SuperSega FPGA Shows Games Running...On Something? Dreamcast FPGA When?
SUPPORT THE CHANNEL : / videogameesoterica
When enough of you keep asking me the same questions I try to listen...and normally thats about MARS FPGA...but today its SuperSega FPGA...or Super Sega FPGA depending on where you read the name; a new FPGA gaming device ala MiSTer FPGA that is promising Sega Dreamcast FPGA cores along with Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sega Master System and more! But is it real? Can they pull it off? What gaming hardware is it using? Because we already have up to the MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn core working today...so that's SuperSega FPGA all about? Or Super Sega FPGA that is? Will it play the best Sega Dreamcast games? Will it be a Dreamcast console?
and now more details have emerged including a Super Sega FPGA price as well as other interesting bits of information like when you should expect to see a prototype...and now games apparently running on prototype FPGA hardware? Hard to say if its using MiSTer FPGA cores? it's own cores? I really don't know
But there are a ton of Dreamcast hidden gems, NAOMI hidden gems, IGS PGM hidden gems...and more! So playing them in FPGA one day in the future could totally be fun!

@@VideoGameEsoterica A $20 Tang Nano FPGA can do SG1000, Master System, Mega-Drive, NES, SNES, GB, GBC, NGP, NGPC, GG, ZX-Spectrum and maybe a few others, I get that there is a decent bit of value in real cartridge slots, even if you don't use real carts, you can get decent benefits from using a flashcarts, as that means the game is running in real-time from a ROM chip, meaning more accurate timings, better audio accuracy/quality, save-states for cores on MiSTer that don't have it like the Mega-Drive and SNES cores for instance, optical-drive emulation for redbook audio, you can use your saves on multiple systems and continue on your game elsewhere, so flashcarts like the latest Everdrives would bring a lot of functionality to MiSTer, or you could build a collection of the really high quality repros of 8/16-Bit games available now without needing a second mortgage on your home, sadly it doesn't have enough resources to implement afaik on the current DE10 Nano MiSTer hardware. I hope MiSTer 2.0 comes with an optical drive, so we can use both authentic game disc, but also can buy and build an awsome repro disc collection for it, you could have awsome game compilations like the original Sonic 1/2/3/CD complete with artwork and a manual and a CD soundtrack, SNES repro games on disc with MSU-1 MIDI or tracker soundtracks, a disc repro of Mario Allstars with the updated MIDI soundtracks, they could include quality of life updates on these repro releases, HQ PCM audio made from MIDI 2.0 recordings, really enriching the whole FPGA experience, and who knows, perhaps real publishers could get in like Evercade, SuperRare, you could even have some really fancy physical releases of decomped games, translated games and fan releases like the Christian Whitehead Sonic games, not to mention Indies and homebrew, demo discs could be a thing again (lol). Of course only commercially abandoned games could be legally released, that is until a licence agreement was made, but if FPGA gets big enough to make commercial reprints and compilations worthwhile, it would be really dope to see, and mean you don't have to spend £200 on rare games any more if you want to own a physical release, plus physical is a big part of what makes these old consoles and games so special, I think you lose too much when it all becomes just a list of games to choose from, rather than picking something of the shelf that catches your eye.

I'm very interested in a Dreamcast core. Unfortunately, Dreamcast has a couple of problems with my favourite games (the CPS2 and 3 ports). There's dithering at the middle of the screen on the RGB and VGA signal that I just can't remove. It happens with Tink4K using the DCDIGITAL mod and with the expensive retrogamingcables RGB cable. Also, the scaling backgrounds because the resolution is wrong. Emulators have both these problems completely fixed running at 4K. I don't know how. I hope it's possible with FPGA.

Dreamcast video RAMDAC quality is immaculate via the official 24-Bit VGA, no pixel-clock issues or dithering at all, on a CRT monitor, that super-sampled 240p & 480p image quality is the best I have ever seen from an analogue video signal, the Xbox 360 VGA is runner-up, as though it has higher max resolution, it is definitely missing some of the colour volume of the Dreamcast official VGA box, neither does the 360 have super-sampled rendering like the DC, there are way to get the 360's 16-235 colour-scale looking as good as the Dreamcast's 0-255 colour scale, using an RGB video post processor, you can increase colour luminance, saturation and colour volume to match the DC's native rich colours, you also have digital colour vibrancy RGB modulators from Sony, which can upsample/transcode the colour gamut of any RGBS or RGBHV or YPbPr signal to SMPTE-C et cetera. I also love how 240p looks on the DC, that immaculate RGB fidelity but with scanlines intact is beautiful, if only 384p was an option too, which offers the perfect middle ground between 240p & 480p.

I have faith especially for MasterSystem since Brazil loved that system. Since they attempt to demonstrate Saturn they probably will focus on that one too. Dreamcast will be the real deal here and while I have no clue about what they do for the FPGA replication (can't say emulation as this wouldn't do it justice) side of things, some Bluray drives actually allow using modified firmware to read GD-ROMs like the BW-16D1HT from ASUS as far as I know. Seeing how they pull it off will be interesting indeed. That's not true though is it, I'm not a fan of MARS or the way they have gone about things, but they do have actual reputable people working on the project with proven track records, known FPGA engineers and devs, this in itself is tangible proof that at least lends some credibility, the SuperSEGA on the other hand has a novice pilot with supposedly some engineering background but nothing related to FPGA or vid game development as a whole, neither do any of the others have any background in anything remotely relatable, and now they are supposedly posting proof for their supposed FPGA project, that imo has only given more weight against it, not for it.

And both of these products make me question who would go for them over a MISTER setup or a sleek Analogue offering. Per the Early Worm effect, even if these guys do have a magical Dreamcast core that can read GDROM discs, it’d only be a matter of time before MISTER gets a similar if not better core of its own.
