Surface Agitation: Putting My Claim to The Test

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I was challenged to turn my spray bar downward so there was no surface agitation at all in my tanks. I was told my fish would be gasping at the surface within hours. Take a look at a 10 hour experiment.

Booyah! Even though I don't keep the same type of fish you do - I always watch your videos because they are chocked full of information all fish keepers/lovers need! Awesome...

I have kept tanks for a long time now with all types of fresh water fish ... I have run many experiments myself on this same thing .... I have found that most fish don't even notice in a well established tank, however the amount of activity is decreased due to lack of gas exchange, I know that Dan uses power heads at the bottom of his tank which helps greatly when then there is no surface agitation, so yea all in all I find my fish seem 2 be more active with more surface moment but it's not necessary in most cases

where is the next video and what happened the next day? I currently have a set up of a canister filter discharging into an undergravel filter (reverse flow through substrate) so my flow of water is vertical in the water column and the surface has NO agitation. Curious of your results in these tests.

your plants provide O2 , so that helps...you can get away with less surface agitation, your gouramis breath at the surface, so take them out of the assessment, Where do you propose that gas exchange takes place if not at the surface? It has to happen somewhere? You dense surface biofilm is also not optimal, My fish are much more active in high flow, and higher surface agitation situations. (reflecting higher respiratory and metabolic rates vs slow conservatory rates in lower dissolved oxygen waters)...It may be that it takes time to see differences , may be seen in the form of redox potential and respiratory fxn over longer periods, may be subtle and hard to see as animals are very resilient, and don’t show changes , and may be able to adapt to widely varying parameters in the tank...I realize this is a 1 year old thread just now so probably no one cares what i say...:) . I do enjoy your videos, I am a biologist and love aquariums and experimentation with closed systems. So many variables based on bioload , temp, lighting, Ph, etc......

I love how you say night :) btw how do plants know day to night indoors? if I had them in a small fish tank w no added lights and my home lights will be on all night. Onli 1 fishy.

The plants can "tell" night from day by whether or not they are photosynthesizing. Plants don't need a rest period though, so it really doesn't matter. (your fish should be on a normal day/night cycle though)

I have my output on my flowerhorn tank facing up rippling the surface. he knocked it off once and he was really stressed although not gasping at the surface, until about 20 minutes after I put the output facing up. on the other hand I have had many other tanks with lighter bio loads with no surface agitation that have been fine. I would think with a larger bio load the fish and the bacteria could delete oxygen faster. I was thinking the whole time with all your plants it would have no effect. even at night. I can't imagine they use more oxygen at night then the produce in the day. another great video Dan I'll be watching tomorrow to see the end results

One point I will be making clear is that each tank, and it's inhabitants, are unique. there are many factors that determine how much agitation is needed.

Dan very interesting, although I agree with the challenger the perceived wisdom in the hobby/industry is that surface agitation is necessary for gas exchange? Maybe its over a longer period?

I have to agree with Dan. I kept Oscars in a 120 gallon tank for 3 years with 0 suffice agitation. I purposely pointed my filter spray bar down to hit the bottom of the tank to kick up any debris on the bottom so the filter would be able to suck up anything that would get stuck under rocks, and driftwood. it was very effective in cleaning the tank, but not at all for the suffice. I also didn't keep a skimmer at the time, due to Oscars being tank wreckers, skimmers are also a form of suffice agitation, and aids in gas exchange. so in the end, it was very calm on the surface, and my fish were as healthy as can be, and never gasped at the top for air.

Put the spray bar above the water line and point it straight in down. That is what I do. My fish don't gasp ever.

I run a sump and the whole surface agitation thing is a non issue for me, the top of my tank is dead calm except for where the water flows into the whear. If you run a sump this whole surface agitation thing becomes something you don't even think about and I run CO2. unless I overdose the CO2 aeration is not a problem. Been doing it like this for decades and have never had fish gasping at the top of my tank, I have had many other problems but gasping fish has never been one of them. I'm 100% a sump guy for a lot of reasons. Sumps take a lot of the headaches out of this hobby.

At 3:10 your tiger barbs are flashing a little too much, especially one of them that flashed a few times in a row. YOu might have some gill parasites.

Okay now i hate to take sides but what the hell is wrong with that guy? You just show what would happen. You don't need a bunch of surfes agitation just some circulation in the tank. Did this guy or how ever even try the experiment there self? Well those fish looked fine the Neons were swiming where they always swim, all of them. It's go to know this, thanks.
