Surface Grinder Attachment for KMG and KMG-TX features and instructions

Ғылым және технология

This video demonstrates the parts, setup, features and usage of the Surface Grinder Attachment (SGA) for belt grinders from Beaumont Metal Works. Multiple applications of Beaumont's Surface Grinder Attachment in this video show the SGA components, assembly and mounting, how to dress the abrasive belt, how to dress the magnetic chuck, and how to install magnets in the SGA chuck, and how to install or adjust the dial indicator on the Surface Grinder Attachment for more accurate depth and thickness measurements. Specific tasks are narrated and presented including how to grind specific thicknesses of steel within 0.001"; the importance of adjusting the SGA knob before pulling the chuck across the abrasive belt; removing scales after heat treatment of steel; improving flatness of blades, knives or other workpieces; using roll pins for extra holding power on the magnetic chuck; and dealing with delicate or non-magnetic workpieces such as brass, wood or aluminum which require finishing with the SGA. Large damascus blocks of steel are shown in the video to be surface finished, squarely ground or otherwise trued up with the Surface Grinder Attachment. Blocks of steel damascus 1"x1", 2"x2" or even 2"x4" with a length up to 12" can fit on the 2.375" by 12" magnetic chuck for use with this Surface Grinder Attachment. Odd shapes are ground with Beaumont's Surface Grinder Attachment in this video, and a full symmetric taper is created using the built-in sine bar. As illustrated by this video, the sine bar double pin feature of the SGA may be useful for easily and exactly tapering knife tangs or finishing tapered tangs of knives with more speed, control, flatness and repeatability than has been possible with KMG and KMG-TX belt grinders without surface grinding capabilities. The video demonstrates surface grinder applications with both the special purpose, tri-helix high-performance surface grinding wheel from Beaumont Metal Works, and also a popular and more common 10 inch contact wheel. The Surface Grinder Attachment (SGA) works with the classic KMG and the KMG-TX belt grinders from Beaumont Metal Works, and can also be used with other 2x72 belt grinders which use 1-1/2" square tool arms. The video shows usage of the Surface Grinder Attachment in vertical mode for use on either the KMG grinder or the KMG-TX, and also usage in the horizontal mode on the KMG-TX belt grinder.
In the video, the Y-axis direction runs through the main body of the Surface Grinder Attachment and indicates the distance between the magnetic chuck and the abrasive belt. To accommodate thick or wide pieces of steel or to allow use of different surface grinding contact wheels, large changes in the Y-axis can be made by moving the controls and X-axis anchor into any of the nine different positions available on the main body of the SGA. Small adjustments to the Y-axis are made by turning the knurled, large comfort-grip SGA control knob. Turning the SGA control knob counter-clockwise moves the magnetic chuck closer to the abrasive belt. Turning the SGA control knob clockwise moves the magnetic chuck further away from the abrasive belt. The dial indicator is mounted on the main body of the Surface Grinder Attachment to measure small changes in the Y-axis. Travel distance of the dial indicator can be changed with the adjustable 2” long cup point stud included on the body of Beaumont’s Surface Grinder Attachment.
The X-axis direction of the SGA runs along the sliding arm and along the length of the magnetic chuck. The operator moves the magnetic chuck in the X-axis by holding the smooth aluminum handle of the arm and then manually pushing and pulling to move the arm and the chuck across the rotating abrasive belt for surface grinding.
For some grinding operations and when preparing or dressing the magnetic chuck for use, it is necessary to make adjustments in the Z-axis. The Z-axis is perpendicular to both the X-axis and Y-axis. The Z-axis direction is parallel with the center spindle of the surface grinding contact wheel and also the width of the magnetic chuck. As shown in the video, the operator uses the tracking control of the grinder to move the abrasive belt in the Z-axis from side-to-side across the width of the magnetic chuck.
Thank you for viewing this demonstration video of the Surface Grinder Attachment from Beaumont Metal Works.

Can this be set up to traverse across the belt rather than along the belt? This would be useful for grinding something wider than two inches.

Any way I can get some general dimensions to rig it to my BEE grinder?

The surface grinder attachment connect to the 1.5 inch square tool arm of the KMG and KMG-TX 2x72 belt grinders. The support plate for the unit attaches to the bottom of the tool arm, while the contact wheel spindle is on the top of the same tool arm. The tri-helix contact wheel is 3 inches wide (and 2.5 in diameter) with its edge starting a half inch away from the tool arm. Hopefully that helps!

Yes, this surface grinder attachment works very well on the classic KMG. It is designed for use on either the classic KMG or the KMG-TX.

How is this to use this with a non horizontal grinder?

It is designed to work with belt grinders in either vertical or horizontal mode. For vertical operation, such as on a classic KMG, rotate the base plate so that the magnetic chuck arm can move freely across the surface of the abrasive wheel. Chose and angle that is comfortable for use and also allows the chuck sufficient clearance past the wheel. This video shows one vertical setup. There are some other vertical setups shows on Beaumont's instagram posts @BeaumontMetalWorks and on our website BeaumontMetalWorks.com

Nice piece, very useful in a metal shop for quick dimensioning. On a side note Please wear a mask or a respirator. I cringed watching you breathe all that silica and metal dust dust. Nice work.

As a machinist with a critical eye for precision parts. THIS HAS FAR TOO MUCH SLOP IN ITS MOVEMENT. Just watch it flopping about even on light cuts. It's a good start but it needs at least two additional rollers on the back side of that slide to stop it from flopping about in it's track. That and nect time have the man that built it demo it not the CEO whom is cllearly not very mechanically inclined

I was thinking the same exact thing. There was way too much wiggle room with those rollers.

@@user-yc4op8sv8b I am also a machinist and this thing makes me cringe. Why not have a small aluminum bar - screwed down to the magnetic plate instead of pounding in some roll pins. Aluminum bar with 2 brass screws. The other thing he doesn't address is how to clean off the grinding dust. These guys needs to design a mag chuck that can be turned off, it's not rocket science. It's waaaaaay too expensive for what you get.

These type of belt surface grinders are not for ultra precision work. They are for FAST work such as grinding knife flats and flattening. Knives do not require Precision down to .0001 its a complete wast of time and you would never make any money. Theres a tool for every job.
