I had a Right hip replacement surgery 8 weeks ago today,.I am not impressed with the information about recovery times, I had read all those posts about how people can ski, fly and so everything a few weeks after. WELl, my experience has been totally different, pain was terrible first three weeks, started to improve, Moved from a walker after 6 weeks on to one crutch. Was really worried would never walk again, the doctors a s surgeons should advise can be a slow process and nothing going wrong just some people take longer to get healed. Please don't panic if you are not feeling the same as some of these patients. I am in bed today very sore as tried to walk on my own yesterday, still can't am hoping by few more weeks will feel better. Mentally it does a number on your head. Good luck everyone including me.

Cathy Lincoln I hope you’re feeling better! I agree with your comments, there are a lot of factors that determine the recovery time after hip replacement including which approach the surgeon used. I had my right hip done 1 1/2 years ago, and my left hip 9 days ago. It’s weird because I’m worrying that I still have pain but you’ve helped me realize I need to be more patient. You’re so right about it doing a number on you mentally! 🙃 Stay well!

hi i so agree with your comments,hearing how people can fly etc or even ride a horse after hip surgery,good for them i had mine 7 weeks ago and slowly improving still some pain in groin area but will be patient until such times as i can walk again with out frames or crutches or stick,have read many people say it can take up to a year to get back to normality and i am more inclined to believe that version of recovery,wish you all the best with your recovery

Hi cathy nice to hear from you,im not back on a horse yet (hehe)but managing the kitchen and bathroom,just feeling a bit of pain in groin area when putting full weight on the op leg, 8 weeks like yours is no length to get over a serious op, in my opinion anyway, i have read lots of posts where it has taken even a year to be fully fit againwhich i believe is probobly more like it timewise, i was very fit before this op but when i went to pick my grandson up one sunday we were so pleased to see each other He ran toward me arms outstretched and as i caught him i fell back so it was a fluk accident filled with love what can i say. Time heals but i find even the down feeling not getting out is not a good feeling, so even that part of this whole shock will take time to heal besides the opp itself. Thank you to all. I had my right hip replacement 13 weeks ago and have been feeling very down as every time I go for a walk, the next day my leg very wobbly and sore. I do the exercises the physio recommends but she is pushing me to go crutch free and I don’t feel confident enough for this to happen. I did try 2 weeks ago but the following week my leg felt it would let me down and it did once but luckily I wasn’t out in the street so no damage. Thank you all for helping me to realise there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi Sonya please don't give up your crutch it you don't feel safe, I am 5 months post op and same as you some days feel good other days feel hip letting me down but this week totally different, feel can manage without it, have it in the car for safety net. You will know when it's ok, go with your feeling.

This video doesn't tell me about Recovery Times. That is the information I am seeking.

I had anterior hip replacement 5 weeks ago. My doctor gave me no precautions. He did say listen to your body. I'm so glad I did it I feel so much better.

Had full hip surgery one month ago. Doing ok. I suggest listen to your surgeon and therapist and avoid being inundated with doubtful wisdom on u-tube.

Hi everyone. I had my first hip done when i was 65, the 2nd when i was 70. Definitely slower recovery the 2nd time, but things moving ahead nicely with time. I am over 6 months now and still have some flexibility issues, but no pain or soreness, but continue to improve each day. Keep moving and take your time. Be patient and careful.

I am 70 years old have been waiting a year the cartlidge my hip has worn away completely i only have pain when I put weight on it despite being on strong pain killers and walking with a crutch I am finally having my op 7th September have been reading all the comments on people's experiences after the op and to be honest I am terrified of both the op and how I'm going to manage all the restrictions when I come home (I live on my own) my daughter keeps telling me how easy it is as her boss has 80 year old dad who is having no problems and needed no help(guess thats her hint not to ask her) when he came home. Have just checked if she will be able to pick me up when I am ready to come home her response was im not waiting around i am going out that night! (I said I hope to come home sunday) she's going on holiday on the Monday so will have to ask hospital to arrange transport if I come out then it just hope and pray everything goes right and I don't have any problems

Surgery must be about now. @@J.G.817 I'm same predicament - told too complex for Consultant at small hospital...needs well stocked Theatre with all possible needs to be to hand...now have to find alternative so recommends welcome...the pain ia awful and can barely walk. Walker or crutches - and still not seen by GP Surgery - only referred on when self referred to Physio and Xray taken...revealing bone on bone and worst she'd ever seen! As you say...no-one seems to care - and as I live alone too dismissed as they know I'll need help afterwards - and told I'd be in hospital for some time...not a 3 day job! In despair now...to say the least. Searching for help!

I had THP about 9 wks ago. I walk without walker, or cane but I. Still have some stiffness little pain going up and down stairs. Do your physical therapy faithfully. Don't overdo it . Be patient with yourself.

I had a hip replacement 4 weeks ago. The groin pain I suffered with for 5 months preop was horrible, at least an 8 with every step. Post OP, the pain was a 6/7. I am feeling great at 4 weeks now. I even have to restrict weight bearing on my surgical leg to 25% because my femur was fractured during surgery. I will use a Walker at least 2 more weeks. I get PT at home.

Im on day 11 of anterior hip replacement. First 3 days sucked hard. Days 4-10 I was just achy all the time. Today I think I’ve turned a corner. Today I had a 6 hour window with little to no pain. I’ve been doing my exercises and walking to the letter. Don’t be fooled you are getting this surgery because you are at your limit of pain, movement, impact on your lifestyle. It hurts your gonna walk through Hell and come out better off on the other side. I used a Walker days 1-4 and have been using a cane day 5 to present. I even bought a replica Jurassic Park Amber mosquito cane topper. I’m such a nerd lol. Yes it’s going to hurt but I’ve noticed the pain drop off significantly in less then 2 weeks. Here’s to the future being pain free or at least tolerable. I was pretty bad limping after 8 years of hip injections. This is my experience at day 11 after anterior hip replacement and I’m sticking to it. Remember no guts no glory. Feel well everyone.

I'm six weeks post-op Anterior THR. I'm still sore, but my flexibility is slowly improving. I have arthritis in my knee, so I just had a cortisone shot. Hopefully, this will help my recovery. I'm doing PT & working out at the gym.

debbie allen. I have 2 friends who have both had both of their hips done with no problems.

On Monday 8/5/23 I'm having a full hip replacement and looking forward to pain free hip.

Just had mine on Tuesday 9 May so far so good thigh has been sore but apart from that pain is bearable walking with 2 crutches and doing exercises without going overboard.

Had total hip replacement next morning as the physios came to get me out of bed it dislocated never ever had pain like it had another op to try and rectify it ..not successful few days later I had another op where he put new stuff in ..that was three weeks ago im recovering well but am frightened of moving in case of another dislocation im in shock 😢

Take your time with your rehab. Always speak to your surgeon about your limitations and precautions to avoid another hip dislocation.

I have had this same experience through 5 iut if 6 hip replacements,they take longer to heal with each one and the pain is awful . Physical therapy is essential and after one of my surgerys my surgeon ordered heated pool therapy once the incision is fully healed . I did everything right and i still keep having hip replacements,i think i am done after this hip which will be number 6 .I don't know whats going on why i cand get my hip right ,the pain is exhausting,energy level is low . I will hopefully have help when i get home ,people are working busy with their lives to be able to help me come thru .my husband was with me 3 of my surgeries,he passed away and its been really hard .i had 1 successful surgery that lasted 14 years and i had my life back ut was great ,i have had the wrong size hip 2 times ,the hip that last the longest was a customized hip .

What's the limit for the number of hip replacements 🥺? You've been through a lot! You're scaring me off of my pending surgery.

Had both hips replaced , left 4 yrs ago took for ever to heal, had right hip replaced 2 weeks ago, already walking without even a cane. Had the same surgeon for both. Why the difference who knows. I'm dumb founded between the two surgeries. I still have pain in my left hip, but it's tendinitis.

The difference could be in the approach of the surgeon. It's likely he did differently on the 2nd hip. How is your rehab coming along?

I had THR inmy meft hip on May 23. 6 weeks today but am still using a walker. Doctor sUd need ine fir first 2 weeks but therapist still has not said to use the cane instead. Maybe because my operated leg was an inch and half shorter ans the dictor legthened it to the right length. It feli a mike longer the first time I stood on both feet after surgery and the nurse saud it could take 3 months until I don't notice it. I had walked with wLjer firvseveral years before surgery, not putting weight on my left leg and when standing in my bThroom noticed when I had both feet on the floor my right knee was bent, so I knew the keft leg was shorter but not so much. I do use my cane when going into a store to shop and then use the shopping cart or an electric rider cart when the store has one. Is nice to be able to walk on my operated leg in the store. I told the therapist I did use my cane when shopping to go into a store and she is now wirking with me to use my cane. I am inno rush now because I have bad bakance and want to be safe when walking without a walker. Getting there slowly.

my doctor says I need hip replacement surgery. I'm walking with a limp now, so I know I should get it done, but I'm scared to do it. I've heard many horror stories of surgery gone wrong

Lou there's a 98% percentage of success I'm due in may 17 and I hear a lot of people say it's not as bad for the first few weeks and then again everybody is different

The hard pain lasted for 2 weeks w me. After that greatly reduced. Work the physical therapy best you can. 😊

I am scared with each surgery,and i have had 5 hip replacements on my right side ,i don't have alit of faith .i had 1 surgery last 14 years it was the best ,same dr did the next surgery and it only last me 2 years ,got my hip done again before a year was up my femur is loose so guess what i am a victim again ,in the beginning of my 1 hip replacement it was the wrong size ,2 years later another hip surgery and dr broke off a drill bit in my hip ,said it wouldn't hurt anything so it was left in for several years .Sorry to sound negative but this is my journal of hips .If done right hip replacements are great they give you your life back .i am hoping this next one is my last one .

@@debbiechadwick861 i did all of my physical therapy,with every surgery,i believe in it .this last hip when surgeon got in there there was alot of metallosis and bone ,tissue damage .now the femur loose . I am not feeling good about this ..ty for your reply.

I had my bilateral hip replacement 6 months ago. I still feel stiffness in my hips esp my left hip and walk with a limp. Is this normal? I am exercising/rehabbing every day. Feels like I am never going to recover. X rays reveal nothing is wrong with the implants.

@@MartinBraunton Hello Martin. Have you seen a Physical Therapist in an outpatient setting? Likely you have some mechanics in your gait that they can look at and then determine if it is a musculoskeletal issue or if you are compensating some how.

No I have not seen anyone bar the surgeon - we meet every 2-3 months - and the Personal Trainer who has a specialism in helping people who are recovering from injury. The right hip is pain free but the left hip is taking longer. I am doing a lot of rehab on my hips - each day I use weights for hip abductions. The left hip is quite stiff and movement is still not as fluent as I would like. I also walk 5 kms a day due to my work.

@@MartinBraunton You should try doing exercises in the pool. Waist deep first then progress towards your abdomen. Then do specific exercises like walking forward, backward, side to side, knee raises, calf raises, etc. The resistance from the pool helps to strength muscle all around your hip joint capsule. If you keep a consistent regime should notice a difference within 2-3 weeks conservatively.

On day 4 here.. Anterior hip replacement. Some minor swelling and pain. Vitals are normal. Able to walk unaided, but still using the cane to be careful. Used the walker for first days for balance mostly. Only taking acetaminophen. I wouldn't advise this for most people. Able to take normal showers. Days 1-3 are the worst. Day 2 was worst for me, but bearable. Sleeping better now with no pain, compared to before with osteoarthritis. The exercises are important. A raised toilet seat is necessary and a leg lifter to make getting in and out of bed easier.

I am 68. I am not f****** elderly! I had an anterior replacement. I was walking within three hours, home in five hours. Three days later, I was using one stick. After a week I was walking unaided. After ten days I was happy to drive. After twelve, I was in my pool. After a month, I'd forgotten I had surgery. Next month, I'm doing the other hip. Everyone is different.

Hello Ashwini, It's better to take the advice of your surgeon. Because she probably has sutures or staples is the reason he is recommending not for her to sleep on one side. If you can maybe she can sleep with pillows under her hip for comfort. When she goes back to her next visit then should ask when it would be okay for her to sleep on her side.

You should have a follow up appointment with your doctor. X-ray will show if the implant is stable.

😢i am on my 5th hip replacement,last hip was a year ago , surgeon opted not to replace my femur because it was well fixed,a year later it is loose ,i wonder if i can wait awhile because i am worried that my body isn't ready and i am 61.What do you think?

Posterior and Anterior approach are the most commonly used by Surgeons in U.S

I am 69 years old in perfect health, and not over weight. I had to have a total hip replacement five months ago due to being involved in an accident. The first four weeks were total misery, after that things started to get slowly better. I am still in pain and discomfort but not to bad. My physiotherapist tells me it can be up to a year before before full recovery. That is my experience of my hip replacement.

Am here asking for agood Samaritan who can sponsor my hip replacement surgery here in Uganda worthy 7000$ am in deep pain due to abullet that stack in my hip please am bagging you

Very poor presentation! Nothing about recovery time. Very lame generalised explanations. Not aided by any video, illustrations, sample pics or anything. Normally I'd just leave and move on but this was so bad I felt I must comment. I hope you can see this as constructive criticism and do better.
