Surf Insight : Back foot positioning....Get the Sweet Spot

Work on placing your foot in the "sweet spot" of any board is vital. Without that back foot positioning we never get the best turns and control from the boards we ride. Good video and hugely important for the transition between beginner and intermediate levels. I used to always land with my back foot (natural footer) slightly too far forward, and, after watching myself during popup, realised that instead of popping up with my hands flat on the deck, I was gripping the rails. This kind of made me pull myself forward on the board, and caused the board to be pushed backwards while I was popping up, which then caused my back foot to land slightly too far forward. That small change in hand positioning fixed a huge amount of problems, helped me land my back foot more easily at the sweet spot between the 3 fins, and turning became a lot easier. So this tip is extremely important if you want to move past just riding down the green wave, to being able to maneuver on it.

    ah thats classic .. as I think the next video is about rail holding on take off. Its a super common mistake and one that can really hold you back. Iv'e even had top comp surfers still doing it with one hand or the other and with them its took ages to get rid of it. You technically hit the nail right on the head as to the result of rail holding and it also causes the inability to rotate in the jump movement and leaves the front oft way out of position, Nothing like a good rail hold on a backside pig dog into a barrel but for most that way down the line . Thats for that feed back .. really cool

    Hey Tim, hi & a big thank you from Oz. Your videos are elite. I’m mid 50’s, fit for my age and been using the chicken wing method to pop up the last 8 years after a long layoff. I had not been able to master the one movement pop up. Watched a number of other “so called expert videos” but your videos are by far the best out there. The pop up video with the German lady has been a light bulb moment. Having the hands further back, using the palms to explode up & especially swing the feet up have transformed my surfing. The “fulcrum effect”! And it’s easy to practice on the ground & you won’t stub your back toe if you flick your feet up. Amazing. Being able to jump up(like when I was younger!) has allowed me to tackle fast breaking waves & transformed my surfing. Chicken wing is ok for fat(eg Bells) or slower breaking waves but the one motion pop up is so much better. Merry Xmas & many thanks. Phil from Victoria, Australia P.s. what is the diameter & name of those balance cushions?

    ah .. where did I go .. well I was over weight quite a bit at 85K and should be about 70 to 75 K for my frame .. After 18 months of Sri Lanka .. not enough protein and the first 8 months doing a lot of building work in the tropical heat thats the result.. but I found I was swimming and surfing lots better without the weight and am putting on quite a few kilos now as I am in Europe for a while .. so if I get to 70 ish I'm staying there ! It would be great to have you in Sri Lanka and the coaching we have there is really new and for sure groundbreaking ...and works super well.

    Thank you for another fantastic instructional video. Hoping to graduate to surfing soon. Been practicing hard on my paddleboarding skills. I found that it has helped me develop my balance a lot more than falling tons of times on waves using a surfboard. Also, moving around and getting confidence on the water has also improved significantly using a paddleboard. Maybe do a video using a paddleboard as a method to improve balance and footwork? Thanks again.

    Thanks David. Learning on a larger board in the early days, months, years ( depend how much you get to surf ) should be done on larger boards for sure. So tell me how wide and long is your paddle board ? As they can be quite narrow at time I know. Length is great to have and I'm interested in the width of the paddle board your using . For me most good learning board that have width should be around 21" to 22"1/2 wide but of course that depends on the height and weight too and that affect the thickness too. So when you tell me the wide your paddle board is tell me your stats re height weight too please David

    Another top video mate. Thanks. One question though, where should my front foot sit on the board?

  • @SurfInsight

    @SurfInsight

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks so much for that . Really for most good truning positions then we need to have the foot in the tail pad but if you figure the front foot should go in line where the hands were before pop up you will have it just about right .. hope that helps and we hope you get to join us sometime at www.surfschoolsrilanka.com/ or www.surfschoolanzarote.com/ but meanwhile happy surfing !

    Thanks for this. So you always want to pop up with yr back foot back as described, and accelerate not by moving feet forward but by shifting hips forward? How can you gauge when you’re in the correct position?

  • @SurfInsight

    @SurfInsight

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for that and yes we all land with our back foot forward of the best turing position and then we need to adjust it back for our best turns. But you do need to sometimes use footwork to accelerate and this very much depends on the size of board you ride . But all boards will also benefit from throwing the hips forward to help with speed. Hope that helps we hope you get to join us sometime at www.surfschoolsrilanka.com/ or www.surfschoolanzarote.com
