Imagine, if you will, a 16 yo girl, in early 1975, listening to this album. I'm a born and raised Milwaukee girl and WE made Supertramp famous. Shortly after I heard an ad for an upcoming Supertramp concert. I had to go! The show sold out so quickly (you had to physically visit a Ticketmaster location to buy tickets) that the band added a 2nd show at 10:30 PM. I attended that show. Unbelievable!! The band had recently released their 4th album, "Crisis? What Crisis?" and as I recall, they played every song from this album and the previous year's one, "Crime of the Century." Hey, this concert was FORTY-FIVE years ago! And I still remember fondly and with such joy, how I loved it!! 💜💜💜💜💜

Lemming 998 I also agree to an extent, but there nothing wrong with melody and keeping things relatively simple. MOR has been used in such a derogatory fashion (mostly with some justification) that anything with that label conjures up throwaway bubblegum pop. Can’t apply that here. AOR, yes.

Why is Crime of the Century so good? Well, apart from being a "do or die" album for them (their first two were commercial disasters), they recorded 42 demo songs during the recording sessions. This album represents the best 8. Some of the songs recorded in these sessions wound up on their follow-up album, "Crisis, what Crisis?" This album is "all meat," no filler; one that should be in anyone's collection. And School is one of the few songs that includes both Hodgson and Davies singing on the same track. The next tune on the album, "Bloody Well Right," is a Davies tune, but begins with a line that flows directly from this song, "So you think your schooling's phony? I guess it's hard not to agree..." Go ahead and do this album in order.

This album spoke to many teenagers when it came out, and I was one who couldn't stop listening to it from beginning to end over and over. WE were all dreamers who had suffered the oil crisis and the power cuts - doing homework by candlelight. After the excesses of the 60's, we saw the beginnings of a radical change in society which would ultimately release "punk" on the world. Crime of the Century is a deep meaningful statement of its time dealing with the teenage angst from school to beginning a journey in adulthood. Rudy is my favourite track for many personal reasons. A great album that deserves a much wider recognition. Enjoy JP.

I agree with you 100%- great track. School is written by Roger Hodgson. The entire Crime of the Century album is magnificent. I got chills when I heard the harmonica opening at Roger's concert in London. WOW- best concert ever. I just closed my eyes and it sounded like the original album. If you liked School, I bet you'd like the song Had a Dream (Sleeping With the Enemy) from Roger's solo album In the Eye of the Storm. I'd like to hear your comments on that one!

There are lots of great Supertramp songs:. Hide in Your Shell, Another Man's Woman - Live at Royal Albert Hall 1997 (great piano), Don't Leave Me Now (quiet and meaningful), Fool's Overture (a little prog), and so much more. Roger Hodgson has some great solo tunes too (Only Because of You). He put a lot of religious meaning into his and Supertramp's songs. I am not religious, but the music still hits my soul.

This is their masterpiece album, 8 perfect songs from start to finish, ending with the best song on the album, Crime of the Century. A cool fact you will only notice if you listen carefully is that the quiet ominous background music at the start of School while the harmonica is playing, and just before the guitar starts, is actually the music from the last song on the album, Crime of the Century, while as Crime of the Century is fading out at the end of the album you can hear the harmonica from School coming in, making the album a never-ending circle.

In the world of progressive rock, there's the very artistic stuff like Yes and King Crimson and ELP, then there's the more commercially accessible prog which includes Supertramp (in my opinion). I think Crime of the Century is the most artistic of their albums, but their most commercially accessible and probably the best-crafted of their records will always be Breakfast in America, for me personally.

I was waiting for your reaction to that galloping drum into that gets louder and louder. Great opener... Now go through it all... Crisis What Crisis, Even In The Quietest Moments also worth deep digs! Supertramp gets into my blood... like Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, XTC, The Chameleons... They have amazing songs with great lyrics to match their brilliant musicianship. Best school song: "Playground" by XTC.

They didn't slow down either...subsequent albums Even in the Quietest Moments and Crisis...What Crisis? were also sublime...and Breakfast in America..(although with a more popish sheen.)....nice choice!!...Cheers from Canada!

School’s lyrics written by Roger Hodgson captures some of our own memories of having to conform at a young age and the struggle to fit in. I think it is cool that Roger still performs occasionally on the grounds of his old private boarding school when on tour! Thank you for reviewing this song and I hope you listen and review a few more of classic Supertramp and Roger Hodgson’s solo albums in the future. :)

Such a great song from such a great album. "School" is, literally, on my Top 100 list. In fact it's #33. About eight, nine years ago, probably thirtysomething of us from a music chat room each made our Top 100 Songs list, in order, basically for shits and grins. 'Crime Of The Century', as so many others have commented, is a near perfect album. When I saw Supertramp in '77, they played seven of the eight songs on the album. "School" was the opening song, which set the bar for the rest of the show pretty damn high. They didn't disappoint. Their most popular album is "Breakfast In America', which has some VERY poppish hits on it, and then some more proggish stuff. Not my favorite album, but that's just a matter of personal preference. I just "discovered" your channel about two weeks ago, and I'm really enjoying the hell outta your comments and analyses. All have been very well articulated, which is a REAL enjoyment in this Internet world of fanboy fanaticism and inane comments that make no sense. Thanks!

I can't tell you how much Supertramp has been in my all time top 10 bands. Ever since their albums have hit the airwaves back in the fabulous 70's have I not been disappointed with their different style of music and not afraid to sound different. They blended progressive rock and pop styles and their use of a Wurlitzer electric piano and saxophone just added to the that sound. The song SCHOOL starts off slow but picks up its tempo and then slows down for it's ending. RUDY and CRIME OF THE CENTURY is worth a listen .So happy Justin you found Supertramp.

Justin, very happy you like this song! -- It was the song that turned me on to Progressive Rock! It is definitely my favorite song about school... But here are a few honorable mentions, in no particular order, for your consideration: "School's Out" by Alice Cooper "Back to School" by Jon and Vangelis (That's right, Yes' Jon Anderson and the genius of Vangelis in one album!) "Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd "Smoking in the Boy's Room" by Brownsville Station "La Craie Dans L'Encrier" by Catherine Lara (It means, Chalk in the Inkwell) Sorry, that last one's in French, but I cannot make a list of songs about school without including this one... It's just brilliant!

ST always reminds me of a long road trips or hanging at a cottage, Tramp makes me feel warm and fuzzy. In regards to songs related to school. "Another Brick in the Wall" PF or "Hot for Teacher" VH come to mind. But I think Rita Marley "One Draw" extended version would be my choice. When I heard the song, I just loved it.

One of my Favorite songs and best from the Crime album. Roger wrote this one himself and usually plays this song second during his live tour. Actually sounds better today with his band than on the album. Please take a listen to the complete album. You Won’t be disappointed!!! RogerHodgson.com. #rogerhodgson.

This is such a good album! One of my favourite albums and a nice introduction, at least for me, into prog. They're best album, it's sad they weren't as prolific as other acts and ended up only having 4 really great albums (with a couple of good ones).

THE best song from a FANTASTIC album. This is the song that "grabbed me" back in 1977 and made me a fan. I'm not sure I've ever seen you bop your head and smile as much throughout a song. I'm looking forward to the rest of your reviews, especially "Rudy" (there's really good video that goes with it that they used at concerts).

'School's Out' by Alice Cooper is my favourite school-related song by far! Gosh, was I glad after I'd finally finished it, too! 😆👍 And this here Supertramp one must be my second-favourite 'school' song; Both actually remind me of a family holiday to the Netherlands in 1984: My Big Sis had 'The Best Of Supertramp' with her on cassette tape, while I had 'School's Out' on a mixtape 😊

JP, an old hippie here from Canada. Supertramp had it's first early success in Canada before this album and as a teenager I couldn't wait for the release of Crime of the Century. I had been taking music lessons for 9 years by this time, on my fourth different instrument. This album was another revelation for me. I say another relevation because there were others before this. The most significant album for me was by a band called: Argent. Co-founded by Rod Argent, the original and current keyboard player for The Zombies. The Album by Argent is called Nexus, and more significantly The song entitled "Music From the Spheres". This song had such a profound on me it literally changed my Life. From it I discovered Progression Rock, and all of the amazing prog out there. I actually ended up co-founding a Prog Rock band myself a few years later and we wrote and performed our own music for 4 years. I would strongly implore you to react to Music From the Spheres by Argent. It's on KZread, I checked. Thanks.

This album is the first one from the "classic" Supertramp lineup and what a way to start their legacy! There isn't a song on this that isn't at least good, and most of them are great if not masterpieces. School and Crime Of The Century clearly take the cake from me, but Bloody Well Right, Rudy, Dreamer and If Everyone Was Listening are definitely worth your time as well. Supertramp has an incredible pianist in Richard Davies and if you're looking for a couple more of his glorious piano solos, look to Another Man's Woman and Child Of Vision. Welcome to Supertramp!

Another of my favorite bands. And this song is a top choice. Two or four outstanding albums: Crime (of course), Crisis What Crisis, Even In The Quietest Moments, Breakfast In America. They did make a couple of others, but I lost interest in them to be honest ( maybe not deserved, but there you go..). This song (School) and Alice Cooper's School's Out are the two that I think of when thinking of "School songs". Nice video. P.S. Notice the bass technique? The slide on the second note. Very much a trademark.

This was the first LP I ever bought that was not a 'Greatest Hits' type compilation. The LP was bought off the back of seeing 'Dreamer' performed on 'Top of the Pops'. As luck would have it when I got back from the shop my Dad had just finished building his Hi-Fi system so I was able to play it through headphones on his system. On that first listen the screams had me lifting the needle and dashing outside to see what the commotion was!! - A level of production quality that was somewhat lost on my Mum's old Dansett!! - This LP was and remains one of my favourite LPs.

I really enjoy your analysis on this channel. Your one of few that actually review the music. Not saying I always agree with you tho. Think about this for a min. How many times do you hear a song and its ok ,then it grows on you and it becomes good or really good. Every song on this lp, Crisis what Crisis, and Even in the quietest moment start out at really good on just the first listen ! So imagine after you get into their grove, I'm telling you they will be one of your favorite bands if you like keyboards, horns, and saxophone in your music along with guitars, drums, etc. not to mention mind blowing production, musicianship, and vocals put all together so nicely.

You can see where Muse got their 'Knights of Cydonia' intro idea from :). You will be familiar with Supertramp singles which were many and popular both here and worldwide. Although themselves excellent, as pop/rock music, they don't really tell the full story of the band. They reached their zenith in popularity with 'Breakfast In America' which most people will know worldwide but I think they are best loved by most fans for 'Crime of the Century' and 'Even In The Quietest Moments...'. There's some debate about the album between, 'Crisis? What Crisis?', but in my view it stands alongside the other two. Up to the big split in 1983 they never wrote or performed a bad song (i.e. between 1974 and 1983) imho. My advice is listen to the whole album. Don't forget Manfred Mann's Earth Band btw :)!

Agree, not one single bad in a 10 year span. Crime of the Century is the crown jewel from a popprog point of view. Crisis what Crisis is so much sweeter, more melodies pop-like. Still very good. Even in Quiest moment has both Crime and Crisis in it. Breakfast just a full blown pop oriented but still good album, maybe #3 just before Crisis but then after Famous Last word Hodgson left and Davies took it a bit from pop to less commercial easy listening with Brother Where You Bound. The sing Cannonball is really good among others. Great band though in much part a band with two musical leaders and styles.

I heard about Dev 4 years ago and he is the first musician in DECADES who I binge-bought every CD/DVD of his, as a 60-year-old. (My wife was raising her eyebrows.) He's a unique talent. Brilliant song from a brilliant album. The BEST studioalbum by ST to my ears. And the spaghettiwestern harmonica from "School" also makes a killer intro on their livealbum "Paris". Another schoolsong that comes to mind is "I won" by The Sundays, from "Reading, writing & arithmetic", but pretty much that whole album is about school, studies, moving into your first flat etc. The title kinda gives it away ;-)
