Welcome to The Frey Life daily vlogs! We are Peter & Mary, a married couple in our early 30's, showing the ups and downs of everyday life with #CysticFibrosis, a genetic lung disease that Mary was born with. In August 2019, Mary started a new CF medication that changed the trajectory of our future, and life has changed dramatically - including our son, Elijah, joining our family in December 2021. We also have an adorable standard poodle, Oliver, and a hairless sphynx cat, Harry. It's our hope that these videos can be an encouragement to to celebrate the little things in life and find joy amidst a world full of hard realities!

Oh my goodness. Mary coming out of this anaesthesia is so so life changing. No oxygen, talking without coughing and no nurses. Trikafta is game changing. And I just found out it has been added to a Government supported medication here in Australia. Such an awesome thing for the families with cystic fibrosis.

So glad to see Mary wake up from anesthesia without oxygen. It is a small thing, but also a huge thing! I got my port in almost the same place. The placement I like (minus the 1st week.) The tube over the collar bone is weird, but I got used to it. The first week was rough because it felt like it was pulling. No longer causes any problems.

Have one in the exact same place too. I was surprised she was put under though. I knew they usually gave you something to relax but certainly not general anesthesia. Did you? They couldn't get an IV in me and so I had the ENTIRE procedure done fully awake. Talk about AWFUL. I remember them cutting into my jugular, chest, etc.. If it hadn't been for the nurse, not sure I could've made it through without her. Also, I heard her say her husband accesses it. That never happens here either. I have to go to the hospital every time it needs accessed. Also, where she has it now is where I thought it was supposed to be if possible. Usually only do it elsewhere if there's an issue.

they put her under because of the removal of the old one...due to the nature of how long it had been in place and her history, they made that decision...she also had it place by a surgeon instead of an interventional radiologist...I had mine placed under conscious sedation..."twilight sleep"...I do remember it, but was sedated...@@srjwildcat3589

I had surgery twice in 2021. The first surgery my anaesthesia was rushed and I got stressed and “scarred” from that experience. The second surgery I told my doctors how I felt and that anaesthesia was so much better! It’s so important to have a grate team and to be on the same page

The sticky on your forehead is from what is called a BIS monitor, it monitors your brain waves under anaesthesia and is used to make sure you are under enough but not too far. Oh and I'm someone who enjoys the going under but if I have had an operation (as opposed to a scope) I tend to wake in extreme pain so that bit is no fun at all.

I had my last porth placement 10 years ago and I don't miss that feeling , it hurts a lot . Mine got infected after a year of IV treatment in hospital and I had 2 replacement but the third one didn't work and I needed it to come out . I will be forever grateful for that porth because before it my veins got so damage and I had needles in my arms, hands, neck , head and chest , once they put the porth it was a relief . Anesthesia has never been a problem for me, with my porth surgeries and 7 brain surgeries I reacted good , never felt nausea or sickness . I woke up and recovered good.

Just starting to discuss with my doctor on getting a new one. Around six months ago it had a nasty episode of possibility being infected or something, we really don’t know what happened but it has never been the same since. Hi Mary, It may sound crazy, but I love the feeling of anaesthesia. Especially the moment when you fall asleep. I'm glad I like it, I've already had more than 25 surgery's. 😅 Sometimes when they inject the propofol it hurts like crazy, just like you had. It happened to me twice. They gave me a bit more fentanyl iv to relax my veins and that helped a lot. I'm glad you have a new port! Hopefully you can have it for 11 years or more! Big hug from the Netherlands. 🤗 ❤

I've had a few ports by now and I do look forward to the anesthesia nap. I also look forward to just being put under so I'm no longer anxious. I've now had surgeries in 3 different hospitals since getting my port and all of them have put in a peripheral IV in for the anesthesia as they say they prefer to give anesthesia through a peripheral IV and not a central line. When I've had surgery while I have been admitted to the hospital and we were already using my port for treatments, they told me they would give me the initial induction medications (propofol) and then look around and get an IV so I didn't have to feel anything in case my veins decided to hide that day. I hope your recovery goes well and you get some time to take it easy! I know Peter will keep tabs on you and make sure you aren't doing too much!! Best of luck!

I'm glad your ports have worked for year. I had mine for a year and a half, and it was an awful experience. my surgeon messed up and it sat crooked. whenever I would have to access it, it would take the nurses at least 3 attempts to get it right. I talked with a new surgeon, and we decided that it was more pain than it was worth, and I had it removed July 2022.

I had another surgery in February 2023. I told the anesthesiologist about my December experience. I believe that he mixed saline with the propfol. It really helped. I hope that you don't need any additional surgeries, but if you do, please make sure that you convey what happened. I thought that my arm was going to burn after the December surgery. Hope that you heal quickly and this port gives you many good years.😮

I didn’t go under for the first port placement or the first replacement. I had light sedation but what they put in my vein, the medicine felt good, like it relaxed me a lot. So I felt them pushing and pulling but next time I’m putting the numbing cream so I don’t feel any lidocaine injections where they’ll make first cuts. I wasn’t given any ice packs either and they didn’t use a peripheral vein at all. It was outpatient at a drs office. He is amazing at that drs office. He put the second on a little above where the first one was. And changed it out to a different kind and it came with information about it. I’ve been doing my own port care at the end of my old one. I taught myself since no nurse would teach me and I changed infusion centers for my ocrevus infusions. And I love the new nurse! She’s amazing and I can watch movies while I have my long infusions every 6 months. I’ll be using 22 gauge port needles to make this one last longer. I’m protective of this new port. The incision is a little longer than the first one and sort of in the bra line so it’s irritating and still a little sore as it’s still healing but closed. It’s the size of a quarter now. I watched your port videos and another’s port videos along with printed instructions. I will be accessing to flush for the first time Monday. I’m nervous to access it for the first time ever lol but it’ll be ok. Do you like to just go under instead of light sedation and being awake for the procedure? But you rather sleep through it? I like the pain relief and sedation drugs that make me feel relaxed and pain free. I live with pain so having no pain for a brief while feels really good. But I’m so happy for you, yay new port! Here’s to 10+ years! 🎉and to mine too.

Your new port is in a similar place to mine! When I was supposed to get my port in they couldn't do it because my veins were so collapsed from dehydration. Instead they nicked my lung and I got a collapsed lung out of it. I ended up needing an ambulance medic to give me needle decompression and was taken to the ER. I needed a tube in my side to reinflate it. Several days in hospital.

Yeah. I cannot stand ANY sedation of any kind. Glad its different for you. I had my port placed the 23rd and it migrated to my under arm. No fun. Protocol hurts like no tomorrow through a normal lime. So glad you did so well. Here's to a quick and infection free recovery!

Congratulations on your new port Mary! Please show your scars in another video where the old port was and the new port is placed. Next time you need anesthesia through an IV,ask for numbing medicine first through the IV so it numbs the veins for the medicine to put you to sleep. Worked for me when I had a procedure in January of this year and my port was not behaving itself to be accessed,so I had an IV in my right forearm instead. Update on my port is that my mom accessed it last week and it worked just fine. Hope to have better luck in two weeks when I go in for my Entyvio infusion and two more weeks after that my colonoscopy procedure.

I've had anesthesia several times. Sometimes it feels fine and sometimes I feel like I am being totally squeezed or staticy. Weird description! I like it when my nurse holds my hand because if I feel like I am floating or being squeezed I would have something to hold onto. It helps with the scared panic!

Am enjoying the fact that the last time you had a port placed. You had Oillie there and you had use elevators. This one Oillie was able to stay home. You did all that walking without any help. That in self is a big win❤

I’m glad you finally got your port replaced Mary hopefully this one last a long time when Peter took out the old port in the bottle from the backpack I said new Christmas ornament when Mary said she feels better this time after surgery reminded me of how I felt after my last surgery back in 2016 I had a surgery to fix my shunt and after when I was waking up my throat hurt so bad for like a week after last year after waking up from my surgery I felt great my throat didn’t hurt my best guess is that it had something to do with a breathing tube but will never know
