Mistakes found & Corrections:
- 4:33 laggy vibrato doesn't make a note unsupported or strained, but it definitely adds some tension, he was supporting.
- MinAh and LeeHyun weren't strained because of the lack of tension they were unsupported because the vocal folds weren't developed to hit those notes.
- BaekHyun and Suhyun weren't straining nor supported (falsetto is unsupported, but theirs were without tension)

A laryngeal vibrato does not automatically make a note unsupported. Support is a spectrum, it's not black or white. If a note has support 4:32, even if there is tension, there still may be support present. Even more so support than strain/tension. As for the low notes and notes throughout, unsupported notes and strained notes aren't the same thing. A note that's underdeveloped and not hit with proper technique may not necessarily be tense nor strained. An unsupported note can often be not developed, like many of the low notes. Like Lee Hyun and Minah weren't straining, even though they weren't supporting either.

KitsuneMale (KpopVocalAnalysis) I mean, you can't say fully supported to a relaxed low notes or a note using forced vibrato even if it has a great support. But yeah, you can say it is kind of supported lol.

I never said they were fully supported at all though. I said simply that an unsupported note is not automatically a strained note. Singing is a spectrum, there are degrees of support, development of the vocal cords, tension and types of all of them mixed together.

KitsuneMale (KpopVocalAnalysis) I actually said the same thing to someone else. (another comments) He's not that wrong to say the F4 isn't supported (because he's talking about full support) but he's not also right because he call it strain.

4:32 no that wrong , the vibrato was forced and unnatural but it doesn't equal strain/unsupport , a larynx vibrato add tension but it doesn't take away support keep that in mind also it can be noticed in a numbre of very strong vocalists like ( kyuhyun , junsu , haeri , YEONJI ... ect ) 8:08 head voice can become breathy without losing support take any head voice notes used by shannon recently everything is on the breathy side yet it supported same thing with ailee when she want to add effect

That laggy vibrato makes the F4 unsupported because it was way too much throat tension...Strain... Falsetto is never considered supported but it can be relaxed like BaekHyun did it

  • @BAZVOCALS

too much throat tension nahh that not throat tension that his uncontrollable vibrato but support is there ... calling it strain is a stretch you expect a tenor of his caliber to strain an F4? you linked matty analysis in this so i assume you read his profile, have you saw him say he strain because of his vibrato inside his supported range?

BAZISSINO 94 Forced vibrato blocks support... So yeah, it's like Demi Lovato, when she add larynx vibrato the note is unsupported. Even if it has support, it's not fully supported,(which means no tensions and relaxed) it could has diaphragmatic support but still has tensions.

Strain = any kind of tensions or high larynx or throatiness etc... So you can't not be straining if you have tensions.... Lol.

Really honest answers: Lows: 5/5 (That's very easy, lows are kinda the easiest part to define support vs strain and unsupported) Belts: 14/15 (Damn, I was wrong only at 3 quiz, it was kinda raspy hence I thought it was strained, messed up a bit ) Head voice: 9/10 (Honestly, I disagree with that airy head voice can't be supported, that's simply not true. Airy head voice =/= falsetto, my highest head voice "area" from G5 to D6 is kinda airy too a bit but I still can add compression and sustain notes like forever with stable vibrato and power so it's not falsetto, same with some of these examples) Thanks for video, that was very interesting to hear, more knowledge about defining support vs strain however I do agree with comments that support is a spectrum, like from 1 to 10, same with tension and strain, it's pretty much like equation: Support (1 to 10 points, you can't have 0 at this point cause without support you will be silent, lol, but suppoort can be VERY small and constricted)+ tension (0+10, you can however sing completey without tension, but only greatest vocalists can do so)= final sound, for example Sohyang at basically any note within her supported range: Support (10) + Tension (0) = 10/10, that means resonance Ariana (let's take a look at sustained F5 from Break Free): Support (3/10) + Tension (7/10) = -4, that means strain, although not so big as it could be but still P.S Yes, there are much more happening in our voice, like lifted soft palate, no jaw, tongue tension etc but that was simplification in order to understand how strain can not always be totally strained but just a little strained, same with support, you can still support with tension, that doesn't mean you're straining, that just means you don't fully support and probably don't produce resonance cause of lack of support. But you're still not straining, somebody needs to make a video about levels of straining and supporting. That would be quite new and fresh.

Ok so these are my answers (oops I'm giving away the answers...): Low notes: 1. Strained (I can barely hear it lol) 2. Not strained (I'm not using the term "support" cuz it's not a real thing) 3. Strained (I was wrong 💀) 4. Strained 5. Not strained High notes: 1. Strained 2. Not strained 3. Strained (great I was wrong here too) 4. Strained 5. Not strained 6. Not strained 7. Strained 8. Not strained 9. Strained (❌) 10. Not strained 11. Strained (it seemed like he was putting in a lot of effort) 12. Strained 13. Strained 14. Strained 15. Strained Head voice: 1. Not strained 2. Strained 3. Strained 4. Not strained 5. Strained (❌) 6. Strained 7. Strained 8. Strained 9. Strained (❌) 10. Not strained Lows: 4/5 High notes: 13/15 Head voice: 8/10 So I got 25/30. I could do better, now that I think about it. I guess I'm better at identifying strain in high belts than in low notes or head voice (identifying strain in a belt is quite easy though, because you can hear it in the way the sound is produced)

Can't still understand why people're reacting Jungkook as Vocal King! Even if we're forgetting support range, his vocal is still not impressive one. His runs are messy and sometimes the vocal strain made him went out of tune. Sometimes, his falsetto are sharp and mostly breathy. Sometimes, he produce heady mix. How can he be called as vocalist? It is not hate on people liking his voice. May be people can love his stylistic choice and way of singing. But, he is not a standard vocalist even among Kpop male idols.
