Eh, people were mad about this story, but you know what? As a temporary thing, "Supervillain tries to be better superhero than the original" seems like a pretty damn compelling idea to me.

Yeah I don't see whats the problem, like what do you expect. Do you really think a supervillian who is trying to be a better hero than the hero himself will do things the "hero" way? It would be really dumb for Oc to take over Peters body and then it be like it never happened.

If you want to see a story of where a "Supervillain tries to be better superhero than the original", then I recommend you check out Kraven's Last Hunt if you already haven't. It's a pretty dark and, at some parts, disturbing story.

A decent review, but you did leave out 7 important plot points: 1. Superior Spider-man beat up the Black Cat and sent her to jail. It was so humiliating for her that getting revenge on Spider-man has been her primary motivation ever since Peter got his body back, and even though Pete told her about Otto taking over his body, she still doesn't believe it. 2. The little girl who the Green Goblin kidnapped had a personal connection to Otto. In one of his first adventures, right after beating up a bunch of bad guys, the Superior Spider-man saw that this girl was on the verge of dying and needed emergency brain surgery, and he personally performed it on her, saving her life. This action convinced Ghost Peter that maybe Doc Ock could become an actual hero and decided to ease up on trying to wrest control of his body. 3. You left out the part where Superior Spider-man apparently sacrifices himself to stop Horizon Labs from blowing up. You did mention it in the Spider-verse video, but Otto was really shaken after the whole adventure and no one knew why for almost a year. 4. Rodrick Kingsley, the original Hobgoblin, didn't die. Rodrick has a pretty nasty habit of sending stand-ins to do jobs he decided were too dangerous for him to do, dating back to Lefty Donovan in the early 1980s who recreated the Goblin Formula for him. When Phil Urich became the new Hobgoblin he had to fight who he thought was the original, killing him and cutting off his head. This turned out to be Rodrick's twin brother, Daniel. So when the Green Goblin fought and killed the "original" Hobgoblin, Phil, as Goblin Knight, remembering Rodrick's tricks, unmasked the dead Hobgoblin and revealing that the Green Goblin killed Rodrick's butler. Rodrick had decided Norman Osborn and his army was too strong so he retreated, sending the butler to make one last attempt at killing Osborn and getting the equipment he wanted. 5. Superior Spider-man, at one point, meets Kaine, the Scarlet Spider. I'm not sure if this happens in the normal books or in the Scarlet Spider books, but Otto FREAKS OUT when he sees Kaine in the Scarlet Spider costume, remembering that it was he who killed him the first time. He pummels Kaine, but eventually the two are forced to team up, and Otto eventually forgives Kaine, seeing that he's no longer the monster that broke his neck. 6. In order to get himself in a position to be able to communicate with Otto, the last memory fragment of Peter tapped into Otto's memories, going through every traumatic event that Otto had. He began to understand the rage that Otto felt, and eventually Peter's memories of Otto converged to Otto beginning to tap into Peter's memories as the body of Doctor Octopus died. This somehow allowed Peter's memory fragment to become a spirit and communicate with Otto during the midpoint of Goblin Nation. 7. There was a side story which explained Norman and Otto's hatred for each other. During the period right after Harry Osborn "died," Norman Osborn decided to hire Otto to help create robots and gear for him to use. Otto assumed he was being funded for science's sake so he agreed. However, when he found out that this new tech was going to be used to fight Spider-man, Otto wasn't pleased and tried to quit. Norman revealed that he had kidnapped Otto's former fiance, Alyssa, and injected her with AIDS, causing Otto to race to find a cure (The story of Doc Ock trying to find the cure for AIDS is in Spider-man Unlimited #3). He's unsuccessful, Alyssa dies from AIDS, and Otto had considered it his biggest failure, so when the Green Goblin kidnaps Anna Maria, the action makes Otto even more desperate to save her because Norman killed one of his loves in the past.

here's the thing, yes Otto was a horrible Spiderman but I'd argue that's the point, yes it was a betrayal of everything spiderman stands for but that's the point, the arc was a giant what-if scenario. All of Otto's actions were either cold hearted, hypocritical or both, but in the end the arc showed that Otto isn't mentally prepared to do hero work, especially in do or die situations. But the arc also showed that Otto does have the ability to go good if you give him something to fight for other then his own selfish egotistical rhetoric. Anyone who says Otto was a better Spiderman is probably gravitating to the fact that Otto did a better job at balancing Peter's life with that of Spiderman.

  • @vampman87

(Spoilers) Doc Ock has officially been revived in his classic pudgy body. (No more withered old man crap). This new Otto has almost all the memories of his time as the Superior Spider-man but not the Goblin Army attack on the city nor his decision to willingly erase his personality from Peter's body, so he's assuming that Peter's personality was stronger and he stole the life he made while in Peter's body. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with him because the revived Otto seems a little kinder than the old version, but not knowing about the last few days of his stint as the Superior Spider-man is gonna REALLY make him hate Spidey.

When we see spidey our spidey cut loose and be vengeful and not hold back it’s cool but it’s only for a moment cause our spidey is a character of hope he inspires us to be the best version of ourselves to beat back the darkness to never give in to fight as hard as we can when we have no other choice but to always choose hope first, choose kindness first, that’s why he’s always helping. He’s like a mixture of Superman and the flash. Superman inspires and comforts his presence is like a calming sensation but he has a limit the flash is a genuine person taking into account the physical and mental health of the people he saves and fights he always without fail is giving people a second and Spider-Man embodies both those traits. So if he ran around all the time in the superior suit which is what I think doc was taking about I think it would do an injustice to the suit what it stood for especially in the arc and to Peter as a character

I honestly liked Superior spiderman. he was awesome I thought, I liked how he took care of villains, and his ending was tragic. it kinda reminded me of Blue Flash, who I also enjoyed. I wouldn't have minded if superior spiderman had been able to stick around. I liked the idea of Doc Ock being inspired by the selfless actions of Peter and trying to live up to Spider-man. his ego kinda perverts his intentions by trying to be a superior spiderman.

Probably one of my favorite alternate Spider-Men. Starting with Otto selfishly taking Peter's body to possessing some of Peter's memories, and having heroic traits without Peter's responsibility. Seeing someone go through the redemption of being a villain to an anti-hero, and finally becoming the hero sacrificing himself once he realized who truly was the superior Spider-Man. But thennnn Otto goes back to being a villain... Also: The 999 to 1k comment satisfaction.

I love Superior Spider-Man. He’s so cool. It’s a shame Otto decided to give up the body and give it back to Peter; when you think about it, the only reason Otto messed up was not patrolling and leaving it exclusively to the Spider-bots. If he’d patrolled occasionally, he probably would’ve found out about the Green Goblin’s plan and stopped him earlier.

In a way, Otto ended up being a more responsible superhero than Peter ever was.
