Superman Returns is a 2006 American superhero film directed and co-produced by Bryan Singer and written by Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, from a story by Singer, Dougherty and Harris. Based on the DC Comics character Superman, it is the sixth and final installment in the original Superman film series and serves as a homage sequel to Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980), while not directly referencing the events of Superman III (1983), Supergirl (1984) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). The film stars Brandon Routh as Clark Kent/Superman, Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane, Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, with James Marsden, Frank Langella, and Parker Posey.

    I think the best thing about this movie is the casting; Brandon as superman was perfect, say what you will about Kevin but I think he was a good Lex Luthor, and the rest of the supporting cast. Fun fact: Henry Cavill was in the running to play superman in this. Glad they waited 6 yrs to give him the part.

    I'll be 100% fair: this movie looks very good in almost every aspects, including the cast. What killed it for me was the script and pace. The dialogue wasn't the worst but jeez sometimes I felt bad for the actors: "it's not like the train set" was what killed my two remaining braincells and it was only the beginning! Sure, characters aren't sometimes portrayed as bright but the lines and decisions made by these people made me wish sometimes that they would die...

    Kevin Spacey is a great actor and his Luthor *should* have been great, but the version of the character in the movie is TERRIBLE, an angry troll who doesn't really does or says anything smart, wastes advanced alien tech on another harebrained real estate scam, and bonks an old woman to get back into business.

    One of the best casting decisions in this was Brandon Routh as he looks more like his comic book counterpart than what Henry Cavill does. The sad thing is they didn't really give him much dialogue when he was Superman. One of the better things about the 1978 motion picture was the conversations between the man of steel and Lois. Particularly the interview in her apartment. There was nothing like that in Superman Returns.

Leaving his children defenseless if another super villain shows up and he can't protect them. Hears the multiverse is collapsing and will destroy all sentient life, laughs at it, then goes to see what his rugrats painted on the wall. Yep, he came back alright. As Selfishman. Now, get this, heres how it should've went down. Tom Wellings Supes hears about the multiverse collapsing, asks if there's anyone else on it and is told that there's a whole group of people. He tells them that he must protect his own home as there's some disaster going on and he has to stay there to deal with it. Let's say Darkseid is back and has taken over the world, he can't just leave that because of the multiverse, if he does people will definitely die whereas if he lets the other heroes handle it, they could very well succeed while him staying behind could make sure no one else suffers while he's out saving the rest of them. He says he cannot help because of this and everyone understands, we can still do the Lex Luthor part but just say maybe he built up a tolerance to Kryptonite after being on earth for so long and being exposed to Kryptonite over and over, Lex has to run back to Charlie and live in his lakehouse afterwards. THERE, character saved. But instead we got what we got because Tom Welling was tired of everyone asking him to be Superman again and he just wanted to be done with it. Plus it was a neat little paycheck. Face it, Tom Welling hated the role, hated us and wanted to be free of it.

    Here's how the movie should've started: Superman is at his peak. He's loved by everyone, Lex is in prison, he's married to Lois and has a son. Whilst he's out flying, then comes the announcement that Krypton survivors may have been spotted. He's filled with emotion and doesn't think what he's hearing through. He instantly leaves. We get a shot of Lex laughing when he finds out Superman left then boom, title card. This creates the idea to the audience that Luthor has been planning this whole thing. When he returns to Earth, he's hated by everyone. Lex is out, has become loved by the city. Where there once was a statue of Superman, there exists now one of Lex. Lex is now trying to manipulate Superman's son to join his side. Make it personal. Put the blame on Superman. Male him feel responsible. Actually kill off Lois to hammer it home. That superman leaving screwed everyone over. Also, you can include that his mother died during those 5 years he was away. Really get to him.

Though it might be more interesting if Superman confronted Lex, who smugly reveals that he didn't do anything; people felt betrayed by Superman leaving and lost hope in him ever returning. Essentially, there's no-one to blame for the city turning against Superman. Clark made a mistake and is paying for it. Lex just took advantage of the situation.

    I can't agree with that. Spacey's Lex feels kind of neutered to me. It's like after every first take in this movie, Singer took Spacey aside and said "Kevin, I think you should maybe tone it back a bit." There are good moments for sure, but Spacey's Luthor has the same problem as Gene Hackman's: the director got the perfect guy for the job and didn't let him do his thing. At least Zack Snyder let Jesse Eisenberg go apeshit and make his Luthor memorable and unique as opposed to just being a comedic foil for Superman.

    @@benwasserman8223 I've seen Cryer's Lex Luthor. And that's a case of an interesting performance being brought down by a mediocre show. The direction writing and editing make his performance father pedestrian. You almost have to take your time in writing Lex Luthor and deciding what you want to do with the character. He's definitely allowed more leeway than Spacey or Hackman, but it's still a little too safe for my tastes.

    Even the video game of Superman Returns had a better plot; the graphics by EA were terrible, but at least Superman got to go up against villains like Mongul, Bizarro, Riot, Mxyzptlk, a giant Metallo. Why not make Metallo a villain in this Donnorverse Superman movie? Or Mongul? If Superman's gonna lift something big out of Earth's atmosphere, at least make it the War World! There is so much potential, but Singer just rehashed the '78 plot.

    His kid wasn't canon....it was a off shoot alternate Earth storyline...Earth 154(Batman also had a son too). Both also were Computer Simulations in Superman 154s Fortress of Solitude and not real even on Earth 154. "The Super-Sons eventually learned that their whole existence was a lie and that they were merely a computer simulation from one of Superman's computers in the Fortress of Solitude. " As for the other son Superman supposedly has he wasn't created until 2016 so most of us don't consider him legit. All comics post 2005 are terrible.

  • @rigo_ad9317

    @rigo_ad9317

    Josh Moats wdym... your saying that the one created in 2016 is legit right. His name is Jonathan. But then you said that the super sons aren’t legit. BUT JONATHAN IS IN THE SUPER SONS. And Damien is legit. I haven’t read the most RECENT comic for Batman or Superman, but that’s like the last 2 or 3 issues. I don’t think that much has changed in 3 issues. But I did read the latest super sons, and Damien and Jonathan are canon. They are canon in the rebirth continuity. I don’t know what your talking about. He’s also in doomsday clock, and was in the most recent action comics and Superman issues. He went with his grandpa Gor-el in a quest in space and came back like 7 years older. But I’m pretty sure all of that is canon. I’m up to date with Superman stories, and I’m pretty sure one of the most recent is him revealing his identity to the world. If that’s the case, then Jonathan Kent is canon as Superman’s son.

  • @joshmoats7981

    @joshmoats7981

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@rigo_ad9317 Neither are legit..re-read the comment and the Super Sons were a part of a simulation. Jonathan Kent was created in 2015 so no he is NOT canon. Even Damian Wayne is a nonsense character created less than 15 years ago Both Batman and Superman were created in late 1930s. Damien Wayne is a creation of a lazy comic writer who couldn't actually create an original character(for all intents and purposes he was a straight ripoff of Robin) just with a different name and suit. There is a reason no writer ever gave Batman or Superman sons during their first 70 years. As I said previously any and all characters and changes post 2005 in comics is trash which nobody enjoys. It also coincides with a HUGEEEEEEE drop in comic sales.

    Kryptonite immunity could make sense if thought of in terms of genetics. "Just like both parents must pass on a sickle cell anemia gene in order for the disease to be fully present, both parents must be Kryptonian in order to produce a kryptonite-sensitive offspring. Or, perhaps sensitivity becomes a trait after puberty. Still, check that kid for radiation injuries." I guess the asthma could be written to make sense as well: an improbable mutation or a weird/unexpected result of combining human (Lois) with a Kryptonian who was shot through space and shot with all kinds of who-knows-what's during battles. But exploring those ideas would have taken away screen time from the nameless characters forgotten right after they aren't on camera. WHY LEARN MORE ABOUT THE HALF-ALIEN KID OF THE MAIN CHARACTER?
