I’ve been using a 6th gen iPad (A10 SoC, 9.7 inches) and I’m really happy with it so far. I’d like to have stereo speakers but oh well. About the Surface, I’ve read it was kinda slow but seeing it on video... I wasn’t expecting so much of a difference, the Lightroom test was criminal. PS: which game are you playing at 15:50?

@@HenriZwols I have the 8 GB Surface Go 1. That machine is quite snappy for what it is. It also comes with an SSD instead of EMMC. This comparison is only on the surface level. If it is comparing on price-point, then fair enough. But an in-depth review this isn't. I will have to look elsewhere to learn more about the machine and if I want to upgrade. As an apropos, I managed to connect my Surface Go 1 to my 5120x1440 screen. It can drive that but I wouldn't call that practical. I will say that if you don't need the Surface Go for Windows and only want to do Netflix then an iPad probably is the better choice. The price for the keyboard for the Go is ridiculous. It costs as much as the one for the Android Transformer tablets by Asus and those included USB ports and an additional battery.

Some of the reviews for this don't make sense. This kzread.infoUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA works as well as any power strip I've used. Plug in what you need, be sensible about it & keep it movin' The construction is plastic but it's a sturdy piece. It has a single toggle switch & the swivel jacks are useful as well. Plugged in next to Tripp Lite Isobar takes some of these reviews with a pinch of sumthin' - does what it says & functions properly.Had for about a month. Perfect no complaints will update if anything changes.

The way they do these reviews leaves me speechless, sometimes. I have been using the first Surface Go 8GB 128GB for three years. I have done two years of Grad School and currently writing my PhD dissertation on it. I use it as only device. I have the full Adobe package installed, can use Zotero for papers, watch films all the time, taking notes. Never had an issue. I can install handbrake and play with my films, do editing. This is real life. I only complain about the battery. Other than that, it is so refreshing to go to class and do anything you need to do with such a lightweight device. Then you see people running around with adapters. Those are Mac people.

I have both a old Ipad & got a surface go 2, yes the Ipad is faster but to use it as a laptop replacement apple has to make the OS better, there is so many user case issues probs with that.. Surface being slow- still the easy way to connect a mouse, external devices file system makes it a better laptop replacement.. but YES as only a tablet Ipad is the best!!

In fairness the ipad pro is a much higher end model then if you include the keyboard case you’re going into actual laptop territory. I’ve nothing against iPads, I’m using the 12.9 inch with the magic keyboard. It’s only a comparison to the surface pro which is way better than the surface go.

Well thats not really fair, as the Surface Go and the iPad Pro is not in the same class. Why didnt you just go for the Surface Pro from the start if you later went for the iPad Pro? The Surface Go is aimed at the standard iPad, while the Surface Pro is aimed at the iPad Pro.

Great comparison! Only thing I would add is the Microsoft pen is much more accurate and lag free with their native apps like OneNote and chromium edge browser. Only thing I would say that wasn’t a fair comparison, otherwise, great video!

Thank you for this great comparison video. I have the Surface Go 2 with the Intel m3 processor and 128 GB SSD, 8GB RAM. The Surface Go2 is a lot better with the m3 processor and I think its worth spending more for the speed , more RAM and faster and bigger hard drive. I also have the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9" and I totally agree with your video on what each device is for depending on the user and what it is used for. The camera and mic audio is superior to the iPad but really love the iPad's speakers.

Thanks for the video. I'm a windows user and recently bought an iPad air 2 to try out a hardware that was specifically for iOS, and to use a DJ app with it. I had nothing but setbacks. Firstly my music wasn't playable ( yes I downloaded music), but previous iTunes purchases could not be played either. I even tried a USB stick and the warning was that I had insufficient power to get it to work. To prove a point, I dug up my old Chuwi tablet with Android 5.0. plugged in my USB and was able to transfer FLAC and MP3 files to its music folder. I downloaded a similar DJ app and got it to work without the hardware. Yes it froze at times, but it worked. iPad is too restrictive, which is why they don't get bugs etc. With apple products, you do have to be up to date, and constantly catch-up. Whereas with windows, I can dig up an old bit of hardware and still get it to work. The drivers still get carried over regardless of what operating system is being used. Cheers

On the surface go you get full MS office suite, you can do true multitasking and you can play AAA games using streaming services such as google stadia or ps now

Apple devices and games (not including mobile games that can run on pretty much any smartphone) don't go along well anyways, just look at MacOS game support for steam.

Are you guys going to compare the new Dell XPS 15" / 17" with the MacBook Pro 16"?

I would be interested to see if the new Edge browser improves the speedometer results considering the one you are using is about to be retired. On my PC, I went from a score of 39.1 to 79.4.

I like managing the storage, files and music on my iPhone... Ironically I can only do this on the surface using iTunes or other transfer services or programmes! 🤔

How about using the go2 as a main computer for students through the 4 years. With mostly presentation, office, note writing and light videos editting? Is the screen too small for that?

Just got mine and im very happy with it, using it with magic keyboard and magic mouse... never opened my imac since lol...

If you are thinking about a upgrade the iPad pro is the way to go!

I love your videos, Max! So I'm a small KZreadr and am wondering if you have any suggestions on the best budget laptop OR desktop in 2020 that is powerful enough to handle regular (not too rigorous) 4k video editing as well as is reputable for longevity. Some specs that may help are 32 GB of RAM, 512 GB memory, decent processor and GPU. Anything suggestions are welcome!

Max, I love your thorough reviews but you really need to test the Surface Go 2 M3. I have the high end version and I'm blown away by how capable it is. It will load full Lightroom CC with 38,000 photo library in 7 seconds. Try exporting 50+ large JPGs from Lightroom and upload them to OneDrive. The iPad just cannot do it. The GO can. It makes it the perfect light travel computer for me. I even installed SketchUP and I'm blown away by how smoothly it can manipulate large models.

Air is like a mid range.

So as a student wanting to have a tablet / light computer to take notes digitally and use for shcool work, Ipad seems much better. Do you have a recommendation

While the iPad 7th gen ships with the slow charger, it can use a 30 watt charger with a USB C to lighting cable. Charge times really aren't an issue.

Can you do a comparison btw SurfaceGo2 and Ipad Air 3???

When you compared the mic the surface go two I didn’t have to turn up the volume but the iPad I did

As a artist, it's iPad all the way for me. The Procreate program along with the Apple Pencil, (and even on just the iPad 7) is an incredible experience!

Lanna's Missing Link That’s a tough call... I just have the iPad 7 (32 gig) which is the cheapest iPad and Procreate works great! (So do all the other art programs I use). But it is only a 10.2” screen. If you want more screen space, you’d have to go with the Air (which is only slightly larger at 10.5) or the Pro models. The larger sizes and additional memory also allow for more layers. So if you work with a LOT of layers you might want to consider a larger size, even though they are more expensive. I would LOVE to get a 12.9” iPad just for the extra screen space. You could look into older models (or refurbished) to save money. I think pretty much all the older models still handle Procreate and the Apple Pencil.

People don't give that stand enough credit. It transforms the versatility of a tablet, even if you don't have the keyboard attachment.

You have to remember, the Surface Go is not a photo editor for things like Lightroom. The iPad isn't either, but it's version is the stripped down app, not the full-fledged version on the Surface Go 2.

Very interesting. Thank you for the comparison. The biggest issue which shuts down the Surface is eco-system. First off - apps. Secondly - iPad + AppleWatch + iPhone + MacBook = one heck of an amazing intertwinement of technology! Done deal! BUT.... I will say that the Surface bested the iPad several times!

The picture of the menu which you took with the Surface Go 2 is brighter than the one with the iPad. The Surface Go 2 microphone is significantly louder than the iPad microphone.

I have both. Just use them for basic note taking and web browsing. The Surface with its built in stand is so much better for lounging around on the couch staying where you place it. The iPad with no stand and rounded edge slips and falls over making it so much more annoying.

If I had to choose I would possible gravitate towards the Go but for some reason I like the bezels on the iPad. Most likey would go with Lenovo duet though

Max, iPadOS is a light version, so to speak, of macOS while the Go is running a full fledged OS. Very limited support for multitasking, right? Felt you forgot to mention that, also that you can't plug HDMI and USB on the Lightning connector, so no "desktop mode".

Brandon Horn Lightning can't output video and data at the same time because there's no pin for video on lightning. The adapter gets the video from the high speed data lanes on the Lightning connector, the same ones used for USB. You either get USB or HDMI, not both.

Maybe dolby audio is turned off. Turn it on in realtek audio console. Happened to me once when I did a fresh install of windows.

awesome comparison for form factor and hardware. However one is an x86 computer that runs full windows. the other is not much different that a cellphone with a large screen.

Good review. 👍 You did forget to mention the Surface Pen has a eraser that works really well. I've got a 1st gen Go w/ the Gold processor and only 4GB or ram, and it doesn't behave anywhere near as slow as when you were maximizing/minimizing in the review. It is Win10 Pro, but I can't imagine that would explain the difference.

Surface go 2 for me. I was not able to open two excel files side by side. Had to close one out to open the next. Really inconvenient when trying to copy info from one cell to another.
