A Dust Collector For Your Metal Shop! The Knifemaker’s Dream Tool!

In this video I show off one of my favorite new tools. The Magna-Matic metal dust collector has changed the way I use my 2x72 grinders. This spark killing, 0.3 micron filtration dust collector can EAT sparks with no risk of fire and its amazing! USA Made, and reasonably priced. Im super happy to have stumbled across this machine and I think it can help lots of fabricators and makers work safer in their shop!

for collecting, how about one of those oil drain pans that are used for automotive lifts... that's a nice large metal cone. The hole is too small but I'm sure you can cut/enlarge that as required.

Cool unit. Try mounting a magnetic tool bar under the belt from the front bottom wheel to the back bottom wheel. It will catch a surprising amount of stray metal. 👍 😃

Another idea for a Simple fix- hang some magnets in baggies around your shop- ambient metal particles cling and you can simply turn the baggie inside out to toss- great passive collector

I have an extensive wood working shop, with a good sized dust collection system. However, I have a Baldor 12" bench grinder as well as a Burr King 760 2"x60" belt grinder. With this in mind i have been researching a dedicated system for the two grinders, and, up until I saw your video, I was imaging a good sized setup just for the two grinders. The Magna-Matic unit is exactly what I want in a very compact size. Thanks so much for the excellent review of this unit. I'm going to get on for my shop!

You’ve sold me on it. This is exactly what I need. I was just looking at a huge Baileigh system that was likely massive overkill. $2500 and it’s 220. I already have so many 220 tools, I really didn’t want to add another. Thanks for this.

Really needs a better filter in it. That "MERV 13" filter is MERV 13 for about a minute with the dust load you are throwing at it off a grinder. Useful for catching large particulate that would otherwise collect around the shop, but it''s not going to stop much of the small harmful particles that are going to stay in suspension in the air. (someone who makes a significant chunk of the filter media used in industrial dust collectors)

Thanks for the input. Could you provide some source for information or recommend a filter + fan that should be used as a base for a mobile dust collector like the one shown in the video? I think the guy is generally right thou that ppe needs to be financially accessible otherwise people just wont use it. I guess sometimes a 80/20 solution is the way for amateurs that are not exposed 5 days of the week.

I got the model with the top mounted spark arrestor and just chopped off a bunch of railroad spikes. It's awesome taking all the sparks from cutting and still sucked all the fine dust from grinding the rust off with a flap wheel. Now I just need to fabricate a better opening than the HVAC one I threw together

Hey Chris can we get an update on dust collector, please? Would love to know if it is still working out. Any issues with it so far. Also, if your grinder can tip horizontally, is it still able to collect the majority of the dust?

For using this collector for general shop and hobby tasks where you may be grinding small parts and not just lawnmower blades, this thing needs a grate or some other sort of trap on top of the input port to catch any small to medium parts that accidentally get dropped while grinding.. The way it is currently set up, small objects that get dropped (eg, you're grinding a bolt or fastener) may get mangled by that big impeller and medium sized objects may actually jam and cause damage to the part and or collector unit..

You can see it does have a bit of a grate in the 4” port that would stop anything larger but you make a good point about having something at the top in case you drop anything into the duct.

nice review, and a good alternative to a fully ducted system. what I don't like is that the unit is right in your feet. I stand right up to the platen when I am flat grinding. If I go this route, I will need to offset the unit to the side. Ill have to calculate how much cfm I will lose with two elbows in the path, and how effective that will be

How does it do with wood dust? I’d love to only shell out for one collector and use it for both sides of the shop. I assume I’d need to clean it out before switching back and forth (to avoid risk of fire), but would it even function as a sawdust collector?

If a bucket of water doesn't require assisted ventilation, why does a metal box with a funneled inlet? Seems you could be just as successful by mounting the tapered duct to your platen so it encompasses the bottom roller such that sparks only have 1 option, and just port the outlet of that to a catch box with air vents.

If you can't figure out why a bucket of water without forced air wouldn't work nearly as well, you should probably take a minute to think about it. Or you could ask someone who works with grinders and tools like these to explain it to you.

@@littlejackalo5326 whoa, cool your jets Scooter. I never claimed a a bucket of water would work 'as well' as an over glorified vacuum cleaner, I just stated that if the user mounts the register box to the platen, they'd probably get a similar result as they would had they spent the big bucks on the Binford 600 Spark Sucker.
