3 A.M., I'm awakened
By a sweet summer rain
Distant howling of a passing
Southbound coal train
Was I dreaming or was there someone just lying here
Beside me in this bed?
Am I hearing things?
Or in the next room
Did a long forgotten music box just start playing?
And I know
It's a sin putting words in the mouths of the dead
And I know
It's a crime to weave your wishes into what they said
And I know
Only fools venture where them spirits tread
'Cause I know
Every word, every sound bouncing 'round my head
Is just static on the radio
Static on the radio
Static on the radio
Static on the radio
Static on the radio
Everything I think I know is just static on the radio
Static on the radio
Everything I think I know is just static on the radio
Midnight randevou, with a pretty girl
Wearing a torn and tear-stained gown
Like a ghost ship, she appeared from nowhere
And on the highway and flagged me down
I gave her a lift downtown to the Greyhound station
And a flicker of the neon light
You kissed me goodbye and in the mirror of her eyes
I saw my own reflection
And I know
The blind will sometimes lead the blind
And I know
Through shadowlands and troubled times
And I know
Forsaking love, we seek for signs
And I know
Of truths forever hid behind
Is static on the radio
Static on the radio
Static on the radio
Static on the radio
Static on the radio
Everything I think I know is just static on the radio
Static on the radio
Everything I think I know is just static on the radio
And there's a church house
About a stone's throw down
From this place where I been staying
It's Sunday morning
And I'm sittin' in my truck
Listening to my neighbor sing
Ten years ago, I might have joined in
But don't time change those inclined
To think less of what is written
Than what's wrote between the lines?
'Cause I know
Dreams are for those who are asleep in bed
And I know
It's a sin putting words in the mouths of the dead
'Cause I know
For all my ruminations I can't change a thing
Still I hope
There's others out there who are listening
To the static on the radio
Everything I think I know is just static on the radio
Static on the radio
Ain't praying for miracles, I'm just down on my knees
Static on the radio
Listening for the song behind everything I think I know
Static on the radio
Everything I think I know, is just static on the radio
Everything I think I know, is just static on the radio
What you say?

Having watched this as a kid, Superman TAS is the definitive version of the character to me. This iteration perfectly encapsulates everything about the character you know and love. Having both Jonathan and Martha Kent around to be there for him is a nice touch. What Darkseid does to him the two-part series finale and it carrying over to Justice League and Justice League Unlimited just expands the characters growth beyond what I thought possible when it first premiered. My favorite episode to date is The Late Mr. Kent. I won’t spoil it, but a killer thought he took out Clark Kent. Now Superman has to use his intelligence, wit, and investigative skils to solve his own murder while trying to prevent an innocent man from the death penalty.

I always thought that Clark had three identities: Clark Kent, Superman & the Last Son of Krypton. Where the Self-Image is Clark Kent, the Ideal Self would be Superman and the Self-Esteem would be the Last Son of Krypton. But I can see how one could mix & match to suit a story's need

  • @Tyler_W

    @Tyler_W

Same. I always kinda took Superman as Clark's attempt to craft an ideal self that reconciles and harmonizes both aspects of his identity, the best of what it means to be human and Kryptonian. Perhaps subconsciously, he projects that idealizatiom to the world in a way to not just help people, but also to gain some sort of acceptance and belonging.

Really, Smallville Clark is who he is, the boy that grew up on the farm with his adoptive parents and learned small town, Midwestern American values. Finding out he was Kal-El from Krypton and having powers didn't change who he was at his core, more like added extra layers to it. "Superman" is just a public persona he employs so he can use his powers to help others while being able to maintain his normal life.

That Kill Bill speech is actually brilliant, you just need to flip your perspective and look at the character saying it. Bill is a person who kills people for money. Lives in a big house and considers his philosophy and skills so great he takes on students. Couldn't care less about "normal" people. He can't view Superman as a normal person, because he fundamentally believes there are two kinds of people. Masters and cattle. He is the perfect example of why you should pay attention to the subtext of dialogue, not the dialogue. Also, Superman is the mask, Bruce Wayne is the mask.

@@Galvatronover you could say Batman is play acting a bit when he's in full costume, fighting a bad guy. People often say the truest Batman is Bruce Wayne in the batcave. Superman might be true to himself in all scenarios. But he's also getting a lot of attention in costume, and he's aware of it. You could say he's paying attention to his actions when he's in civvies. But that's also when he's comfortable. But when both are in private or with family. Well all people act differently depending on the social circumstances so who knows. I think Clark visiting his parents or with his family or friends is his truest self.

Superman TAS is one my favorite series and the best exemple of how to make adaptation of Superman in more modern world (besides Superman vs Elite and Superman & Lois). Not only the show had adventures that put Superman in situations where he couldn't solve by just using his powers but the series was able to have more mature stories without giving up on what makes Superman so appealing as character for so long (his heroism, kindness and good heart). That's why episodes such as the Darkseid arc are so impactfull in the series, since the show established Clark as this inspiring hero, making it shocking when his conflict with Darkseid reveals this dark side, how this villain is able to get though Superman skin and tempt him into breaking his moral code (showing how Darkseid is the biggest villain in DCAU, since he is able to damage Superman not only in physical level, but emotional one as well)..

Superman TAS is a great and underrated series. It shows why Superman is an amazing character. The Late Mr. Kent is my favorite episode from the show and one of my favorite episodes from any show I've ever seen. Probably is a hot take, but I think Superman's pal is a great episode. Jimmy Olsen lies that Superman is his friend, and instead of being mad about it, Superman is like "OK, then I'll be your friend"

I really like the late Mr. Kent too, it's always good to see Superman stories where Clark really cares about speaking truth to power as a reporter. BvS and Truth & Justice are more recent examples of this.

Superman’s ideal reality in JLU is what I love. He just wants to be normal. Love a woman that is human, have a farm and family, have his parents and his home planet back. Not to be worshipped, not to be more powerful, not to be a god. He just wants to be a man.

The thing I like most about this show that I feel is missing from other interpretations is how sassy they made Clark. I'll never forget the episode where he straight up tells Lois he's Superman which explains why he's always the first on the scene and she just shrugs it off

I hate the Kill Bill quote for 3 reasons: 1. It's a villain explaining Superman, which are always casting The Man of Steel in a negative light 2. It's solely for Bill to tell Beatrice Kiddo that she is a killer no matter what she says/does 3. It's so Bill can explain his place within the social pecking order of society...*SPOILER ALERT* Bill thinks he can do/take whatever he wants and pretends to be a harmless human being.

Superman when written as he should be, is really good as a character. he's sadly not done very well most of the time these days. I mean, Batman too, a lot of beloved characters are done dirty by poor writers now. Clark was what superman WANTED to be, what he was inspired by. Superman was inspired by people without his incredible powers, doing the best they can even though they can die a whole lot easier and can't throw skyscrapers. I mean they also aren't usually allergic to rocks, but aside from that.

As someone who’s only now getting into Superman content after being on the Batman train for a while, I was surprised at the lack of Superman TAS analyses on KZread. I started watching the show about a month ago and have been steadily getting closer to its end, and I’m adoring it. Used to think Superman was a boring guy who had no difficulties in his life because he’s an invulnerable alien, but boy am I angry at my past self for ever thinking that. I was hoping you brought up Late Mr. Kent, its definitely one of my favorite episodes in the series :) glad to see it here! Thanks for giving the show some love.

Honestly speaking, I prefer the more "grounded" (ha ha) version of Superman presented in TAS. It evokes the feel of the John Byrne and Max Fleischer era of the character. The power creep in the comics is one of the reasons why its hard to put him in a video game, because by now, this is a character who can fly through suns and donkey-punch an entire planet. So it becomes more difficult to put him in situations where there are veritable threats, unless you start giving everybody red sun weapons, kryptonite missile launchers, or Harry Potter wands. That's not to say he should be _too_ weak, either. Which is why I think the Fleischer cartoons and TAS found a good balance, where he was far stronger than any normal human could be, but could still be beaten down or put in a tight spot in the right circumstances. It's a bit absurd, perhaps, but the scene where Fleischer Superman gets knocked out of the sky and into the ground by Not-Lex-Luthor's beam cannon, only to get back up and start punching his way up the beams _as_ they're blasting him is such a great visual that entices the viewer to get invested.

I hear you on that last statement but never stop being sincere. Never stop being kind. The world right now needs a little kindness and sincerity. That's the world all of us including Superman, or perhaps Clark, would love to be a part of.
