Surprise! Foal Born Outside 15 Days Early
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Trashy foaled very unexpectedly in her paddock on May 6th, 2024. She was due to get her Foal Alert in the next day and hadn’t shown any of her usual signs of being close to foaling. Watch the nerve wracking birth and the wild events that took place after the fact (including her colt going in a wild adventure).

Thank you for sharing this. I watched it in its entirety. Fascinating to see the "group" dynamics in the paddock. It was interesting to watch the herd dynamics and how the young colt knew to stay back and the other mare was not completely convinced that was Trashy’s foal and they had a moment - and then the concerning part was when the foal wiggled out of the paddock - poor Trashy was about to lose her mind - thankfully all was well

I never missed any of the births till this one because she had this outside so thank you very much for putting up this video even though it was hectically traumatizing for everybody,The sound with you talking keep stopping, she had a cowboy farm delivery -not a spa deal with 5 star quality like the rest, that in itself was something, then mister curious George gets into a full-fledged action packed movie not a regular birth video, a nail biter😮, this has been some birthing for Trashy and the baby, she doesn't even get to go through normal process although she started out with that carries the placenta around with her while frantically trying to get her kid back in there with her, Gambit an Emmy were on toes at what's going on, I thought she's going to have chiropractic problems in the neck as much as she was stressing and panicking,-I can for sure bet you that curious George doesn't get so curious again Emmy is probably thinking good God please let me have that baby inside when it's ready I do not want to go through this, I feel for every freaking one of them out there they all did a one heck of a job⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Interesting to see the wild herd instict kick in here. One mare standing guard over the other mare who is incapacitated from foaling. In the wild, you see this behaviour quite often. Having studied the wild horses in Alberta, the one mare who has foaled, another mare will guard her until the placenta passes and the foal is steadier on its feet, ready to run with its mother in the herd. Very interesting to see that here, in the domestic setting. Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦

Can the stallions be dangerous to the newborn colts in the wild?
@jenniferlehman326
20 күн бұрын
@HaleyTylertoo Not if they are their own colts. If it's a new stallion that has taken over the herd, he will kill all foals to bring the mares in heat so they can have his colts and fillies. That's in a wild herd situation, however. I hope this answered your question satisfactorily. Best Regards, from a Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦

This was unfortunately the “Perfect Storm!” No fault of anyone but the outcome was positive because Trashy is a seasoned mare. If you watch closely when her labor started she was very anxious prior to foaling. Was her anxiety because she was transitioning from stage one to stage two?? Not sure but fear or stress can also bring on a quick, early labor. She wasn’t calling out to her foal when he was on the other side of the fence because she didn’t want to bring attention to him by inviting predators since she had no ability to protect him.

@@nancyridings835 Non of the previous videos made show any sign of negative "intervention". What you saw was necessary aiding of mares and foals to ensure a safe birth and a healthy mare and foal. People in the stalls are oftentimes the mares or foals owners and don't cause any distress.

@@dancingpuffin8936 i disagree. "Intervention" in an emergency is necessary. Every mare foaling isn't an emergency. Its interfering with the mare bonding with her foal. We went back to watch the video reply to get timelines (when he was born, if he nursed, if he passed his meconium etc) and found that he went on quite the adventure!
Yep , I was waiting for that to happen 😅

Why wasn't anyone out there at this time? So close to foaling???? I don't understand why she wasnt checked on first thing? To make matters worse, IT'S RAINING! AUGHHHH!!!

Because this mare was over two weeks before her due date - had showed no signs of foaling the night before. And knowing this mares history she had never gone early like this (she is more likely to go late) and she always drips milk before foaling - this mare did none of that. She was due to get her foal alert in the next day and start being brought into the stall at night.

Every pregnancy is different and you shouldn’t base your judgement on the laws of averages:(. The lesson here should be when a mare is two weeks out from foaling, she should be inside every night/ or monitored closely during the day.
When did the placenta drop?

We gave her oxytocin when she came in the stall and it dropped ten minutes later.
OMG! 😳

Yes the baby that was “born without interference” certainly could have done with some interference to make sure he stayed in the paddock hmmmmm 🙄
Awwwwww.. poor mama! She prolly wondering why she didn't make the cut for the more posh delivery service, lolz ,❤️🩹🎠🎂✨

Poor mama is right! We were devastated when we found them - but so relieved everyone was okay.
Why was the gate left open?

This is a man gate - it is always open and made just for people to fit through in the event of an emergency and you need to get in or out of the paddock quickly.
This was amazing to watch, how fast she got up when Emmy came over, how she wouldn't let Emmy too close but sad to see how panicked she was when the colt was outside the gate and she couldn't get to him. Gambit knew enough to stay away. 😄I'm glad everything turned out well in the end. Did you see if the colt was able to get colostrom in the timelines you set? I appreciate all the wonderful care you give to all your animals

Once we had them in the stall and he was nursing we went back and watched the cams to get timelines figured out. Luckily even with his hour long adventure we got them in the barn before the 3 hour mark and all timelines were passed. We did have to give Trashy some oxytocin to help her pass the placenta but otherwise all was good. :)
It’s like the equestrian version of Ferris Buehlers day off….poor Trashy girl
