to see the steam loco arrive from Carnforth via Hellifield. We had expected Tangmere - but joy - a Black 5 arrived. Apparently some maintenance is needed on Tangmere. It proceeded to Currock Junction on the Goods Lines before reversing into the station and into High Wapping Sidings to take water.
Rather than see the Northern Belle depart I took the train with friends to Appleby. Here the Northern Belle stopped (which I'd forgotten) to dispose of kitchen waste - a regular occurrence!
In the evening I went north of the Yard again to see te Midland Pullman heading back to Newton on Ayr. I had hoped to see the return working of the Aviation Fuel tanks but the weather precluded that. However I did catch an Engineer's train from Carstairs head into Carlisle Network Yard.

Who needs a Pacific when a "go anywhere, do anything", 10-wheeler Black 5 (complete with masculine-sounding whistle) can do the job perfectly well?

Thanks for looking in! Yes there are often two or three steam trains in per week especially over the summer. Apart from a few weeks in winter, hardly a week goes by without one.

It was a lovely day but 2 hours would be a long wait there with nothing to do. Nice they had to use a Black 5. I wondered how long Tangmere would last with all the runs it has been doing recently

0:52 - 1:10 beautifully illustrates that golf influenced song 'Straight Down The Middle'. Is that Black 5 the only preserved loco with non-standard smokebox plates? Did you realise that the service back from Appleby was a palindrome? I wonder how many waiting to go South would have been quicker to take Northern to Leeds and then TPE to Manchester?

Thanks! When lines are closed for engineering I dont think logic oor speed of travel comes into the operator's thinking. The Scottish Region numberplate comes, I assume, from that loco having been used on the Jacobite in the past.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways Now that's intriguing. I was 20 when steam ended in Scotland and right to the end, my area's locos had standard white on black smokebox plates. So I'm wondering where this 'Scottish Region' coloured numberplate originated. I do not believe it to be historic.

@@roboftherock I don't have info to hand and would have to ask around, but my understanding was that certain shed did put blue front numberplates on locos.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways Les, I found a book in my local library 'Stanier Black Five Locomotives'. There are pictures of 44871 pre- and post-preservation. All show the stadard white-on-black smokebox plates. Your earlier assumption may well be right. If that's the case then WRC have created a false and non-heritage visual in a heritage railway setting.
