For those who weren't around during this time, you've simply got NO idea how much fucking better it all was back then, techno was at it's purest, the crowds were at their least pretentious and the vibe was at it's most electric. Thank fucking God I surfed the wave of proper Techno.

You're so lucky! I was 12 at the time of this set, my thing then was hardcore/gabber. I think I know what you mean but there are still some nice gigs out there, with a good crowd that really comes to enjoy the music and party.

The Orbit was amazing. Started early finished early. The free bus from Leeds Uni. The massive queue for the cloakroom. The film projector visuals. The big balcony. The atmosphere. Room two. Still one of the best club nights I’ve been to.

Why does no one ever mention the sound system that's the only thing my uncle is clear as day about best sound system he's ever heard in a nightclub and hasn't witnessed a sound system to come close since must of been how it was soundproofed or sumat I've heard It was mental wish I was old enough to live it I love techno

I love the idea that while a tiny place like Morley slept they had no idea that the best techno djs in the world were in town, and people were travelling miles to go there......and I was lucky enough to live ten minutes from it

Proper timeless Techno young man ;-). I wasn't there for this set but I was there when he played at Orbit on NYE 1997. Top club, top DJ....

I witnessed the transition at Morley from Sasha in 92 through seven vath,Carl Cox,Jeff Mills,dj tanith, the list is endless friends. I feel blessed to have seen all the top djs in this genre. Funking av it. 🤗🤗

Yeah That’s The same as me bro. Early 91 to us all dancing to the same music all as one then all the uk top DJs started there jungleistic breakbeat crap and I saw cj bolland and Joey Beltram in 92 and I never looked back it was into 93 Sven vath Derek May Jeff Mills Lauren Garnier Tanith and Dave Angel Colin Dale & Favour. That was me techno forever. 🙌🤩🙌

Truly blessed the pinnacle in my eyes of clubbing, we had 1 of the best clubs and venues in the world at our doorstep . I had cousin's and enough friends to fill a boat in that club weekly it was our sanctuary without realizing what we had . Agree, made 100+ return trips of 110 miles to The Orbit from Liverpool during that time 95-99. Never been anywhere remotely as good before or since. The Orbit was truly a special place to be, absolutely loved it.

Saw surgeon @ the orbit a few times in 1996, claude young /surgeon was an absolute right night love this style and love his early stuff, filled my box with plenty of surgeon tunes, thanks for the upload.

i lived in the Orbit every Saturday night from around 93 to 97, even did a few TFIF's. Massive, friendly, loving, hugging fucking awesome crowd. Whether you was sledging or rushing on the dance floor, it was a great club. Retired mesen, but i now run to these. If you want some Techno get onto soundcloud, lots of old sets on there! Peace, Love and Unity..

I WAS lucky enough to be there............. The Orbit Morley was truly a Legendary Club (yeah yeah, i've been to the Hacienda, Heaven, phuture, shoom, Sankeys, Cream, Shelleys, Milwaukees, Busbees etc etc). It was that good we drove nearly 200 miles every Saturday night it was on! Seen Surgeon, Sven, CJ, Jeff, The Baron, Claude Young, The Advent, James Ruskin, Luke, etc etc all live, all in a club with only 800 Techno knowledgeables smashing it and hangin off the balcony.

Awesome, I've seen many of my Techno heroes too. One of the coolest was a 5 hour set of Chris Liebing and Speedy J for about 500 people (I guess).

Im just sat here, headphones on, bobbing to and fro, remembering the good old days at orbit. What a place. I went from late 1993 to 1998 - the glory days. Seen em all. Banging techno at its best. Greatest club ever IMO. Addidas t-shirt, shaved head, pummelling the air with my fists, sweaty as fuck. and weighing 130lbs. :)

Thanks for posting. I went to the Orbit several times during this era. Always liked the darker end of techno and the Surgeon made some of the best tunes to go insane by. But listening to this set, featuring as it does so many tracks used in Mills' Liquid Room set, reminds me why Jeff was the best techno DJ ever. Ok this set is mixed more tightly, sounds less slapdash, showcases individual tracks more obviously, and has all the crossfader and beat juggling touches...but still sounds flat compared to the first thirty minutes of Mills' set. Great set tho.

Doing that with vinyl is so much harder than software too. Thats why I argue he's better than Jeff Mills. His mixes are just so much smoother. It's like he studied Jeff Mills and then did it better.

There was a big fire in the adjacent building a couple of weeks ago, there's now talk of After Dark being pulled down. That'll be a sad day but it's stood empty for a few years now, somebody turned it into a restaurant which flopped after 12 months, it was odd having a meal on the top balcony where I used to be a sweaty mess every Saturday night

i remember (sort of !) seeing him at the orbit in 2001 or 02 and I've never heard a set like it ever since. favourite techno DJ for me.

Unfortunately I was only 13 wen this was made but started goin afterdark morley Orbit48 from 2000 wen i was 16 up until the day it closed every fortnight and the opposite week was goodtimes bangin club 💯 heard this set before seen him many times 🤪🎧

Amazing how much techno has changed since then. I was lucky enough to be going out in the 90s and got to hear this style developing right there and then. These days I still love techno, but have found its softened a lot in comparison to 20+ years ago. We had a harder style back then. What you hear these days was called experimental back then. Still, there's always good material to be found if the passion is kept alive.

Techno was never about merely being hard or soft... Few clubs and DJs in the late 90's represented the breadth of the music out there. In some ways things are healthier no on that front... Your comment about "experimental" is ill-informed.

ah the energy of mixing with vinyl :) crackin mix, and in many ways a nod to Jeff Mills Live at The Liquid Rooms (the cut in of Changes of Life at 02:09 for example) ok I'll stop trainspotting now ;)

Surgeon is a great artist etc, but I honestly can't every say I've enjoyed his DJ/live sets nearly as much as the ones I saw in the 90s

The first time he played the orbit I remember me and my mates concluding he was the best techno DJ we’d ever heard. Did what Jeff Mills did admittedly but even better. I remember believing that I actually heard him spin a track in (rather than out) and that it actually started playing in time with the track that was already playing.... May have been my state of mind and level of excitement at the tracks he was playing but I’d like to believe it was true...

Surgeon is awesome repping North of England . Saw him at Orbit 5 times at least . But he did copy Jeff Mills style hes playing a lot of the purposemaker tunes in thus mix. If I saw Surgeons name on an orbit flyer we always made a point I'd going. Jeff Mills best tho

Those Orbit times were priceless. Proud to have been a regular since 1994.. So much better that this apparent 'club' scene we have today unfortunately.. Amazing times. Amazing music.

Glad to see you like proper techno - i tried to look for modern stuff on the web and its just not techno lol.. its cheesy rubbish nowadays that does not deserve to have the word techno associated with it. The Afterdark Club in Morley, Leeds.. known as The Orbit (orbit48) was the best club i ever went to - crowd were ace, atmosphere was electric, never saw any trouble there and the music was always awesome - how this scene did not carry on i dont know.. commercial crap killed it off.. no-one cared what they looked like unlike todays plastic clubs.. I've never felt an atmosphere like it to this day..

I think I was at this night. I must say the hard techno nights weren't a patch on the old hard trance nights in around 93/94. especially the sven nights. as for the ridiculous argument beneath my comment. not every band in 1970 was led zeppelin, and not every band in 2015 is one direction. people remember their youth with nostalgia and sentiment so obviously 'their time' was better than anyone else's. no different from me preferring the hard trance orbit to the techno orbit. I've never seen anything like the sven 6 hour set in 93 (I think), I still suffer from the mental consequences of that night over 20 years ago.
