More I am looking at how my Quaderno A4 sits on the table, and how it exhibits the almost exact type of a look, more I am leaning towards expectation that the A5X2 may have a non flat back. Given that it's "perfectly levitating" a tapered back in the style of Sony DPT, Papyr, Quaderno is a much more likely conclusion. If that's the case, than this is "good news" for those who are worried about a device being too thin, but it also can be quite a big bummer "For Those Who Write", if the device ends up tilting around while writing on it, due to a non-flat back design. I have a DPT, and I never found the non-flat back to affect my writing. If that's what SN did, I'm sure it will be fine in practice

I have a Quaderno A4 and it too is perfectly fine for writing, but that is a 13.3" device. If your Sony is also a 13.3" device then they work the same, but in practice, I've found that this kind of design can become a bit too unstable in smaller formats. I've never tried the A5 Quaderno, so I don't know directly, but I do remember, I believe it was called Notéa, a 10.3" tablet that had a similar design, and there, the tilting most definitely was an annoyance.

I know that fans are frustrated by the production delays, but I’m impressed by Supernote’s determination to do it right. If only their competitors paid as much attention to product development!

The A5X2 is a rendering. It is not an actual device in that picture. Look where the light is coming from (right hand side). Look at the white reflection on the table from the original device. See how there is no similar reflection on the table from the A5X2. Also there is a dark shadow along the right edge of the device where it should be lit up. I do not thing such detailed analysis can be made from a rendering that might be old.

SuperNote is probably under tremendous pressure for the A5X2 expecially since the A5X has not been available for many months. But they are lean and smart. I love my original A5X (currently being used by my daughter in her business career until the A5X2 is available. I’m using the A6X2 and love it. Goes everywhere. Thin, light and super capable. Everything I need.

it was an error to stop sales of the a5x. Now the goal posts keep moving. Now they've lost at least 9 months of sales, of people who would have liked to have had a larger device without the "Nomad" tweaks in the short term. Even if they had extra inventory at launch of the a5x they could have easily sold them at today's prices, given that the new a5x2 will likely be more expensive.

The back could also be like the Microsoft Surface Studio 2 bottom. Instead of a bulge like most modern phones and tablets causing unevenness when flat on the table, it could be like a "false base". I'm not that good with describing things, it's best to look at that MS Surface Studio lol. On the less extreme idea, it could just be faceted. The overall thickness will be primely in the middle, and it gets thinner to the edge.

It's so fun to speculate!!! I can't wait for them to drop more information regarding the specs of this unit.

The folio will be fixed mechanically, not magnetically. I suspect that the extra width may be linked to this fixing system or to a pen holder ? (as the aspect ratio of the screen will be the same). My original idea was to replace the rear shell with a folio (rigid at the back, using the same design as the shell).

Can you compare the A6x2 Nomad to other readers of similar size, purely as readers? Like leaf 2 or kobo sage

The elevation in the photo appears to be uniform across the device and not just at one end as with the Kobo Elipsa, additionally, I see no pen loop. I notice that the cover overhang which hides part of the thickness wasn't allowed for when measuring the thickness which _'may'_ mean the device is a mill or two thicker than calculated? We were told the A5X2 has the same internals as the A6X2, so how have they made it thiner than the A6X2 unless the elevation is caused by a bump which incorporates the A6X2 internals? Either way, I never purchased the A5X for its looks and with bump or not, I won't be purchasing the A5X2 for its looks either, but the software and ability to repair. I just hope they've kept the _'rubbery'_ screen feel and haven't gone for hard glass... which will make my HOM pens null and void. Another interesting video, appreciated.

It's easy to make it thinner, because the battery and the components can be distributed in a completely different and a non-stacked way, as the work area is a lot larger than on the A6X2.

@@MyDeepGuide That sounds great and I do hope you're right, I just pictured the exact same internals in their same configuration dropped into the A5X2 as are found in the A6X2. *May I ask, has the A6X2 a **_'rubbery'_** screen or hard glass? Anyone know?*

@@karlmunford7000 The screen itself is glass on top of which is the FeelWrite 2 surface that is "self-healing" and softer. and doubles as screen protector and specialized writing surface.

@@MyDeepGuide Thank you for explaining that, so _'I assume'_ my A5X also has a glass screen but with the FeelWrite1 surface added. But wow, what a difference, it really does feel as though the whole thing is rubber and so very different from the slippery hard screen feel of my Air 2 Plus.

Due to the shadows around the A5X2, the device is likely to be a lot thicker in the middle. What is no longer possible, however, is that a Mobius screen is installed

I had to make a call last year to either get the A5X or bet on the promise for the A5X2 which was supposed to be ready end of 2024. I bought the A5X and entirely gave up on the idea of waiting for new products.

Is it possible the edges are tapered? If thats the case I doubt it'll be 3.9mm thick. RM2 is 4.7mm sealed up

It's unlikely that the thickest part of the device will be any thinner than the Nomad, assuming they're using basically the same PCB as a base. They might be able to make the battery thinner but the PCB + Screen thickness is the physical limit.

Yes, but you also have to have stacking in small devices like the A6X2. This is why the larger devices are always thinner, as there is more real estate to distribute the components without the need for stacking.

@MyDeepGuide Perhaps. I guess I was thrown off by the modular design of Nomad. It was a bit of an odd choice to put the battery, cpu, and memory in the middle of the device, leaving (what I assumed) was a lot of empty space all around the main components. If that's not, in fact, the case, and there's stacking, then yes, it could get thinner. However, I'll stick to my guns and say it's more likely they'll just reuse the Nomad layout and maybe pop in a slightly bigger battery and bigger screen. Then, they'll use the extra real estate to taper the thickness towards the edge, giving the impression of a thinner device sitting on a drink coaster. I'm not really complaining. It's a perfectly legitimate design choice. Lots of device manufacturers do the same thing. The whole thing with devices looking like they were cut out of a single piece of metal or plastic is something Apple invented. I actually think that if they continued the design choice and rounded the edges as well, it might even feel more comfortable in the hand than a perfectly square edged device. Now, a really neat trick would be if they included wireless charging since they eliminated the USB port on the bottom. (most likely moved it somewhere else. ) But if they did that, they'd have to figure out how to do updates and load apps via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Of course, they could always use the same connection they use to do local screen share. (A nice trick on its own!). I still think it was a mistake to stop selling the A5x while they develop the "perfect" A5x2 device. They allowed perfect to get in the way of good enough. Certainly, there will be some pent-up demand, but anyone considering buying a Ratta device will now either buy something else and not buy into the software model or buy a Nomad (best case). If they were worried about people returning the A5x when the A5x2 came out, that may still happen with the Nomad. It's just as easy to exchange a smaller device for a bigger one. Case in point, I'm currently trying to decide whether I need a better note taking device or a better note taking app, instead. If Ratta wants me to wait nine months to buy a device from them, it better come with a vegan leather cover and a pen made from recycled vinyl records! Perhaps I need a thing "For those who [don't ] write.' Clay tablets last longer, and they're easier to recycle! (Sorry for the rant)

SN: I appreciate their being willing to take their time to do things right. rM: This company dribbles things out slowly, which is said to be a bad thing. SN is engaging in vaporware here. "Don't buy other products - our great product is coming!". They're also committing the ultimate product faux pas - Osborning their own sales. In essence they're telling us not to buy their current products because their rM-like product is coming out later this year. This is a complete failure of their product management process

I'm... holding the Boox NA2+ in my hand right now. It's A5 size, roughly the same, and it's almost 6 mm. I... don't think I'd want a signifficantly thinner device, I'd constantly be scared for its durability.

They have just done a beveled edge on the back.

does it allow voice recording whiles taking notes and whiles switching between apps?.

I waited about 2.5 months for the nomad. I ordered back in the beginning of march and just got it a few days ago. I would have canceled this order and waited for a5x2 but more delays would have made me lose interest altogether

I hope they haven’t weakened the device by shaving the X2 so thin. Apple and reMarkable’s obsession with this has produced some frighteningly fragile devices over the years.

I think it is a bit silly seeing Vojislav get so excited about the possible thinnest dimensions. The really GREAT thing about my A5X is how rugged it is. Sexy - NO ... Flat and durable YES! In my new job I get to use it OUTDOORS all of the time (I am taking measurements for new windows and doors and then sketching the schematic views of them on the screen with my Lamy pen). I also LOVE that my current device has the built in channel routed into it - meaning the Laamy Super Star case can NEVER get accidentally detached. Also with the ugly but necessary gunking of MS Polymer 'glue' around the pen holder loop, this crucial part is also reinforced enough not to come away at the stitching (as it did, and will without that mod). In short, I do NOT want a super sexy, yet more FRAGILE, iPad AIR vs std thickness iPad design (fine for showing off indoors) ... but NOT for using on the go, when its literally raining on the screen as you are sketching and writing on it, under time pressure. Also I cannot fathom how a longterm durable tablet can be much thinner than what I am typing this reply on now, my Samsung S7 Plus. That is about 6mm thick. That equals approx 4mm for USB C port aperture and 1mm either side of it. Please do NOT sacrifice real world (heavier use indoors and OUTDOORS) use to go super thin and sexy for the hell of it. My A5X swould be rugged enough to slip in and out of a bag even without the protective Lamy case. If it was thinner, with or without the case, I would be worrying LOADS more about whether I was potentially going to crush/bend/snap something ... if something pushed in a a not 'flat against it' way from either side of the bag / outside sleeve nnoocket part of any bag etc it was slid into.

@@SinickleMe One key aspect that you may have overlooked is the the most important one: the material used. Metal + glass + thin = fragile. Plastic + thin = very durable. For example, the Sony DPT based devices, Quaderno A4 and Quirklogix Papyr are extremely thin devices, made entirely out of plastic, and are some of the most durable devices that I have ever had or worked with. Either way, it looks more and more like the A5X2 will have a tapered back, like the Sony DPT based devices do, which means it will be thicker than indicated in the images (that would explain the uniform "levitation"), but that will also mean that it won't have a flat back, and that can easily turn out to be quite annoying "for those who write"...

@@steverolfeca As long as Voija is correct that all plastic (incl screen) device CAN be both thin and strong ... I'm cool with that :) What I won't be 'cool' with is if dimensions and aesthetics trump practical. Another area to debate- edges around screens: this space is very important (especially for devices like Supernote, where one and (now with A6X2) swipe UP/DOWN panel areas are so crucial to the workflow success of the OS interface. Linked in with this ... PALM REJECTION. This is still an area that isn't good. Even (as I have done for years now with my A5X) I turn off the finger turning gestures completely ... recently it seems to do nothing for my resting palm on the right side, as I try to write/draw or simply navigate the device. What, up to now, has been a brilliant and unusual strength for Ratta = their Kaizen approach to software and UI, combined with an obvious belief that strong and continual (interactive) software development. Clearly brilliant software can (incredibly so with Supernote) outweigh vacuous and 'showy' hardware. Ditto the effect this approach has with harnessing TRUST and long-term INVESTMENT from their user base. I have no interest in updating devices (such as my Samsung S7+ for example) , or my Pixel 5 phone ... as long as they continue to operate handsomely. The latter are not going to get significant OS software updates from now on. However I have every conviction that whether I use my A5X (and/or) a newer A5X2 or A4X2 .... ALL of them, old and newest, will continue to receive an ever evolving software OS / UI. Of course certain physical changes may limit what percentage of software change goodies come to the older 'non2' models - yet I live in hope that they will be able to live in relative harmony with each other 😇😇

long term a5x user here. I would be more interested in them sorting out the lag and palm rejection issues rather than making it a thin portfolio. Looking to upgrade this year but not convinced that supernote is the way to go. It's just too buggy and clunky

Supernote has great products. Some of the best. However their marketing is poor and you really have to want it buy it. They have no distributors and their pricing is much higher than Remarkable. I wonder how they can win the battle of notepads with such little commercial approach

I just cancelled my nomad I purchased in April. These Supernote guys are bozos. I put the money towards a tab mini c boox. Can’t wait. No more support for Supernote. 😊 time to move on.
