I believe that there is a difference between "pain" and "hurt" often we can see something causes Superman pain, but leaves no actual physical damage to him. His pain receptors in his brain are going off despite the lack of actual damage I believe.

Was thinking similar to Seven Deadly Sin's Pride character being tied to the sun with proximity to it powering him up as the day progresses, no atmosphere to potentially destroy with ultra supersonic speeds acting as a speed limiter to be wary of, and perhaps his physiology has him be like a battery. He doesn't lose his powers at night like Pride sin from mentioned anime, so he has a reserve of power to pull from like Deku I guess in My Hero Aca. The Imperium's invasion didn't last too long, unless there's something like red sun waves that actually depower the Supes I bet some in universe logic could be that he could last some weeks before needing to absorb more sunlight or just wear his black suit that helps him absorb more light 🤷🏻‍♂️

One possible explanation for the variation in Big Blue's powers: He's a living solar battery. Batteries lose power over time, even when not used. This means that Superman's less obvious powers (extra vision mode sets, freeze breath, etc.) will depend on the level of solar power he has stored within. If he's at, say, 92 percent power, he can move at near-light speed; if he's at 42 percent power, he can only go at mach 1. (Those figures aren't canon, but you get what I mean.) This also means that, if exposed to enough yellow sun light over longer periods of time, some of Superman's weaknesses become less important, kryptonite for example can still hurt him but take a lot longer than before to actually kill him. Now, I get that. But, then how does the electricity weakness tie into that? That’s one of those, I knew it moments for me but I could never logically explain it. My working theory is that his body is sensitive to radiation. It would explain Kryptonite, the Sun, and Atomic Skull, but not Livewire. Cuz it’s so odd that he can shrug off fire, pressure, and solar baths but not lightning.

which is weird because sometimes his vision and hearing powers seem to be about being superhumanly able to block stuff out, like hearing something distant in a crowd, or seeing that message in that bright light

I think smashing through a wall is Superman's signature move. Its in the Justice League intro, it was a stable move of George Reeves, and if you think about it only a hero who is strong, invulnerable AND has X-Ray Vision would make their own doors that way.

To be fair the Atlanteans that shot him probably had magic guns and i think star sapphire is kind of magic and also Nazis are magi- where am i going with this.

@JM It might not be an automatic stomp, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a weakness, or vulnerability or whatever you want to call it. Superman beat Captain Atom when he used Red Sun Radiation, would you say Red Sun Radiation isn’t a weakness because of that? If two energy blasts had equal amounts of power, force, heat, whatever - but one was magical in origin and the other was ‘normal’, the magic one would have far greater chances of hurting Superman. Sure, it’s silly if some random, otherwise unimpressive mook takes him down because of that, but he’s still weak to it in a sense that it’s a type advantage (the dude is near invulnerable so y’know).

@JM "automatic stomp" as in if it could stop a normal person it could stop Superman because the properties of magic in the DC universe are unaffected by physical invulnerability. I.e. Wonder Woman's sword is nowhere near sharp enough to cut Superman (nano sharp as seen in the fatal five movie) yet there is a comic panel where he cuts himself on it. _Because it's magic_ it can cut a normal human, and it completely ignored his invulnerability and cut him like one. TL;DR if a magic attack could knock down Joe Schmo it can knock down Superman, it's only an "automatic stomp" if it's that powerful of a spell. Side note: weirdest repeated term for easily defeating Superman I've ever heard

Fun fact, Superman didn't have heat vision as a standalone power initially. The beams were just the heat from his x-ray vision originally

Superman is only a challenge to make interesting if youre only thinking about his powers and not his personality, goals, current mindset based on events, beliefs, etc. JLU made it clear that Superman for instances goes back and forth using his powers fearing of breaking someone cause he lives on a world made of cardboard.

JL season 1 heavily nerfed him when compared to STAS. They unnerfed him for JL season 2 (due to numerous fan complaints and questions). Then they supercharged him for JLU. They they put him in steroids for JL vs the Fatal 5 (which is closest to the comics). Batman Beyond Superman is somewhere between JLU and JL v TF5.

@@chrisanderson2204 I thought "War World" was when they started buffing him again. Mongul was incredibly powerful on a world noted for its powerful gladiator fights, but the best he could do against Superman was only dealing some minor damage. Superman completely outclassed him except for when he was letting Mongul win (while still making it look good), and that was with Superman only using his super strength and durability.

I think it's speculated that Superman can switch from super breath to freeze breath by pursing his lips. It can be explained by the Joule-Thomson effect.

I also associate those eras and iterations with this power level. Most outside media following Post-Crisis follow the Byrne - Jurgens power level. It's a pretty good balance. I don't think we have a lot of post Our Worlds at War/Mongul training level Superman.

The way he did made me think about how Superman post Crisis had to Hold his Breath in space . Or how his Power levels had slightly increase post Death & Return of Superman era in 95 . It's like pre Grant Morrison's JLA . I do appreciate how the DCAU Superman is not neigh unstoppable like his Silver Age pre Crisis counter part who was on Superfriends .

I think they took it a bit too far at times. The 40s cartoon made him seem triumphant and powerful while making him struggle a bit. I think the 90s toon itself tried to hard to make him seem to be struggling. It doesn't ruin it or anything. It's a good show. And he's still powerful at times. Just all those groans and grunts early on were a bit much.

Most versions of Superman won’t instantly lose their powers if you blot out the sun for the same reason he has powers at night, He’s a solar battery constantly charging throughout the day (or whenever he’s in space). Presumably this version can hold his breath in space / underwater for extended times, but if he’s prepared, would prefer not to.

I think his 10 minutes to Gotham thing was probably to avoid breaking anything with sonic booms

It's possible the fatal five speed could be an outlier, as getting closer to the yellow sun could've boosted his power somewhat

I think it Superman's powers grow stronger the older he gets that's my theory on why he seems weak in one episode and OP an another.

The Return of James' da-- I mean Future James

If I were able to make a change, I would have made Superman stronger/more invulnerable. He struggled really hard and lost some fights that he should have been able to win. I would include a progression of him working on controlling his strength as an ongoing theme of his character throughout the show. He always holds back, therefore he sometimes has trouble defeating his enemies. However, he must learn to figure out how to adapt/control his power to stop his foes without killing them.

Okay, I was dying to comment this for months and always forgot. If Superman has super breath, he has freezing breath. It's physics. If a gas expands quickly through a narrow passageway, it cools down its surroundings (or something similar to this). So if Superman can put out fires with his breath, he can also freeze stuff just by narrowing his mouth.

That plane he was carrying was obviously not designed for supersonic speeds. Sub sonic planes come apart if you exceed Mach 1, so keeping your speed down to 660 MPH while carrying an airplane makes perfect sense.

I am Super-Happy to see a Superman video on here. Could a video about Pengui-- er, Toyman's Rubber Duckie be far behind??? And yeah, it took the DCAU a while to get Superman's strength right, even before Justice League... remember in STAS he couldn't catch a missile without getting the wind knocked out of him? Kent[ridge] Farm remembers...

Superman struggling with certain objects can also probably be explained by the sturdiness of those objects. Planes and fire trucks aren't meant to bare all their weight on a single point the size of a human palm.

I believe he just holds back because there was an episode of Justice League when they were training and superman was basically doing everything to fight the robot, they gave him a bunch of crap for doing that, and told him he needs to work as a team and not should the burden himself, just because he can stop it or take it.

I think the flight speed discrepancy between hundreds and billions could be ""explained"" as Superman being closer to the Sun without atmospheric interference, so he's being supercharged, similar to in All Star Superman.

On Superman's speed: Superman gets his powers from solar radiation, this means he's weaker and slower at night, but the more he is exposed to the sun, the more his powers increase. So flying towards the sun might've sped him up along the way. And the sky looked pretty dark when he was flying that plane to Gotham.

Maybe the more sunlight energy in Superman's body, the stronger it is, but it will run out and need to be refilled?

He uses his strength cautiously to keep people from getting hurt.

His base superpowers are pretty much: Localized tactile telekinesis (It's how large objects like buildings or ships remain intact when he picks them up. Also flight.) Limited control of the electromagnetic spectrum (laser vision, x-ray vision, etc.) Super breath Insane endurance bordering on invulnerability Solar charging, I guess? Intelligence and voice manipulation are more _skills_ than powers, IMO.

I thought he could fly and lift objects thanks to manipulating his gravitational field. Edit: TK was 90s superboys way of simulating superman's strength, durability and flight.

I thought Superman and Supergirl were using their heat vision in "Unity." They just stragely colored it white in that episode, maybe because the usual red clashed too much the white tentacles? Also, the I thought the idea was that Superman's heat vision was always invisible in-universe to the human eye, just colored in the animation for the benefit of the audience. That's why he can stealthily use it as Clark Kent when necessary, like the time he destroyed Toyman's planes.

Electricity as a weakness/vulnerability makes sense as long as it's a version that can't absorb it, which this one can't do. The reason being that Electricity just doesn't impact like a bullet does, and instead can course through him like normal. And because he's Superman he can take a lot more before it hurts him, so characters like Livewire can just hit him with full power every time. He may be Superman, but a nonstop lightning bolt through the chest can't feel good.

If I were to make a change, it would be to focus on clark's physical training to becoming stronger, explaining why things that hurt him before now are less effective and why he's so much stronger than other kryptonians, aside from the fact that he's been absorbing sunlight longer than them. I would include a progression of him growing stronger into the hero we know now, then focus on how he now has to limit himself after gaining so much strength.

I just realized, it's the proximity to the Sun, he went so fast cause the Sun is like right there but he needs an oxygen mask in Atlantis cause it's devoid of Sun.

Thanks for the video! I love this breakdown of Superman's powers and weaknesses. I also liked that you highlighted Superman's weakness to electricity. It's not something that gets mentioned often at least not from my experience. I've actually heard that lightning is actually hotter than the sun, but people can survive being struck by lightning since it doesn't last long enough for it to disintegrate the body. If my memory is correct, in the Static Shock episode "Future Shock" where Virgil is sent into the future, Terry McGinnis says that Static is one of the world's most powerful superheroes. By the way, here my further thoughts on various subjects brought up in this video. 1. You guys are right. The DCAU version of Superman does need to breath, but he can last out in space or underwater without a breathing apparatus of some sort and can hold his breath for much longer than a normal human could. The reason we don't always see Superman wearing a breathing apparatus of some sort depends on how dire of an emergency he is in and how quickly the threat is coming. He doesn't always have time to go get some breathing material. 2. The DCAU version of Superman does not have freeze breath for some reason. He can blow people away with his breath, but we never see him freeze anyone with it in the cartoons. I don't know why the people behind the DCAU decided to do this. I recall at one point hearing a rumor that they felt the freeze breath power was "too ridiculous and/or made him too powerful," but I can't remember where I heard that or if I am just misremembering. If this is the case, it would seem very arbitrary considering all the other ridiculous powers Superman has. I can understand writing Superman with the need to breathe and that limitation seems reasonable, but removing the freeze breath for some random, arbitrary, and possibly hypocritical reason always bothered me since when I was really getting into the DCAU I really noticed its absence. Also, Superman may have freeze breath in DCAU tie-in material like the comics or DCAU, but I really don't consider material like that canon unless you got a big writer from one of the shows behind it Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. I also wouldn't take Superman being able to do freeze breath in Superman: Brainiac Attacks as evidence either since the people behind said that they just borrowed the DCAU are style and some voice actors, but wasn't actually set in the DCAU proper and has a load of inconsistencies with it. I'll post a link to your video on it in case someone else reads this comment and wonders something along the lines of, "What are the inconsistencies with Superman Brainiac Attacks and the DCAU?" kzread.info/dash/bejne/iq5stMehmtOepLA.html 3. I actually have an explanation as to why DCAU Doomsday doesn't have Superman's other powers like flight, but is implied to have a weakness like kryptonite. Cadmus did design him to be superior to Superman, but the reason they designed him to begin with was due to being in fear that Superman would turn on the world. Cadmus wanted insurance in case that Doomsday would turn on them as well. So they really just gave Doomsday just the power he absolutely needs to take down Superman which would be super strength, super durability, and regeneration and left a weakness to kryptonite so that in case something ever does go wrong they have a weapon to neutralize him. 4. Here something I just thought of when you brought up Superman's weakness to electricity. Is Galatea dead? Supergirl rammed a cable into her that had the power of the entire watchtower into her. I think that was the most lethal dose of electricity that a yellow sun powered kryptonian ever took in the DCAU. She was left twitching afterwards, but I always took that as residual electricity still within her. If she did live after that, I still think it would take quite some time for her to be healthy again. Did any person who worked on the Justice League Unlimited show ever make a comment or answered a question regarding Galatea's fate after that?

Don’t know for sure about Galatea, but since we know via B&HQ that Power Girl exists in this universe post-Cadmus JLU arc, the running theory is that Galatea survived and reformed. But there’s no proof of that. Agreed @ non-canon tie-ins, but the way I look/looked at it, since some of those materials provide nothing else non-canon other than freeze breath or whatever other power difference, they can still be taken into consideration since it would essentially mean “this is the same Superman, from a nearly identical parallel Earth” a la Justice Lords, Brave New Metropolis, etc.

Usually the older Superman gets the more powerful he becomes but I don't know if that's the case in the animated universe.

This Superman was influenced by the comic Superman at the time. Zero Hour Superman was seriously nerfed. More villains could go toe to toe with him, a rocket launcher could knock him back, or, if powerful enough, knock him out. He couldn't go into space or under water without an independent water supply, and he could actually get exhausted.

Actually, if you read alan Scott's origin story, his ring affects wood just fine. His ring surrounded him with a force field that rendered him invulnerable. He quickly learned it was magnetic in nature and non-ferric materials could harm him. Ironically he learned this when a crook cane up behind him and slugged him with a rock, so wood had nothing to do with it. When they brought the character back in the sixties, they retconned his weakness to be more in line with Hal Jordan's

Even comic Superman has sometimes needed to need to breathe when Bart Allen managed to suffocate Superboy Boy Prime using by creating a vacuum. Before Superboy Prime goes to space.

I wish more people noticed how he can't _fly_ in space in the DCAU and has boot rockets. I mean yeah also if he's away from the sun too long he'd need those, but then he'd also need food and shit. I think the flight relies on earth's EM field.

To be fair I don’t think Superman has ever really had time to see how powerful he really is, since he is constantly saving people and holding back to not hurt anyone. He is the man without limits but no one has ever shown him with limits of his powers, we may never know Bc there’s no definite answer.

I always appreciated Superman's little space suit. It went a long way towards my acceptance of the then-new series. I was like "Oh, this is more realistic. Neat."

I'm nearly finished with Batman Beyond again (for like the 5th time lol) and I'm trying to watch them in (more or less) production order. So BTAS (including TNBA which I know is technically out of production order...), STAS, BB, TZP, SS, JL, JLU, and all the films that go with each series after I finish the respective series. I watched Phantasm and Sub Zero after BTAS but before TNBA. Thanks for an awesome channel revolving around my favorite animated universe. Love the timelines too. Thanks all of you!!

Excellent analysis! That being said, I think it's fair to assume that the Emerald Eye race feat wasn't in real time. Anyway, besides holding back a lot (both intentionally and subconsciously), his power fluctuations can also depend on how much solar energy he's retained. In some continuities outside the DCAU it's also confirmed he can absorb or retain more solar energy depending on his emotional state too.

Idk about the comic cases of him speaking in space, but generally Superman does have to breath. But he CAN hold his breath a lot longer than a human, and can precisely pressurize his lungs correctly for space or underwater.

remember the DC Animated Universe Superman did say he's always holding back. Superman saving Batman from his Kamikaze of the Watchtower could be one of those moments where Superman cut loose. also in the Batman Beyond episode the calls remember superman was mind control so that's probably why he wasn't going as fast. Superman would have been at full power if you've been dispatched to Egypt since he would have been able to recharge but because he was sent back to Metropolis with hawk girl, he likely used up all the solar energy absorbed from the previous day.

Not sure what you’re saying with the Egypt thing at the end there, but yeah, I have no trouble believing Superman can go that fast, it’s the Watchtower itself I don’t think was going that fast.

Maybe the amount of solar charge he has in a given day effects his powers. Also he might have to reserve some of his abilities for later times if it’s still early in a fight or just early in the day.

It wouldn't. While he can get tired and beaten. He gives himself powers. As long as the sun is the sun. He's not absorbing power and then using that power. He's in an environment that activates his body to produce power. It's his internal power. Not the energy he's absorbed.

To be fair about the airplane speed, if he went too fast the passengers would die. So....

Videos like this remind me why I love you guys so much! Sure I know Superman's powers, but I love getting to see James' hilarious editing and humor in these videos so it doesn't matter!

Also forgot to mention the episode of “Superman the Animated Series”, “The Late Mr. Kent”, where bullets fired from a helicopter is enough to send Superman tumbling a few inches.

That would also explain why the Watchtower falls so fast: both are WayneTech. Also, I have a theory that can explain the weird differences in strength shown. Adrenaline. Superman's physiology isn't bizarre alien biology, so it probably uses the same psychology and neurochemistry. There are proven cases of average mothers lifting cars because their kid was stuck. So, take an average person, make them go Action Comics #1 on a car. Now give Superman that same level of adrenaline boost to save his bro. Being that everything else about his biology is "super", he probably has Super Adrenaline which is exponentially more powerful than our adrenaline boost. Over time, his average rises because, being Superman, he's a fast learner and can tap into that power without the boost within a month or two of it happening. So while Teen Clark took several times to fly and developed his powers as a teen rather than being Superbaby and Superboy, 20s Clark is powerful and fast, Clark hits World of Cardboard levels after saving Batman, and thanks to the Darkseid fight he's as fast as he is in JLvFF. As for why he's so weak in Batman Beyond? Mind control! Starro just can't use full power from him and/or he's fighting it still.

Yeah I think most of them did. It was just retcons at first or carelessness. But eventually it got incorporated. I think that also explains why flash and supes were so even at first but by that JL episode, flash is faster.

Also, on the history of the "Superman holding back ", besides literally holding back his punches, in the 90s when he trained with Mongul II he learned that he actually has subconscious limiters that keep his powers from going all out then broke them so he prepare for Impreriex. Years before that it's been shown that mental focus also has a lot to do with his powers. He didn't have the training in the DCAU so that could explain why he rarely performs at his best. As for how that can scale to others, not so sure. I think it's fair to say Captain Marvel was actually pushing Clark to that level since their fight was causing similar levels of destruction, super sonic shockwaves etc. so he's pretty close to that level. For the other kryptonians? Well they haven't been under a yellow sun as long so I guess we can excuse that.....? Man, that does make DCAU Darkseid pretty weak though. That was him with the Brainiac upgrades. But eh, the DCAU still portrays his character best outside comics. He's supposed to be a long game schemer who doesn't like getting his hands dirty unless he really needs to. Plotting in the background, sending his agents. He doesn't just go in there himself to personally challenge heroes to a fist fight with some parademons to back him up....okay that's what JLU did with Destroyer but hey he just got back from the dead and was itching to get revenge. His invasion strategies in STAS were pretty good.

I like to think his strength is a combination of absorbing sunlight for so long and training off-screen, explaining why when he releases his limiters he can beat up darkseid and is so much stronger than other kryptonians.

@@projekttaku1 yeah that’s pretty much the case in comics. Though, when DCAU Clark would’ve learned about how he’s been subconsciously limiting himself this whole time and who helped him train to use his full power are unknown. I guess he could’ve just found out himself over the years.

In order for Supes to weld stuff with his heat vision the way he does his eyes (or face at least) must also emit a cover gas like Argon or CO2 other wise the welds will leak horribly. I done weld training.

The ftl speed and starbusting durability feats in justice league vs the fatal five could largely be a result of bruce timm deciding not to nerf superman as much as he usually did like in the first season of justice league. As he admitted he and the production team purposefully did that because they wanted to give the other justice league members (MOSTLY BATMAN) opportunity to shine on the screen which is why in the first season of justice league superman gets beaten up so much and does hardly anything that helps live up to his legend. It was only after bruce timm got and angry letters from fans that things changed for superman in the following seasons. Plus this isn't the first time in animation superman has done those. In justice league doom both green lantern and superman showed ftl speed feats, aswell as in superman unbound both with supergirl and superman. Heck, even in there, Superman just gets knocked unconscious by a supernova. I think the animation department of warner bros is slowly cossing up to embracing superman's power scope and trying their best to unnerf him in his portrayals while still giving him challenges.

Also the story was basically complete before they decided to make it in DCAU style. So it’s likely they weren’t even considering this being the same Superman when they wrote it, but then again, writer Eric Carrasco has said he kind of always headcanon-ed it to be.

Superman Is Not A Super-Wuss, He Is The One Who Started DC Comics

Freeze Breath: Compressed gases absorb heat when the pressure is released. If Superman has inhaled enough gas into his nigh-invulnerable lungs when the gas is released it will absorb heat from the surroundings, producing the freezing effect. That said, it is safe to assume that Superman doesn't always keep that much atmosphere in his lungs, so most of the time, no his breath isn't that cold. But, on rare occasion, he can inhale enough to be able to produce the effect.

I wonder if the atmosphere is a potential reason for limiting his speed. After all he wouldn't have the Flash's ability of Speed Force aura that protects him from friction. Trying to move at impossible speeds through the atmosphere might even be dangerous to surrounding areas, but he wouldn't have any restrictions in space

The breathing thing has annoyed me for ages. I know this video is only about the AU version of Superman. But the fact that he has to breathe, or not breathe, is also constantly changed in all the other versions. Sometimes he doesn't even have to eat or drink. He just needs solar energy. I would like to see more consistency.

Let’s really geek out....As to the “How fast is he” question. First it’s been established that Superman can fly faster than he can run. That’s why the Flash generally wins in a foot race. Secondly when he was chasing the falling Watchtower or the Emerald Eye he was doing so down the Earth or the Sun’s gravity wells. In effect going downhill. Look to the Enterprise diving into the sun’s gravity to gain enough speed to travel back in time. No one ever said it could go that fast normally. Next, the life support question or “Holding his breath”. It’s been written during the John Byrne run on the comics that Kal-El can hold his breath about 15 minutes depending on his actions and how much air he was able to store beforehand. This explains both the short space jaunts and the need for a long term spacesuit. Also a suit would allow for radio communication because even Superman can’t talk in a vacuum. Thank you for your attention.

I always liked Superman's lead spacesuit in the DCAU the best, as for all the different designs I think the whole league just has style and changes what they wear often.

Kryptonians probably needed lungs and oxygen on Krypton, but Earth's yellow sun can provide a replacement for that So depending on how much solar energy he has at any given time, he might need air

I know that I’m way, way late, but in early comics Superman’s X-ray vision and Heat Vision were the same thing, so that explains that weird thing in that one episode.

This video was a while ago, so i dont know if you’ll see this or not. But maybe you could do this but with batman’s equipment in the dcau, like his claws in the first batman superman crossover, & his electric gloves from the 1st justice league episode. Just an idea

I mean, magic effects him "the same as anyone else" the same way a stake through the heart effects vampires "the same as anyone else".

Flying toward the sun, Superman's powers would be amplified by the sun, allowing him to fly increasingly fast, the closer he got. It's the best way to clock his max speed, but not his max Earthspeed. He can only access his true max speed when supercharged by the sun. Or...y'know...whenever he really, REALLY needs to.

Canonically, Darkseid weighs about 2000 lbs, on average. _This video_ said that a bank vault can weigh *dozens of times more than that,* and Supes ripped it out with not much effort. *Conclusion:* that last episode was *NOT* his _TRUE_ full power, cause if it was, Darkseid would have been shot into space like that football in _Superman's_ 1978 movie.

The thing about x-ray vision I don't get is why isn't it stopped by other things that block x-rays? Gold is denser, and is technically a better radiation blocker. However, the cost factor is a thing. There are other metals that are even denser (e.g. iridium.)
