Surprise Antique Mall Stop Makes Vintage Shopping Excitement!

This road is amazing! One listed estate sale brought me here, but three more sales and now an unexpected antique mall is turning the highway into Independence, Missouri an antique and vintage picker's paradise.
Elsie Bett's Antique Mall is a revelation that makes us stop the van before we get to Independence Temple, a Mormon holy site that was our original destination. The sign claims antiques, vintage, retro and repurposed ware dwell inside...but will we find things we can afford to buy and bring to our serious collectors?
The answer quickly proves to be yes! Pieces of 1920s Czech jewelry, Murano glass earrings, a scarce pair of cafe ware shakers and a Tiffin satin compote in a color few people (including the dealer) realize glows under a black light all prove well priced for what they are, and they're coming with me to my next antique show.
For a suburban antique center, this place is refreshingly filled with real vintage and antiques, which makes it fun to see the whole place. We compare newer Satsuma cats to old, see a stove from an unusual maker, and comb through displays of everything from Big Little Books to 1950s lettuce ware in this fun and fortuitous stop! We'll remember this place in our future antiquing excursions in the Kansas City area.

I worked at a pediatric group in Memphis. Two of the doctors were getting up in years and a lot of the equipment we had reflected that. Don’t get me wrong, it was all perfectly functional! Anyway, we had those canisters for gauze etc. One day I accidentally knocked the cotton ball canister off the counter and it broke! My doctor I worked with was in a room steps away and he said, “what was that?” I answered, cotton balls to which he replied, “that did not sound like cotton balls!!” Of course it didn’t, but it gave us a good laugh!! Thanks for the memory❣️

I sure hated missing the live feed again, but enjoyed the replay very much! The name of the store reminded me of Elsie, the cow. She had a bell around her neck. When I was a little girl, my second cousin had a pink, Elsie, the cow with a veil around her neck, and I was in it enamored by her. I have never seen another one.

George, things from the 90's are vintage now. I know what you mean in reference to the phone but it's been 20+ years since the 90's so they can label as vintage. I am specific about age on my vintage items if I know it but not everyone bothers. The cards of buttons were really well priced, I would have grabbed a card or 2. I have a real weakness for buttons, some are such works of art. This was a really nice shop. Oh, that afghan looked like it was made from a "mile a minute" pattern. Those stripe are quick to crochet and then crochet together. Really big in the 70's/80's.

Love the D. F. Haynes and Son Pitcher. Based on a quick bit of research it was made in Baltimore, Maryland. I recently picked up some of their pieces that advertise the Leisy Brewing Company from Peoria Ill circa 1905. They are also Egyptian themed.

I remember retro used to mean vintage (At least that's what I remember from the very early 2000s) and then vintage came around and they started calling vintage looking new stuff retro. The oval table at 6:44 had marquetry vs parquetry. I see marquetry as organic designs and parquetry (Think of parquet flooring.) as geometric designs. It's funny that we know asbestos is bad for our lungs, but have you ever breathed in fiberglass insulation batting? 7:40 It's kind of the elephant in the room but it's still highly sold and used. (If I were a millionaire I'd use a safer alternative, but like always, healthy is always more expensive.

We built our house in 1982. My husband and I did most of the work ourselves, except for the framing in. We laid the fiberglass insulation in our attic in the winter time. The coat I wore while we installed it had to be thrown away. To this day, I can just look at fiberglass insulation and break out into an itch !

Good evening, George! That Haynes pitcher, with the Egyptian theme, really caught my eye. I always wanted a Warwick tankard set with the monks on it. I like old handkerchiefs, but I'm really picky about the patterns on them. Those Czech jewelry pieces are beauties. There were a lot of smalls there that would be fun to sort through. Hidi, George, your audio is usually at a sound level that is strain and stress free! This upload was not, unfortunately. Your device or equipment may have changed or not at the usual setting, but whatever the cause, it’s too bad because your KZread presentations are usually heard on my nearly new iPad Pro with comfort and ease. Don’t be concerned, You’ll have to do a lot worse than have low sound for me to fail to listen to everything that you broadcast! However, if you can check your sound recording in some way and improve on it, it would be appreciated. Now, to something besides constructive criticism: I love how you strategize as you thrift, or shop! I follow along with you through the shop or mall spaces, as the case may be, and learn something every time. Thank you, my friend George, for your frankness and down to earth approach to shopping for vintage and the antique. ❤🎉❤🎉❤
