My god, the lyrics from their songs are brilliant. Here he is, his life a total mess and he comes up with “while in the mirror, she admires a brand new dress” to fully capture that desperate feeling. Just one of many, many great lines from them.

Indeed, Supertramp lost 50% of its magic when Roger left the band. But I think the same happened to Roger. I also saw Roger last year, was the best show I've seen, and I had the awesome opportunity to meet him on the backstage. But it's not the same thing when isn't Rick playing Child of Vision piano solos, or when Roger isn't playing the final solo of Goodbye Stranger. Both of them complete Supertramp. They together almost reaches perfection. The remaining comes from the other guys :D

I agree. Hodgson's solo versions can't touch the originals. Shame about his personal war against Rick Davies & Supertramp. That's been a bummer for many Supertramp fans. I admire Rick Davies for trying to keep Supertramp alive for the fans, but of course it's never been the same without Hodgson. At least Pink Floyd finally got over their differences and did something for their fans. It would have been nice to see Hodgson & Davies do the same.

@@steelyman08 Actually, Roger and Rick tried to reunite in 1993 and Roger offered himself, in 2010, to play in the last Supertramp tour. It's known that they worked in the studio in 1993 for some time, but he always had big problems with Rick's wife, Sue Davies, which is also Supertramp's manager. Basically that's the reason why a reunion never occurred.

@@danilosupertramp Too much hearsay as well. The truth is between the two of them and only Hodgson tends to continually air his grievances. Davies is a quieter sort of fellow. They've wronged one another more than once. Makes you wonder why they can't simply fix it for the fans (and one another)? Almost 40 years now. They should both set a better example. End of story.

This song came out the summer of my graduation. "79". But is most meaningful in the context of me going to jail in "86" for handing a gram of cocaine off to a friend who then got caught with it. I kept my mouth shut and paid the price. I never ratted the source; yet it has followed me for my entire life. "Live on the 2nd floor now, they're trying to bust the door down." And they did.

It is a shame Hodgson and Davies cannot bury the hatchet and do an album and tour for the fans that made them in the 1970s. And then one day one dies and all is lost forever and for what purpose - the egos and brownie points and copyrights and money?

Tsnore For a long time, I thought Rick's song Cannonball was about Roger, the lyrics are very pointed toward someone. But apparently it was about some less-than-stellar manager. It's a shame, really. To this day, Roger still doesn't like it when they play his songs, which made up a lot of their greatest hits (though this is personally my favourite song from Breakfast In America, that's why I'm here). I took a listen to the band's last album from 2002...eh, the new vocalist is not the same.

Spot on. I will say it's mainly Hodgson who's kept the crap flying, but apparently, according to Hodgson, Rick Davies broke some "verbal agreement" they made when Hodgson left. Even if that's true ~ it's been almost 40 years!! "Give A Little Bit" back to the fans who made you, guys!

Actually that was only a part (a small part) of the problem. The bigger part of the problem is that Roger doesn't like Sue Davies (Rick's wife) and he never accepted her management and almost total control of the band, as she does since the end of 70's until nowadays. It was one of the requests he made to Rick in order to rejoin Supertramp in 2010, and, obviously, Rick refused.

Crime of the Century is widely acknowledged as one of their best songs (eclipsed have it on #1, and the rest of the top ten are Roger songs, so they're not biased towards him), and there's good reason why Bloody Well Right, Rudy, Another Man's Woman and From Now On were always popular live numbers.
