SURF FISHING for SHARKS!! The Spinning Reels We Use, Daiwa BG, Fin-nor offshore and Quantum Cabo

Фильм және анимация

This is a look at the Spinning Reels we use when Surf Fishing for sharks we use the Daiwa BG, Fin-nor Offshore and Quantum Cabo reels. We only use spinning reels when surf fishing for the sharks and our go to reel for the last 2 years has been the Daiwa BG 8000 which has caught some nice sharks on our channel, We also caught a nice Blacktip shark with the Daiwa BG 5000. We also use the Fin-Nor Offshore 7500 and Offshore 5500, My wife got a 7'2" lemon shark with the Fin-nor 7500 and a 6'3" Spinner Shark and a 100lb Blacktip Shark with the Fin-Nor offshore 5500. We have a Quantum Cabo 80 that has caught some HUGE!! Stingrays including one on our channel, and some smaller sharks. The Quantum Cabo 120 is our BIG SHARK REEL!! But IMO the Daiwa BG 8000 is the best value out there for a spinning reel to go Surf Fishing for the SHARKS!! Thanks for Watching!!
DAIWA BG 8000 - 500yds 65lb Sufix 832 ( will hold 520yds )
DAIWA BG 8000 - 480yds 60lb Seaguar Threadlock + 75yds 65lb Sufix 832

    The Penn 10500 series of reels are definitely monster sized and at 43oz would definitely be a challenge to use for a casting reel, But for a yak spinning reel would be pretty impressive!! Thanks for Watching!!

    I can throw it a long way with a Penn Carnage II 12 ft Heavy surf rod. I recently got a Cabo 50 for snook and tarpon with baits. Great feeling reels for sure. I started shark fishing with the BG 6500 and did well on it also.

    Using the slammer 3 10500 as a casting reel with that massive line capacity and the really good drag should definitely catch any shark you hook while casting baits out!!!

    So you’d recommend the Diawa over the fin nor generally based on line lay something that can be adjusted by switching braid brands or in some cases adding or taking away a washer when your shark fishing? You’d sacrifice 2/3 drag capability for a maybe 10yard further cast when targeting sharks? I dont know maybe it’s just but I would not. The drag knob should be the way it is on the fin nor due to the outrageous drag capabilities. I think In theory they probably figured if you hook a big fish like a shark in this case and he’s running hard then you’d probably rather want an extra turn or two on your knob to reduce risk of over tightening and breaking off due to instant pressure rather then easing it in a little more to required drag but I understand some people reason wanting a quicker tighten that’s just my take on it. Both good reels and the fin nor are sealed up well. I don’t think you’d want any reel submerged in salt water no matter how much it’s sealed up but I’ve fished both those reels and pretty safe to say the diawas would probably fail under a load before the fin nor you can feel the difference in say heavy duty ness . I feel like you said more good things about the fin nor than the diawa in the sense of shark fishing lol. Loved the video just giving you my thoughts

    Alan Hawke in his review actually said the BG 8000 achieved 30lbs of drag easily but recommended a working max drag of 26lb for the reel, It did not fail in any way this was just his recommended working max drag Enjoy your videos. How are the BG 5000/8000 holding up. Any issues ? , I have 3/4/5000 BG no issues so far they are working well, considering an 8000 for tuna up to 100lb ( not sure I can cope with the physical size of it popping never actually held a BG 8000

    The BG reels are holding up fine and we have caught some nice Blacktips and a big beach Tarpon with our 2 BG 8000. We also have a big Blacktip with the BG 5000 along with another big beach Tarpon that I fought for 45 minutes before the hook pulled at the edge of the surf. The BG 8000 had no problem with the big Tarpon, but the BG 5000 was definitely overmatched in the long fight with a 6ft Tarpon! While the BG 8000 might work for popping for 100lb Tuna that's probably kinda pushing the limits of the reel, Thanks for Watching!!

    Does the shark usually make one long run then slowly come in?

  • @koreanfishingwife8766

    @koreanfishingwife8766

    4 жыл бұрын

    Generally speaking, Yes the bigger blacktips over 5-1/2 ft will make runs around 100yds or more and the big 6ft or bigger blacktips will run 150yds or more on the first run. If they jump a lot especially if they cartwheel 8-10ft out of the water they use up energy and won’t be able to run as much line out with the tighter drag, but yes if you can get past the first run only the biggest blacktips will make a shorter 2nd run, And some sharks fight much harder than others when you turn them and begin to bring them in Thanks Again for Watching!!

    Once you get your fresh bait,does the tide matter?

  • @koreanfishingwife8766

    @koreanfishingwife8766

    Definitely high tide and within 2-3 hours either side depending on the height of the tide cycle and allows you to cast right from edge of the surf in the first cut which could be 6ft deep which is more than enough for the big blacktips which will sometimes be in water as shallow as 4ft!!

    Is 350 yd of 50lb enough for catching blacktips? I have a shimano spheros sw 8000 spooled with 300 yd of 40lb and I almost got spooled while fishing for red drum. I was using mono for leader material so I got cut off. I want to upgrade the spool to a 10000 for that extra yardage and start using wire leader incase a shark picks up my bait. I'm not targeting any sharks just dont like the fact that they swim off with a hook in their jaw if I use mono leaders

  • @koreanfishingwife8766

    @koreanfishingwife8766

    Yes, 350 yds of 50lb braid is plenty for a big Blacktip. If your bait is less than 75 yds out and you quickly tighten down the drag! The Shimano Spheros sw reels are very good reels, Probably the best reel in the $200 price range. Thanks for Watching!!

    The Daiwa BG reels are very good reels but they have only 1 seal on one side of the Handle and that’s it!! They are very susceptible to water intrusion and your reel getting dunked and actually submerged ☹️ at the jetty was definitely a worst case scenario ☹️ Hopefully you were able to save the Reel?

    The New Cabo’s are more expensive than the Fin-nor and the Cabo 120 has been discontinued but the Cabo 80 is still available and would be my choice over the Fin-nor 5500, for a larger size reel definitely the Cabo 120 if you could find one? If not the Fin-nor 7500 or even the 9500 but at 39oz it is very heavy!! But unless you have handled a Fin-nor I would not buy one online because compared to the BG it is a clunky/heavy reel,but it has more drag power and overall strength than the BG and is cheaper than the Cabo’s and the Fin-nor 7500 is a good mix of weight 32oz and line capacity 450yds 65lb braid. Thanks for watching !! I give long responses but if you have any questions you can ask me!!

    Spinfisher 7500 enough for 150lb black tips

  • @koreanfishingwife8766

    @koreanfishingwife8766

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hooking up with a true 150lb Blacktip which would most likely be around 78 inches would probably spool a reel of that size. While the reel may hold 300yds of 65lb braid you would probably only have around 225yds on the spool when the bait was picked up and would be at a big disadvantage before the fight even started!! However my Biggest Blacktip was a Fat 78 inch pig that weighed over 150lb and I could hardly drag it up the beach even with my tail rope.The reel was a old Quantum Boca 70 with 285yds of 65lb braid that the shark hit with 40yds of line in the water and probably didn't even run 100yds of line out!! The rod was our 11' Tica XH before I cut the 7 inches off the butt, So with a lesser rod things might have been different. The short answer is while anything is possible I would not want to hook a blacktip anywhere close to that size with that reel, But with a powerful rod at least you have a chance!
